SEASON NINE, EPISODE SIX
"Cristina?"
Ryan furrowed his eyebrows when he saw his sister's best friend coming out of Meredith's car, "Hi." Cristina said, as Ryan pulled the cardio loving female into his arms, "What—what are you doing here? I thought you—"
Meredith rounded her car, looking at her brother as Cristina walked straight past him, making Ryan furrowed his eyebrows looking at his sister, "What—" Meredith looked at him, "She lost someone in Minnesota."
"Oh."
He frowned, looking at his daughter who played with his necklace, as he held her diaper bag in hand as his duffel bag was on his shoulder, "Do we know how long she's staying for?"
Meredith shakes her head, "I don't think she's going back, she lost someone, she needs her friends." She said as Ryan nods his head at that, "Alright."
He looked down at the watch on his wrist, seeing a message from his realtor about the house he was wanting to buy, which was close to the apartment complex building his apartment was, "Do you want me to take her?" Meredith asked.
Ryan looked up at his sister, "Mm." He said, "No, it's okay, I've got her." He said, smiling at his daughter who placed a sloppy kiss against his cheek, "Thanks Ri for that,"
The one and a half year old smiled at her dad's words with Ryan smiling back at his daughter, looking into her big doe eyes, seeing so much of Caitlin in her, "Let's go to the daycare, yeah?" Rilynn babbled as Ryan hummed, "Exactly."
____
"What's that smell?"
Ryan questioned, when he was signing off on a chart that he helped on, "God—" He turned his head seeing Jo Wilson standing there, "Is it you? Are you the one stinking this area up?"
"It's vomit. Santa Claus came to town—" Jo said as Ryan scrunched his nose at the smell, "I don't need a play by play. Go clean yourself up." He said, looking at the female, "The kids will throw up over that smell, go." He said, as Jo looked at him, "That's what I'm doing." She scoffed.
"Go. It's disgusting." He ordered.
Jo rolled her eyes, walking away from the resident as Imogen approached where her resident stands, "You know, that was kind harsh." Imogen explained as Ryan looked away from the chart.
Ryan turned his head to face the strawberry blonde, "Hello, Imogen. How are you?" He smiled at the resident who knew better then to give into his charm, "You were kind harsh on her,"
"She smelt like vomit."
Imogen nods her head, "What did you suspect? She's covering the pit, and like she said, Santa Claus came to town," She explained as Ryan shook his head, "Dr Evans, the kids around here are already sick as it is, adding that smell to the mixture will not do me or them any wonders," He said.
Imogen was about to speak when Meredith came to where her brother was, "Ryan, what is this I heard from our realtor that you're looking for a house? We already have a house." Meredith said as Imogen walked away from the two siblings.
"I am not staying in our childhood home that Karev has taken over," He said to his sister, "I'm giving Caitlin the apartment, I just need to move into a house, you know, I need to start living my life like an actual adult," Ryan said as Meredith furrowed her eyebrows, "That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. You already are an adult since you pay for taxes and your apartment,"
Ryan looked at his sister, "I payed off the apartment so that Caitlin wouldn't have to worry about it, I just wanted to be independent," He admitted as Meredith looked at him, "Is it at least a nice house?"
"It is. It has so many bedrooms, so that you can stay around whenever, a back yard that Rilynn can actually play in," He said, cause his apartment didn't have an back yard, "I need to move out of that apartment," He repeated, "It has to many memories in there," He said as Meredith then nods her head understanding why Ryan actually wanted to move out.
Meredith nods her head, "Ok."
Ryan half smiled, running a hand through his hair, "Ok." He repeated back, handing the chart to the nurse before walking away, when he hears, "I hate Ryan Grey."
He chuckled, crossing his arms over his chest leaning against the intern locker room door, "I was starting to think that he was an okay guy but he's just mean." He hears Jo say to her friends.
"Did he say anything about me?" Leah Murphy asked Jo Wilson, "Who? Santa?" Jo asked confused, "No, Ryan."
The Wilson female looked at her friend confused, "No, why would he?" Ryan leaned his head against the door, listening in to Leah tell Jo about her sleeping with Ryan a few weeks ago.
He could've swore he saw steam come from Jo's ears at her friends words. He moved away from the door, walking away with a small smile on his lips.
____
Callum ran a hand through his hair when April had taken the duvet off of their bodies to cover her upper body after having sex, "Wow."
"That was—" He started to say, looking at the redhead who was leaning on her elbow, "So, so stupid." April let's out making Callum furrowed his eyebrows at her.
