I climb over the edge of the box, I find solid ground beneath my feet for the first time I can remember. My head throbs with a dull ache, thoughts and worries tumbling over each other like a storm inside my mind. The boys still surround me, their gazes a mix of curiosity and appraisal. "Damn," someone shouts. "She's hot," I catch one boy muttering to another, their sniggers echoing off the stone walls. "I CALL DIBS!" another boy yells, his voice carrying a crude undertone. Anger flares in my chest, and I shoot him a glare, eyes hard with disgust. My face flushes with heat, a mix of anger and embarrassment painting my cheeks red."Alright Shanks back off and get back to work....NOW!"
A deep, stern voice demands as the boys scoff and laugh as they start walking away from me and spread out across the place, leaving only a few of the boys with me. I followed some of them with my eyes and when they have all gone away and stopped surrounding me I could properly see where I was.
What the fuck is this place.
I spin around slowly taking in my surroundings. Giant ivy-covered stone walls rise high above the landscape, towering over the place, enclosing us in. Inside the walls was a plane of grass and patches of forest stretching from each of the walls. My eyes were then drawn to some rustic looking wooden shacks, that seemed they would collapse at any time. I scanned the rest of the space. An animal pen, a tower, more huts and shacks, forest, a lake, and.... the walls.
"You alright there greenie?"
The stern voice spoke again. I quickly turned to face the boy that had spoken. He had dark skin, buzzed hair and wore a commanding look on his face. Greenie? what the fuck does that mean? I think to myself. I don't reply to his question, just nodded my head slowly. His face softened and he gave me a sympathetic smile.
"I'm Alby." He says and I nod to him. "This is Newt," he points to the blonde haired boy with the british accent, "And this is Minho". After I had said a quiet 'hello' to Newt I turned to the boy Alby had referred to as Minho.
He was the one who helped me out of the box. I looked him in his eyes again, looking him up and down seeing him more clearly In the light of the sun rather than the darkness of the box. He had an athletic build, muscley arms which were now crossed over his chest as he examined me. His intense eyes seemed to search for my soul behind my own eyes. I give him a half smile "Hello". He smiles warmly and greets me, making my smile grow wider.
"You remember your name yet greenie?"
I tear my eyes away from minho and look back to Alby. I think as hard as I can, concentrating hard as I try to grasp the forgotten memory. I know my name. Why can't I remember it? I shake my head to Alby. "no" I say solemnly. He nods. "You'll get it back in a day or two. It's the only thing they let us keep." I nod to him still a confused look on my face. Who are they?
"Newt will give you the tour. He's the second in command here."
I look at newt and smile at him softly. He gives me and inviting smile back noticing the confusion in my eyes and explains, "Alby is our leader, keeps things running smooth in the glade". The Glade? "That's what we call this place. The Glade." He explains, almost as if he was reading my mind. "oh okay" I say quietly.
Newt starts to turn and walk to one of the huts and motions you to come with him. You oblige and start walking after him until you feel a strong hand grip the top of your arm. You swing your head around to see Minho smiling at you. "Have fun on the tour greenie, see you at the bonfire tonight." I didn't know what he was talking about with the bonfire but I just smiled to him and said bye, continuing after newt.
{time skip after the tour}
After the tour around the glade, Newt brought me to the homestead to get some dinner. He had shown me everywhere in the glade, the animal pen, the deadheads, the huts and the maze walls. Not inside of course.
We are late to dinner since the tour had taken a while so everyone was already in the homestead eating dinner and talking loudly amongst themselves. As soon as I walk in the door, everybody turns to me and watches me as Newt guided me to a table at the back of the homestead where Alby sat already, eating his soup hungrily. All of the boys had gone quiet and were now just whispering to each other their eyes like lasers burning little holes into me. I walked, putting my head down as my face grew hot and red in embarrassment. Newt grabbed my shoulder with one hand and put his other hand gently on the small of my back, walking me quickly over to Alby.
He sat me down across from Alby and told me to wait there while he went to get some food from Frypan, who I had met earlier and was the cook for the glade. Alby looked up from his soup and put his spoon down, smiling at me. "How was the tour?" he asks politely. "It was good". I say dryly, forcing a small smile to him. He nods at me. "It will get better once you settle in you know." he said comfortingly. "Yeah. Thanks".
Alby goes back to eating his food and newt comes back to the table with two bowls of soup. He sits down next to me, placing one bowl in front of him then me. I realise how starving I am. I thank him and start eating my soup. I only eat maybe 5 mouthfuls of the soup before I start to feel nauseous. I push the bowl away from me, leaving the majority of it in the bowl.
"Frypans' soup no good?" Newt asks chuckling. I smile back. "No, it's good. I just feel a bit sick. Probably just used to not eating for a while." I explain and he gives me a concerned look. "You sure you don't want any more? Don't want you going hungry, Frypan won't be happy if your sneaking around in his kitchen later." He says laughing. I giggle a little and ensure Newt that i'll be fine.
"Right well i'll get you settled into a place to sleep before the bonfire". Newt announces after bringing his, Alby's and your plate to frypan. "Bonfire?" You question. "Yep. Every month when a new greenie comes up in the box, we have a bonfire to celebrate." he says. I nod and follow him out of the homestead.
