Chapter 74: Rebuilding the Beacon

The scent of fresh timber and paint filled the air as the townspeople worked tirelessly to rebuild the tea shop. Its framework stood tall amidst the rubble of Ayoluwa, a testament to the community's resilience and determination. Levi stood near a stack of planks, his sharp gaze taking in every detail of the progress. Nearby, Hange animatedly discussed blueprints with Onyankopon and Pieck, her broad gestures mirroring the enthusiasm she brought to every project.

Gabi and Falco hauled crates of supplies to the construction site, their youthful energy lifting the spirits of everyone around them. "Watch your step!" Gabi called out as Falco nearly tripped over a loose board.

"I'm fine!" Falco shot back, though a grin tugged at his lips.

Levi's expression softened slightly as he observed the scene. The tea shop wasn't just a building-it was a sanctuary, a symbol of hope, and a reminder of the life he and Hange were fighting to protect and rebuild.

The rhythm of hammering and chatter was interrupted by the sound of a familiar voice, laced with good-natured sarcasm. "What's this? The famous tea shop rising from the ashes? Must be nice having all the help from Paradis."

Oliver strolled into view, balancing a tray of steaming mugs in one hand and a basket of scones in the other. As the owner of Oliver's Golden Brew Café, Quiet Tea's rival tea house, he had built a reputation not only for his exceptional teas but also for his cheeky banter with Levi and Hange.

Hange turned from her conversation with Pieck, her face lighting up. "Oliver! And here I thought you'd be sulking about all the competition."

Oliver smirked, setting the tray and basket on a makeshift table. "Competition? Hardly. I just thought I'd offer some real tea for a change. You know, remind everyone what quality tastes like."

Levi crossed his arms, his gaze cool. "I didn't realize you made house calls."

"Only for special occasions," Oliver replied smoothly, handing Hange a mug. "And to make sure your operation here doesn't embarrass the fine art of tea-making."

Hange laughed, taking a sip of the tea. "Still as humble as ever, I see."

"I leave humility to amateurs," Oliver shot back, though his eyes softened as he surveyed the bustling construction site. "You're doing good work here, though. Even I have to admit that."

Levi's lips quirked into the faintest smirk. "Don't strain yourself, Oliver."

The banter drew quiet laughter from the workers, a brief moment of levity amid the intense efforts. Despite his sharp tongue, Oliver had been a steadfast ally during the war, using his café as a secondary supply hub and shelter for those in need.

As the sun dipped lower in the sky, Oliver lingered to help distribute tea and scones, his presence adding to the camaraderie. Before leaving, he clapped Levi on the shoulder. "Don't mess this up, Ackerman. I've got a reputation to uphold, and I can't have my rival's shop looking shabby."

Levi grunted. "If you're so worried, maybe you should lend a hand."

Oliver grinned. "Nice try. I'll stick to providing tea-better than whatever swill you serve here."

Hange shook her head, chuckling as Oliver made his exit. "You two are hopeless."

Levi didn't respond, though the faint smirk on his face lingered.

The reconstruction wasn't limited to Ayoluwa's efforts. Supplies and skilled labor flowed in from Paradis, thanks to the ambassadors' advocacy. Armin, in particular, had pushed hard for the project, recognizing its symbolic importance.

"This tea shop represents more than just a safe haven," Armin had explained during a meeting with Paradis officials. "It's a beacon-a place that bridges the gap between Eldians and the rest of the world."

His words found resonance not only in Paradis but beyond. News of Ayoluwa's resilience during the extremists' attacks had spread far and wide. Pro-Eldian organizations in Marley also rallied behind the rebuilding efforts, sending letters of support, financial aid, and even volunteers.

One letter, read aloud by Onyankopon, came from a Marleyan organization: "Your courage inspires us. Ayoluwa stands as a symbol of what we hope the world can become-united in the face of hatred." The words drew cheers from the workers and townspeople, their determination renewed.

The people of Ayoluwa, deeply moved by Levi and Hange's leadership, found ways to honor them. A small plaque was placed near the tea shop's entrance, bearing the inscription: "In gratitude to those who protect our peace and future."

When Levi saw it, he frowned. "Tch. Waste of good metal."

Hange, standing beside him, chuckled. "Let them have this, Levi. It's their way of saying thank you."

Children in Ayoluwa, inspired by the couple's bravery, often reenacted the battles, pretending to be Levi fighting off enemies or Hange leading daring missions. Their names were spoken with respect and admiration, cementing their legacy in the town.

The day of the reopening was marked by cautious celebration. The tea shop had been lovingly restored-its scarred walls replaced with sturdy timber, its windows gleaming in the sunlight. The townspeople gathered in front, their faces alight with hope and anticipation.

Inside, the aroma of freshly brewed tea and baked goods filled the air, a stark contrast to the smoke and ash that had once clouded the space. Gabi and Falco worked tirelessly to set up tables, their laughter mingling with the cheerful chatter of the crowd.

Levi stood behind the counter, his sharp eyes scanning the room. Hange joined him, her smile soft. "We did it," she said, her voice carrying a mix of pride and relief.

Levi's gaze flicked to her, his expression steady. "For now."

Her smile widened. "For now," she agreed.

That evening, Levi and Hange sat together on the steps of the tea shop, the cool night air brushing against their skin. The distant hum of laughter and music drifted through the streets, but their thoughts were far away.

"They've come a long way," Hange said softly, her gaze fixed on the glowing lights of the town.

"They're tougher than they look," Levi replied, his voice carrying a note of approval.

Hange rested her head on his shoulder, a rare moment of stillness passing between them. "So are we."

Levi didn't respond, but his arm shifted slightly, brushing against hers in a quiet gesture of reassurance. Though the road ahead was fraught with challenges, tonight they allowed themselves this brief reprieve.

As the stars sparkled above Ayoluwa, the tea shop stood tall-a beacon of resilience, a testament to what could be achieved through unity and determination. And though the shadows of future battles loomed, Levi and Hange faced them together, their bond unyielding.