He ran a hand through his hair, before sitting up in the on-call room bed and standing up putting his scrubs back on, "How many times can I say this is not happening, and then, the next thing I know, it's happened? I am—I'm so weak." April said.
"You're not weak. You're just—" Callum said, when he turned to look at April dressed in his navy scrubs, "Disgusting. I was a good person once. A person with willpower, I have fasted before, this is worse." April explained.
Callum rolled his eyes, "This just feels helpless and inevitable." April said as Callum looked down at his pager, seeing Ryan page him for something, "I—" He left the room when April kept going on about race cars.
____
"What the hell is wrong with you?"
Ryan looked at the intern that had pulled him into an empty on-call room, "What?" He asked, genuinely confused, "You slept with Leah?!" Jo said, hitting his arm, "Hey, watch it." He said, stopping Jo from hitting him again, keeping some distance between them.
"You slept with my friend? Why? Why would you do that?"
Ryan looked at the intern who blocked the on-call room door, "I didn't even know you worked here until two days ago, I slept with her when I came back to work," He admitted about him sleeping with the blonde intern.
"You're disgusting." Jo said, with a scoff.
He smiled, looking at the intern, "Oh, don't lie Wilson, we know that I'm not disgusting, I am actually quite good." He said with a smug look on his face, moving close to where Jo stands against the door, "No, you're just disgusting."
"You didn't think that a few weeks ago." He admitted as Jo rolled her eyes, "My opinion has changed," Jo said making Ryan chuckle, as he looked down at the intern since he did have a few inches on her.
His hand slowly moved to her waist, bringing her into his chest, "I can change that." He smugly said with his charming smile, his blue eyes meeting Jo's eyes, looking in between them then down to her lips, "Just like how I can change that you hate me."
"Wait." Jo stopped him, her hand on his chest, "You heard that?" Ryan nods his head, with a small smile, "I hear most things that are said about me," Jo looked up at him, trying to think of something to say to make it better, "It don't matter though, cause I know you don't,"
"And how do you know that?"
Ryan smirked, leaning in to where he leaned down to be close enough to Jo's ear, "Cause you still haven't pushed me away," He said in her ear, before placing a kiss to her cheek as his pager beeped, seeing that it was Callum paging him.
He moved Jo slightly out of the way, leaving the intern in the on-call room all alone, wondering what the hell had just happened.
____
"Ahh! Ah!"
A boy groaned out from where he was placed on a hospital bed in the ER, "Brian Danziger, 17, he passed out in first period English." Stephanie Edwards stated as Athena nods her head to what Stephanie was saying, "Severe abdominal pain, tremors, and he's hypertensive." Athena added, when handing the chart to her resident.
"Have you called his parents?"
Athena nods her head, "His parents are on the way." She claimed, stepping away letting Meredith and Ryan look at the teenager, "Brain, were you drinking this morning? Did you take anything?"
"No." The seventeen year old groaned, "I don't take drugs." He said, "God! What happened?" He asked, sitting up clutching his stomach.
Meredith looked at Ryan, "He's distended, and he's got tenderness in the right upper quadrant." Meredith stated as Ryan looked at their patient, "Does he look jaundiced to you?"
"A little."
Meredith put her hand onto the teen's head, "Brain, I'm gonna need you to lie back down, please." She said, helping Brain lay back down when Meredith moves her hand having a piece of Brain's blonde hair in her hand.
"Ryan."
He glanced away from the teen, looking at his sister's hand seeing the piece of hair in his sister's hand, "Alright, make sure you get LFTs, COAGs, a tox screen, and an abdominal CT." His resident and Imogen's intern nod their heads, after Ryan handed the chart into Athena's hands.
"Edwards, what do you think this is?"
Stephanie looked at Medusa, "I think—I'm sorry, I don't know." The intern sighed, "That's all right. We don't either." He admitted to the intern, "For all we know, this kid could have dry rot." He moved away from his sister.
____
"Did you get a good look at his liver?" Ryan asked, when he approached where his sister was sat behind a nurse's desk with Cristina sat down beside her, "Oh, the prodigal Yang returns." Callum Ritchie spoke, with his charming smile.
He looked at the Yang female, "We've missed you." He added, "Yes, hi. Blah, blah, pleasantries." Cristina said making Ryan chuckle.
Cristina turned, "What do you know about the Cardio Chief, Jeff Randall?" She asked as Callum stopped her, "Russel. And nothing." He commented, looking at the computer.
"No named Jeff has ever done anything substantial." Cristina said.
Jackson came to them, "Hey, Karev, when you buy Mer's house, can I get my old room back?" He asked as Callum looked at his best friend, "Dude, we literally own an apartment."
