*Xavia's POV*

Blood.

All I saw was blood and so much of it.

I stood in the middle of my bedroom and watched as the crimson liquid drained from the young girl's throat. I felt terrible for having murdered her, but... she would have died regardless. The injuries she sustained were far too severe. At one point, Raziel even said that if I had somehow been able to get her treatment, the extent of the trauma she endured was irreversible.

I know he's right.

What truly made me feel awful was when she reached out for my hand, needing comfort in her final breaths of life.

After she passed, I set out to find Vurrok, hoping he would help me get rid of her body. Fortunately, I saw him lounging in the dining room, taking a few minutes to feed himself. Upon entering, he looked my way and said, "Princess, I'm surprised to see you out and about, especially when I'd think you'd be having fun with the human our king gave you."

"You're right. However, she said something that angered me, and I slit her throat," I simply replied, though he didn't seem to accept my answer.

"I see..." Vurrok said, and he paused while standing up. Then he walked toward the door and continued, "That won't do... His majesty won't be satisfied with anything resembling a mercy killing."

"I understand. Do what you think is best," I ordered, and he nodded.

However, before heading to my room, he added, "Stay here; I'll be back when I am done, and we can go over the story your father will accept and rave about."

Without saying another word to Vurrok, I grabbed a plate of food and sat in my usual spot. I ate while handing some to Raziel when it was safe from the random demonic servants doing their chores.

When our butler returned three hours later, we reviewed his fabricated story. He told me I should remain in the castle tomorrow and train for my assignment. I learned my father didn't want me to leave the grounds before my upcoming mission.

I'm happy to relax and spend time with my new friend.

~

Twenty-four hours had passed, and during that time, Raziel and I stayed in my room, carefully practicing our powers with each other. I had genuinely concluded that he was more than a shapeshifter. Either way, seeing how quickly he could shift into another form still amazed me. I could only show Razy a few hidden talents at a time to keep my magical energy private. We bonded, which, in turn, allowed us to fully trust each other.

~

On the day of my mission, I awoke to a knock on my bedroom door, followed by, "Princess?"

I quickly readied myself and opened the door, allowing Vurrok to enter. As I stood before him, I said, "Yes?"

"Princess, I've been instructed to tell you to meet your father in the Throne room in an hour. He wanted to speak with you before you leave on your crucial assignment," Vurrok explained, and I nodded.

"Very well, thank you, Rok," I replied, not realizing that I had given him a nickname and actually said it aloud.

"Rok?" He questioned with a quizzical expression across his visage.

"I apologize; forgive me... I wasn't thinking," I quickly responded, but he actually shook his head, somewhat amused.

"It's okay, I like it. It'll be our little secret... Xavia..." Vurrok replied, finally saying my real name instead of calling me by that ridiculous title my entire life.

"Now that was interesting," Raziel stated as the demon butler exited my room, leaving me to get prepared.

I stood there, a bit shocked at his reaction, then asked Raziel, "Do you think we can actually trust Vurrok?"

My friend considered my question and gave his honest opinion, "At this time, it's unclear. Like you said, see how things go, and keep a watchful eye. Perhaps when our mission is done and we return home, I can turn into something and spy on him. Maybe a fly or whatever type of Hell creature that can go by unnoticed around here. It's the least I can do since you brought me back to life, Xavy."

I smiled at his words and the cute nickname he gave me, "We'll spy together."

I went ahead and took some time to gather the items I wanted to take with me on the mission. The first thing I did was change my clothing; Raz told me he wouldn't look, and I trusted him. He removed himself from my arm and transformed into a little green glass frog. I chuckled at his choice, and it became clear to me why he decided on that form. Raziel faced the opposite direction, entertaining himself by seeing how high he could hop.

Now, that's precious.

The attire I put on was special to me. It was light but very durable and could withstand an enormous amount of heat. I figured that would be best; the rest of what I'd wear was considered a battle outfit. For this mission, being able to sneak and blend in would serve me best. I grabbed my smaller knives, slotting them around the lining of my boot. Though I didn't need weapons to kill, I liked having options.

When I was ready, I stared at my friend for a while, watching him having fun without a care in the world. This time, however, my laugh could be heard while I teased, "Having fun, are we?"

"I was training, I'll have you know," Raziel commented with a small laugh, adding, "I didn't know if being in this form meant I could only jump as high as a frog could. Or, would I be able to jump higher because of my innate power; it made sense to me."

I nodded, then said, "And you also had fun."

