CHAPTER 34
Women Are Born Dramatic
——————————
"Ah, fuck." You woke up too early, and staying there felt suffocating knowing your aunt didn't want you around anymore. It was only because your uncle talked her to it that you could still stay, but she only gave you a week at most.
Not wanting to stay awake at that environment, you decided to get up and prepared yourself for school even though it was only 4 in the morning. Kenma was still asleep when you left the house clad in your uniform, and you went to the park to spend time while surfing on your phone for a cheap apartment nearby.
You were able to find some possible ones and contacted the owners. While you were at it, you also hunted for available part time jobs for students, and being so busy searching, you didn't realize how much time has passed, and only did when you were about to be late.
"Ah, fuck." You uttered for the second time that day before taking off, walking as fast as you can towards the station since you weren't used to running. You arrived at the school gates at the exact moment that the bell rang, meaning you were still late.
"G-Good morning—!" You greeted in a tired manner, panting to catch your breath as you stood by the doorway of your classroom. The teacher was already there, surprised to see you arrive late.
Your eyes immediately searched the room, landing on a pair of hazel cat-like ones. You haven't talked to him properly since coming back yesterday, and he wasn't responding to your texts so you wondered if something was wrong. But before you could ponder on it, the teacher snatched your attention back as he told you to take a seat.
The whole time, you would glance at Kuroo's direction and just couldn't wait for a chance to finally talk to him. The more time would pass, the more anxious you felt. However, when break period came, you still couldn't get your chance as a couple of his club members called on him for something important. The break ended without you being able to talk to him, and you were starting to feel worse at every passing moment.
Not that it was unusual. Even before, you two don't usually interact much in the classroom. But something felt off to you this time that you can't help but worry.
"That's all. Make sure y'all go straight home or study for your exams. Class dismiss."
Finally. You stood up from your seat, ready to approach Kuroo even when he was surrounded and talking with boys from the class. It's not a secret to them that you two were dating anyway.
"(Y/N)-san! Can I borrow you for a moment? Please? Please?!"
Ah, fuck.
You turned to the class rep, trying your best not to give her an annoyed look, though you didn't really try to smile and just looked at her blankly. "What is it?"
"The student council just really need top performing students to answer a survey! I promise it won't take too long!"
You glanced at Kuroo's direction, gritting your teeth irritatedly when you saw he was already leaving. He didn't even glance at you, and it made you feel disheartened.
"Ah, sorry, did you have plans with your boyfriend today? If it's too much of a bother, it's fine! I'll just look for someone else!"
You shook your head, taking a deep breath before forcing out a small smile. "Not really. I'll answer that survey."
It really didn't take too long, but the volleyball team's practice have already started when you arrived outside the gym. Seeing they were all busy and knowing they have a big game coming, you decided not to enter and simply wait outside.
'There's nothing wrong with us, is there?' You wondered to yourself, leaning against the wall just beside the gym entrance. You've been standing there for a while, lost in your own thoughts that you didn't even notice a certain first year approaching.
"Eh? (Y/N)-san?! What are you doing out there?"
Hearing a familiar voice, you snapped back to reality and found Lev looming over you with a curious expression. "Why don't you come inside? Is something wrong?"
"No, just... uh, more importantly, you're already late, aren't you?" You gave him a stern frown, in which he smiled guiltily in return.
"L-Late?! No, no! My class just finished!"
You just shrugged. Not that you believed him, but you didn't want to debate. "Whatever."
"Oh, I'll call Kuroo-san for you! You're here for him, right?!" Lev stepped towards the door, and you visibly panicked at what he's about to do.
"No, wait—"
"Kuroo-san! (Y/N)-san's here for—"
"Hey, Lev! You're late!"
"Ah, Kuroo-san went to the storage." He muttered, ignoring Yaku's remark as he turned to you. "I'll be sure to tell him though."
"Lev! Hurry and come here!"
"It's fine, I wasn't waiting for him anyway." You replied drily. "You should just go to your practice."
"Eh? Are you sure?"
"Mhm."
You waited until Lev had entered the gym before letting your tears escape. Your heart clenched at the realization that Kuroo might be avoiding you, and as your vision became blurrier from the tears that formed, you removed your glasses to wipe them off, then noticing approaching figures.