"Nope." Alex shakes his head, "No roommates, we're not in college. We're real people now." Alex commented as Ryan looks at the Karev male, "Hmm."
"Wait, you're selling him your childhood home?" Cristina asked her best friend, "I might not, he wants me to rip out the floors." Meredith stated as Cristina then looked at Ryan, "Doesn't Ryan want the house?"
The Grey male shakes his head, "Nope, too many bad memories in that house." He said, about his childhood, "Callum!" Callum turned his head when he turned April's voice, ducking down in the chair and moving away.
"Where is he going?" April asked, confused."
Ryan looked at the redhead, "Away from you, it seems." He chuckled as Cristina agreed with that, "Cristina, glad you're back." April said with a small smile, "You still doing it with Ritchie?" Cristina asked about the whole thing that happened at the boards with April and Callum.
April makes a face, "Does everybody know about this now?" She asked as Ryan nods his head, "God and everybody." Him and Cristina both said in sync, making him smile at his sister's best friend.
"Four whole seconds, I was glad you were back." April said to Cristina who spun side to side in the chair.
Meredith looked at the scans, "You were right." She said as Ryan stands up, coming to where his sister was, "About the liver." Meredith said as Ryan saw the scans, "Oh, crap."
____
"At this point, it's about assessing these emotional damages. So we'll need to hear everything," Their lawyer said at the statement meeting.
The door opened and Cristina walked in, "You must be Dr. Yang. Glad you could be here. Have... have a seat," Another one of their lawyers said.
Cristina sat down beside Ryan, "Dr. Hunt, I guess you won't be necessary as proxy any more," The woman lawyer said.
Ryan glanced back at their chief, "Uh, uh, I'm here more out of support for my staff," Owen said.
"Yeah, I don't mind if he stays," Derek said.
The man lawyer looked at them, "Today, uh, we... we'd like to get some statements about, uh, continued physical, but... but also mental or emotional difficulties you might have suffered since the crash," the man said.
"What if we don't have any?" Cristina asked.
Ryan looked down to his hands, "Well, um, why don't we talk? We'll see what comes up." The man said, looking at Cristina, "Almost anything can be helpful to monetize your injuries," the woman said.
"How do we do that?" Meredith asked.
The women looked at them, "We use a formula," Ryan furrowed his eyebrows, "It's, uh... Your medical bills plus pain and suffering equal to three times your medical bills plus flat-rate hard-tissue injuries, plus loss of income, plus lost earning capacity, plus any other foreseeable harms, for each of you. So, we're talking about a sizeable award," the woman said.
"Far more substantial than the settlement they offered you," the man said.
Ryan looked at where Derek sat, "Where's all the money come from?" Derek asked.
"Well, we're looking at the possibilities now. Uh, the charter company, uh, aircraft manufacturer, parts manufacturers, the pilot, of course. The ground crew at Sea-Tac, um..." the woman trailed off.
Ryan looked at the man, "Jerry? Did you say Jerry?" He asked, leaning forward slightly in his chair.
"Who's Jerry?" the man said.
"The pilot," Ryan and Derek said.
"He was up there with us," Meredith said, "He broke his back. He's paralyzed now," Cristina said.
"You're gonna go after him?" Meredith asked.
Callie, who sat down beside Derek, looked at her friends, "Well, if we find he was negligent, shouldn't we?" Callie asked.
Ryan furrowed his eyebrows at Callie's words, "You know, I'm sorry. I can't help. Um, I've got no residual injuries, and I've gotta go run someone's service for them, so, you know, good luck," Cristina said, leaving the room quickly.
Ryan went to open his mouth to stop Cristina. Hearing the door close before he could, "Folks, listen, you have a special bond. You've been through something horrible and survived it together," Ryan ran a hand through his hair, "But as far as the pilot is concerned, you need to stop thinking of him as one of you and start thinking of him as one of them," the woman said.
____
Ryan looked at Brian's parents, "So, we're not sure if it's cancerous, but there is a mass on his liver, and it is haemorrhaging." He explained to Brain's parents.
Meredith looked at them, "So, we'd like to do an biopsy as soon as possible." Brain's parents shared a look, "All right, of course." Brain's dad stated.
"There's something else. Brain's symptoms—the jaundice, the hair loss, the high blood pressure, coupled with a hepatic lesion, it's all consistent with the use of anabolic steroids." Ryan claimed.
"What?" Ken, Brain's father said.
Brain sat up, "What the hell?" He said, as his parents both turned to face him, "Brain, are you taking steroids?" His father asked, as Brain shakes his head, "No."