"I really did," Raziel admitted, grinning comically with his frog mouth wide open; I followed suit.

I knelt beside him, extended my hand, and watched him change into his favorite dragon form. He climbed and circled around my arm, ensuring his head was in an area allowing him to observe from under my sleeve. Quickly, he transformed into a dragon tattoo, and I could already see his improvement since his first time doing this.

The training we did yesterday enhanced his abilities tremendously.

I double-checked my room and its contents, and once I was confident I was ready to leave, I went to the kitchen in search of food. I found some items I wanted to eat, and Raziel told me what he wanted, so I grabbed it for him.

I returned to my room for a few minutes, sat on the floor with my friend, and ate breakfast together. It was getting closer to when I was supposed to meet my father in the Throne room, so we finished everything, and I proceeded there. When I entered, I saw my father sitting on his gigantic throne; Vurrok was beside him. The moment I was noticed by the butler, he announced my presence to his boss, "Your Majesty, the Princess has arrived."

"Perfect timing! Vurrok was just telling me how you tore apart the human and ordered him to clean the mess." He stated, sounding oddly proud at my alleged cruelty, "He said you literally tore her apart from the inside out after making her please you. You're finally becoming more like me, and I couldn't be fucking happier," He finished explaining, and my anger began to rise.

I also felt like I was going to be sick.

Through our mind-link, Raziel said, "You are nothing like him; control your breathing. It's going to be okay."

I had hoped the King of Hell would change the subject, and I was thankful he did. Raziel's words helped me, and the next time my father spoke, it was about the mission, "You know the consequences should you fail me. You are to go to Earth, locate an angel, and kill her. Since we are devils, we can sense them as they are our rivals. This angel is prophesied to kill me and, in doing so, end our reign and power. It's up to you to save our home and my life; I am bound here and cannot physically rise to Earth myself. Otherwise, I would have already consumed her essence. I don't care what you do to her. Have your way with her and kill her like you did to the woman last night. Or, simply hunt her down. It's up to you. I expect an update in a few days. The portal will take you there. You are dismissed."

I bowed before my father and turned toward Vurrok, who stood near the blood-drawn pentagram. When I stepped into the center of the eerie-looking design, I took a deep breath and told Raziel to do the same. Given that it was his first time going through any portal, I wanted to help him. I felt the spell's power compelling my body to be one with teleportation energy. When I noticed I was becoming transparent, I knew it was working.

It only took a few seconds.

When I appeared on Earth, I looked at my feet and saw the other connected pentagram that made the portal spell work. I glanced around my surroundings, seeing that I was standing in the center of a cemetery at night. The abundance of sounds, smells, and chatter filled my senses; I was glad it wasn't as bad as the first time I went to Earth. Everything was too much to handle that day, and it felt like my head would explode.

"That was intense; taking a deep breath really helped," Raziel told me.

I leaned against a steel, vertical crypt while we gathered ourselves, getting used to the change in atmosphere and temperature. After another breath, I responded to my friend, "I'm glad it helped you. After the first few times I came to Earth, I realized that a deep breath right then actually helps the transportation process and lessens the possible aftereffects as well."

"If it was intense for me and it was my first time, I can't imagine how it was for you. I know you have more powerful senses than I do... so... could you tell me about them? If that's okay," Raziel asked, and I could tell how curious and genuine his question was.

"Razy, you can ask me anything, and I'll always be honest with you..." I began to say, and thought back to that first time, a century ago, "I guess it comes to no surprise that I have traits and powers that come from my father, but... I also appear to have other abilities that he doesn't have. There are two in particular, one of which is transforming my body into a pure shadow form. The other one is more difficult to explain, and I don't have a name for it..."

I paused for a second, trying to figure out how to explain it in the best way possible, "Basically, when my emotions, especially my anger, reach a level that I cannot control, I can cause serious damage. I'm sure, at times, you've felt something similar when I become upset. I was a newborn when I caused the most damage; it was after my father killed my mother in front of me. He had left on a mission the day after, and I was all alone, missing her terribly. I kept reliving everything about that wretched day. A mixture of unadulterated hatred and immense sorrow caused my untamed power and energy to collide, combusting into what humans call a thermonuclear bomb."

"That sounds very dangerous..." Raziel commented, then remained silent to hear more of what I had to tell him.