"Hmm? Nekoma's manager! W-Wha— What's wrong?!!"
You put your glasses back on to see clearer, recognizing the two guys now standing in front of you. One had white and black hair in streaks jutting upwards and resembling the head of an owl, while the other simply had a messy black hair. It didn't take too long for you to recognize them as the Captain and Vice Captain of Fukurodani's volleyball team.
"Are you alright?" The calmer one asked, handing you a plain blue handkerchief. "Here."
Your face reddened slightly from embarrassment before looking away. "I just got something in my eye. I wasn't crying."
"So they didn't bully you to the point of crying?!" Bokuto questioned, pointing at the inside of the gym as he referred to the Nekoma team. Wherever he got the idea was something you wanted to question.
You frowned at him. "Why would they do that?"
You were slightly curious as to why they were there, but you didn't really want to talk much so you decided not to ask. More figures then started getting close, composing of the rest of Fukurodani's volleyball team. Clearing your throat, you straightened yourself before turning away from them. "Anyway, it seems you're here for a practice match, so you can go inside. They're all waiting."
"Ah! So you were out here waiting for us, huh? How kind!" The Captain exclaimed, while on the other hand, Akaashi remained quiet as he looked at you with a slight frown from your obvious fakeness. He put his handkerchief back in his pocket after you ignored it.
"I have something to do, so I'm going on ahead." Without waiting for a response, you walked away and simply waved when you heard Bokuto still calling for you. It was such bad timing, and you had no choice but to keep your tears contained.
Your heart felt heavy when you headed to your classroom to get your bag that you almost forgot about. Since you didn't really feel like going home yet, you sat down on a chair and watched the sky from the window, staying there for more than an hour until it was dark.
By the time you left the classroom, it was already night and most of the lights in the building were off. You passed by the now empty gym to check if he was hopefully still there, but left the school gates alone and with a heavy feeling.
"Ah, fuck." You muttered to yourself, your voice breaking as you clenched on your aching chest. You wanted to cry, but tried your best to keep it all in and stopped walking for a while. "I'm just overthinking. I'm just overthinking."
'I can just visit him at his house, but...' Doing that made you feel like you were being a bother, specially when you felt like he didn't seem to want to talk to you for the whole day.
"(Y/N)?"
You flinched, your heart skipping a beat upon hearing a certain voice calling your name. "Kuroo..." Turning around, you saw him walking out from the school gates with Kenma beside him, and other members trailing behind.
He looked at you with a confused expresson, which immediately turned into worry as he walked faster to approach you. "You were still here?" He frowned, lifting your face up to meet his gaze. "Have you been crying?"
'So nothing's wrong after all... I really was just overthinking.' That realization made you sigh before leaning towards him, burying your face on his chest as you wrapped your arms around his torso. You didn't even care if you were just outside school, or if Kenma and the rest of his team could see you right now.
"Hey, what wrong?" He asked softly, ignoring the cheering voices of his team. He signalled Kenma to go ahead, and your cousin understood that he had to take everyone else with him and leave you two alone.
You shook your head, refusing to look up as you still embraced him. "Nothing."
"Captain, we're going ahead!"
"Bye, Kuroo-san, (Y/N)-san!"
"See you tomorrow!"
He waited until it was quiet before asking you again. But when you still refused to answer, he simply sighed and gave you a warm smile. "Then, wanna get some ice cream?"
He knew you had a lot in mind, and understood that you might not want to talk about any of it right now. He understood that maybe you just needed his presence, or simply knowing that someone's there for you and willing to listen.
"Mhm." You nodded, moving away with a flushed face now that you realized what you just did. "(Favorite Flavor)."
Kuroo grinned and nodded, taking your hand in his before you two started to walk. He would constantly glance at you, and notice how your face would slowly lighten up, and how a small smile would escape your lips— and he found it beautiful.
"Oh, I forgot to tell you. My father took away my phone as punishment."
"I see." You sighed, shaking your head to yourself. "Can I come over today?"
"Sure. Have dinner with us."
"Can I?"
"'Course."