"Have you noticed changes in behaviour?" Meredith added, "Moodiness, depression—" Meredith was cut off, "Shut up. Just shut up! I said I don't take them." Brain shouted.
"Brain." His mother said, stopping him.
"Unprovoked aggression." Meredith added, again, "Don't listen to her." Brain told his parents, "He's not even an athlete. He's in the Model UN." His father, Ken stated.
His mother looked at him, "Brain, baby." His mother started, "Just tell me. If you did it, honey, just tell me." She said, looking at her son.
Ryan watched the interaction, "I wanted—" Brain started, as he laid back against his pillow, "Girls only like the guys with these crazy bodies now." Brain stated, as Ryan frowned at that, "I wanted a shot at someone liking—me." He stuttered.
"Brain, how long have you been taking them?"
Brain shakes his head, "I swear, I barely taken any." He said as his mother then added, "For two years. Since sophomore year." His mother claimed, looking back at her son with tears in her eyes, "That's when you stopped being my boy."
Ryan looked at his sister, "I'm sorry." Brain sobbed, "I'm so sorry." He sobbed, as Ryan kept his face emotionless, "I didn't know, I didn't know." He repeated.
____
"You all right?"
He poked his head into the attending's lounge seeing Callie sat in there, with her head in her hands, "You ever wish we would've just taken the settlement? Then we wouldn't have to relive this over and over again." Callie said.
"Well, none of us wanted to settle." He admitted.
Callie looked at the resident, "I did. We all did, in fact, we voted." Ryan furrowed his eyebrows at her words, "Then why did you agree not to?" He asked the orthopaedic surgeon.
"You know why." Callie stated, looking at him right in the eyes.
He sighed, "That's—Thats not fair." He claimed, "It's true, though." Callie said, "It came down to you, and you agreed." He said back, "Because you and Derek pushed us. You both came in late with your big speech and—"
"What are you—"
Callie stopped him, "You did, Ryan. You decided and you pushed." She said, "I did not push you. You could've agreed to the settlement." He said to the women, "No one's gonna go against you or Derek. How was I supposed to stand up?"
"I did not push you." He repeated, shaking his head, "And you did the same thing with your leg." He furrowed his eyebrows, genuinely confused, "What are you talking about?"
"I told you. I did not want to do that surgery."
Ryan looked at her, "You suggested the surgery!" He yelled, "Yeah, for someone else, for Schachter." Callie said to him, "I wasn't suggesting it for me, and I told you that, but you wouldn't let up and you made me do it." Callie said, looking at Ryan.
"Because I believed you could do it!" He shouted at her, "I believed that you could do it, and you did, I am walking." He said to Callie, "But you still get pain in your leg." Callie said back to him, as Ryan sighed, "Don't feel bad, Callie, it's on me." He spoke, walking out of the room, closing the door behind him.
____
Alex Karev walked down the hallway seeing Jo Wilson covered in vomit once again, "What's the matter with you? Get changed!" Jo stopped him, "Yes! That's it! I have been walking around in the same vomit soaked shirt since this morning." Jo said.
Ryan rounded the corner hearing someone yelling, "It couldn't be that I've been repeatedly puked on by a patient who pukes all day, despite the face that I can't find anything wrong with him except extreme nausea and migraines." Jo said to Alex Karev, who stands in front of her with his hands on his hips, "No, I must lack the ability to wash myself or have absolutely no self respect."
Ryan looked at the intern, surprised that she'd have the nerve to yell at an fellow, "Wilson," He said, gaining her attention, and Alex's who looked back at the resident, "Come with me now."
He takes the intern, "You said extreme nausea and migraines, right?" Jo nods her head, confused on where Ryan was taking her, he went into his locker handing her a clean scrub top, "Here, first change into this,"
He handed her the top, before turning around even though he had already seen her naked multiple times but did it out of respect for her, turning back when he heard her clear her throat, "Ok, tell me again, what were his symptoms."
"It's cyclic vomiting syndrome."
Ryan said, when approaching Jo's patient, sitting down in the bed beside his own, "It's been linked to mitochondrial disease." He stated, "We see it a lot in kids." Ryan claimed, "Good labs, extreme nausea, vomiting for days. It's a bitch to diagnose so the parents go crazy," He said, looking at where Jo stands on her patient's other side.
"I thought it was the booze I was taking for the headaches." The man claimed, "No, it's the migraines, that's what triggers the vomiting episodes." He stated to the man.
"But there no cure?"
Ryan looked at the man, "Not yet, but now that we know what it is, we can treat the migraines," He stated, "And I don't have to live like this anymore?" The patient asked as Ryan nods his head, "Exactly."