"It is... Vurrok found me after; I was alone, covered in debris, and crying. I stood in the center, the sole survivor, surrounded by several miles of complete devastation. He witnessed everything, and so he did some extensive research on what it might be. When I was old enough to understand, he told me more about it... Thermal radiation and extreme heat coalesced into a giant firestorm, and anyone nearby vaporized into nothing. Depending on the amount of energy I release, I can create varying lights and heat, which eventually explode. The concussive force of the blast itself takes the form of a shockwave that radiates from the point of the explosion at supersonic speeds... That was the first time I took a life, hundreds, actually. It was good that Vurrok is a master at magic; restoration and summoning spells are his favorite. He had to completely restore the castle and the surrounding area before my father returned from his mission." I finished explaining in full detail.

"I take it Vurrok kept quiet about what he witnessed?" Asked Raziel.

"Yeah, he did. Otherwise, I'm pretty confident I wouldn't be alive today... However, when my father came back, he asked Vurrok about the power he felt in the area. A few search parties were sent out for months on end. My father wanted that power for himself. I have always been glad that Vurrok helped me understand it better so it wouldn't happen again. Sometimes, I still lose control, but I have improved, even if only by a little bit."

My friend then responded, "We may not know what Vurrok's agenda is, and just being near him causes me uncertainty, but... his actions regarding you are very interesting, to say the least. Do you think he has maybe a sense of guardianship because of what happened to you when you were a newborn?"

I took his question to heart and even spent a few solid minutes considering everything that happened in my life. Vurrok has been there, sometimes in the background, but always seemed helpful, as if he has protected me from my father. Could he have decided this of his own volition? Was he threatened? Asked? Or has this been a deception all along, helping me to gain my trust until it served him best? I honestly couldn't be entirely sure about anything at this point, but... it was about time to find out.

"You've brought up an excellent point, and I think once we complete my father's mission, we should go and have a talk with him. Whaddya' say?" I asked sincerely.

"I'd love nothing more," Raziel confirmed without hesitation.

"Thanks for everything, Raz. I really appreciate you; it's nice to have a friend who I trust and who can keep me company," I said, speaking from the heart, wanting him to know he meant a lot to me.

"You couldn't have said that any better, Xavia. I resonate with your words more than I can explain. The more time I spend with you... the more I know I am meant to be by your side." He responded, and I literally felt his words and not only heard them in my mind.

Our bond was definitely growing stronger.

"I am right there with you. We don't have the answers as to why this happened, but it feels right." I replied honestly and got off the steel crypt I was leaning on, adding, "Let's start searching for the angel."

~

Before Raziel and I left the cemetery to search for the angel, I shifted into my shadow form to make things easier. While moving through the city's darkness, Raz told me how much he liked it up here on Earth. There was so much to see, and he felt it was freeing. I couldn't agree more—little did he know, we've only barely scratched the surface of this world.

When I turned the corner down some unknown alleyway, about an hour later, a woman's terrifying scream caught our attention.

I sensed immense distress...

Fear.

Sensing her feelings helped me pinpoint her location, and I soon knew where to find her. Raziel felt the same way, wanting to help as he said, "Let's go help her; we can continue searching for the angel afterward, okay?"

"You read my mind," I replied, zooming quickly to approach the woman who screamed.

The closer I got to the spot, the angrier I became. I sensed another human in close proximity; his aura was evil, and I was positive he was the reason the woman in question needed us to help her. The only thing beginning to concern me was that I could feel another nearby presence.

Whoever or whatever it is, in my soul, I know that being isn't a threat; it is something I can't put my finger on, though. I am very curious. I want to learn more... The pull I feel is more intense than anything I have felt before, but... this would have to wait...

I found the woman not too soon after I felt that odd sensation and my sole focus was on killing the man that was on top of her. My mind was reeling. I couldn't stop recalling the memories... the painful screams from the other night when my father was raping those poor women had filled my mind. Simply witnessing someone else possibly attempting that horrific act was making my emotions boil over, and... I needed to be careful. With a deep breath, I calmed myself and focused on the task at hand.

I didn't want to waste more time, so I moved toward the scene, slowly willing myself to return to my human form. As my body materialized, I realized that I liked feeling the breeze in my hair; it was serene. I walked, ready to handle the situation before me, thinking of the best method to rid the vile human. His pants were unbuttoned; her clothes were torn—my human skin began to ripple as my demonic form was threatening to surface.

Standing behind the man, I told him, "You should pick on someone your own size."

My entire being pulsated with anger at what I was clearly witnessing. The man seemed to only laugh at my words as he completely ignored the crying woman on the floor. I was glad for that; she needed to get out of here. He then stood up and faced me; his arousal was plain to see.