"No, you don't." Jo smiled at her patient.
Ryan moved his hand out, showing the box to the man, "Oh, this works on migraines." He stated, "and should lessen your CVS symptoms. We're gonna set you up with a primary care doctor, but if this happens again, you come back, you, uh, look for us, either Dr Wilson or myself. We'll take good care of you." He said to the man.
Jo, who was sat down behind Ryan, leaned in, "Thank you." She said as Ryan didn't turn back to her, instead smiled at the man, "Yeah. Sure saved my biscuits from the fire on this one, Doc." Ryan chuckled.
"I'm actually not a doctor yet, I'm a resident." He stated, as the man looked at him, "You're not a doctor?"
Ryan looked at the man, "I am, but not fully," He admitted as the man smiled at Ryan, "I just know that you'll be an amazing doctor," He said making Ryan's confidence boost, "Thank you, Doc again,"
Ryan half smiled, "Don't thank me, thank her, if that was someone else, they would've let your biscuit burn," He admitted, walking away from the man, leaving him with Jo.
____
Ryan sat in the chair in the conference room, talking to the hospital lawyers when Callie walked into the room, "Uh, could you take out your tape recorder? I need to retract my earlier statement." Callie said, sitting down near the lawyers, "Uh, testimony or whatever,"
The women looked at her, "Well, I'm not sure anything you said was—" Callie cut her off, "I lied before, I do believe that Dr Ryan Grey can fully walk again without getting pain in his leg."
"Well, that's speculation, not fact." The women said.
Callie looked at them, "It's a face that nerve regeneration is very slow. His nerve may need more time, and there are also new nerve connectors that we could try for closer approximation of the server ends." Callie stated, "That's a fact. We-we could still try an end-to-end transfer. We haven't even tried to take a branch of the MABC."
"You've given this some thought."
Callie nods her head, "I have. Every single night since you fell." Callie said, making eye contact with Ryan, who furrowed his eyebrows, "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because I was scared." She said, her voice breaking, "Because I felt like I failed you, but you weren't wrong to believe in me, Ryan." Ryan looked at his friend, "And you weren't wrong to push. In fact, you should've pushed me harder. We haven't tried everything, you shouldn't give up until we do." Ryan nods his head with a small smile on his lips.
____
"What was that about?"
Ryan asked, when he came down the stairs, looking at where Callum had walked away from April with a small smile playing on his lips.
Rilynn babbled looking at her uncle, "Un—" Rilynn said, making grabby hands to Callum, who takes his favourite person in the world into his arms with a smile, "That was nothing." Callum stated.
They went towards the elevator as Ryan looked at his friend, "Did she finally stop mentioning you bumming out Jesus?" He asked as Callum opened his mouth to stop him, as Rilynn babbled making them both chuckle.
"When does Caitlin come back? I miss her." Callum said, trying to change the topic off of his and April's complicated relationship, "She's coming back tomorrow, I'm picking her up in the morning." He said as Callum nods his head.
He smiled, "Need someone to come with?" Ryan looked at his daughter who was in his best friend arms, "Rilynn's coming with me, but if you wanna come, you can." He said as Callum smiled, holding Rilynn's small hand in his.
____
The Seattle Five sat in the conference room, "Thank you all for your cooperation today. Next step is for us to file a complaint against the parties," the female lawyer said.
Ryan looked at Cristina, "Can we leave the pilot out of this? The man is a paraplegic now," Cristina said, as Ryan agreed to what she was saying, nodding his head, "Yeah, I agree," Both Ryan and Derek said.
"We should take him off the list," Meredith said, as Callie turned her head looking at them, "Wait. No. What if he was drunk or... or asleep and-" Callie started.
"No, we talked to him," Meredith frowned.
Their chief of surgery stands to the side, "Dr. Hunt, I'm gonna have to ask you to step out now. This is only appropriate for the victims of the crash," the woman said.
"Oh. Okay," Owen nodded, leaving the room.
Ryan watched as Owen walked out of the conference room, "Folks, we're not going after the pilot. We need to investigate him to make our case, but the damages we'll be seeking will be far greater than what that pilot could be accountable for. Or the charter company, for that matter. We'll be going after bigger fish. More and more, it's looking like the best strategy will be to look for fault with the hospital itself," the woman said.
"Boise?" Ryan asked, looking at their female lawyer.
The women looked back at Ryan, "No, this hospital. The people who put you on that plane," she said, as Ryan turned his head looking to where Owen Hunt stands outside of the conference room, talking to an intern.