While licking his lips, he said, "So, you're saying I'd better pick on you then?" He looked me over like a piece of meat, adding, "Your pussy must be tight and ready for me. Now, be a good girl, and don't fight me. Otherwise, I'll kill you slowly after I've had my way with you."

"Like he even stands a chance," Raziel commented, and I heard the amusement in his voice, but his anger was still present.

"Is that a promise?" I challenged the man's words, my signature sinister smirk making its way onto my face.

Even though I was as focused as ever, I ignored the man and addressed the scared woman behind him, "Run, now. Go find help."

I ensured I spoke to the girl softer than how I talked to the man, and I saw that she was trying to cover herself while running away. She managed to thank me, and I gave her a nod in return. The man appeared to take this opportunity to walk closer to me as he continuously checked me out. However, his following words triggered me beyond all reason and...

He reminded me of my father.

As each word left his disgusting lips, my anger continued to rise, "I see the way you dress; you angsty girls are all the same. You just need some good dick, and mine is all ready; I have plenty to fill you up, don't worry."

An unamused laugh escaped my lips before I could stop it.

"Really? That's it? You're just talk? At this point, you're merely boring me to death." I replied, staring him down as if he was nothing, "I know your type. I've seen so many of you in my life... overpowering younger women, taking their innocence because you can, all because you are too fucked in the head to be a decent human being. It's people like you that make me wholeheartedly enjoy what I am."

"You'll regret ever crossing me," He threatened, running full speed in my direction.

I stood my ground, unbothered and waiting for him to attack first; it was only fair as a human could not harm me. He angrily wrapped both of his hands around my throat; my mind shot to the time my father did it to me. My heartbeat sounded as if it was echoing in my ears, and I glared at the human who thought he had the upper hand.

He was sorely mistaken.

I materialized my tail, extended it to the man's back, and wrapped it tightly around his neck, causing him to let me go. His hands shot up, gripping at my muscular appendage; nothing he was doing could release my hold on him. Now that I had him in my grasp, I could see all his past evil actions, and in doing so, I was beginning to lose control. Raziel even tried to warn me that my energy was rising beyond a safe level, and though I heard him, it didn't help...

I was too far gone...

Suddenly, I felt a warm presence fill my cold, angered heart. It was calming and full of love, and it distracted me enough to lessen the abundance of power ready to explode. I turned my head ever so slightly in the direction of where that feeling was coming from. I wondered if that was the same thing I had felt a little bit ago. As my thermal energy particles dissipated and the rocks that lifted from the ground fell back to the floor, I focused on the man again, more level-headed.

Then, I lifted him from the ground as if he weighed a feather, his feet dangling. He couldn't breathe as his fear increased incrementally, and that's when I spoke to him, "You think it's okay to rape, harm, and kill the innocent? You have another thing coming to you. When your soul awakes in Hell, I will be there to torment you for an eternity."

That...

That was a promise I would keep.

I could feel his life draining as the seconds passed, but before he completely ran out of oxygen and died, I had a parting gift for him. With a quick, fluid motion, I ripped both of his arms off and kneed him in the groin with everything I had. The impact itself caused a force that moved several surrounding vehicles a few feet, and all his bones in that area shattered. Finally, I snapped the man's neck like a twig with my tail, dropping his body pieces to the floor in a matter of seconds.

"Good riddance," I said with finality.

I shifted back to my shadow form, and before leaving the area, I apologized to Raziel, "I'm sorry I wasn't able to calm myself when you spoke to me; seeing everything he did to so many women and kids... it was too much..."

"I know, and it's okay, but something did get through to you. What was it?" He asked, and I involuntarily shrugged.

I wasn't entirely sure what it was, but I could at least give him an answer, "Honestly, I don't know. I felt a presence... something good, and the moment when I felt like I had lost complete control, it helped me... The best way I can describe it is a soft, bright light... it was warming and calming my heart. It might sound odd, but I felt... loved..."

"Anything is possible; we are living proof of that, but... what if it was the angel following us and she helped you? Surely, if we can track their essence, they can do the same with us?" Raziel replied, and I wondered if he was onto something.

He made a convincing point.

"That could be a possibility, but... Why would an angel help me, and if so, why did she do it like that? We don't know each other. Also, we're enemies and quite literally designed to kill each other, so... she could have just attacked me instead... This is really confusing, Raz..." I stated, feeling very bewildered at the latest turn of events, and it bothered me that I didn't have the time to dwell on it.

Either way, one thing was evidently clear.

I want answers.
