a few boys decided to go to the convenience store after the game. osamu and you strolled up and down the aisle looking for goodies, however, atsumu was off in the corner, eyeing the drinks.
it seemed like your talk had only worked to sooth him temporarily.
a scowl spread across your lips as you watched him. "should someone go check on him?"
osamu dismissed it. "you know how he is, just let him have his moment. he'll be fine tomorrow."
it didn't ease your mind, but you nodded slowly. your eyes kept wandered over to the blonde, the scowl on his face making your heart clench.
-
snacks in hand, you and osamu headed to the cashier.
"is your coach okay with you guys eating this?" you asked as placed your stuff on the front desk to have it scanned. "i mean.. you guys are athletes."
"no," suna responded with an impish grin. "but what he doesn't know won't hurt him." the cashier began scanning your snacks, and you spun around to face the boys behind you.
suna turned to kita who was beside him. "you won't snitch, right captain?"
kita glanced at you, a small smile playing on his lips. "no, i also want snacks."
once the cashier told you the total price, you began taking out your wallet, until osamu placed a hand over yours and forced it down, "put your wallet away, i'm paying."
"but it can be my treat–" you started, but he cut you off.
"no."
you placed your wallet back into your bag,
while osamu grabbed the plastic bag with all your snacks and started heading out.
"hey, you can pay for me if you want." suna gave you a closed-lip smile.
you scoffed. "no thanks. i'll see you guys at school. good game by the way," you told them before walking out with osamu.
you two stood outside, waiting for atsumu. after a few minutes, he finally came out with two bags.
"jesus, 'tsumu," osamu mocked surprise as his eyes landed on the bags in his hand.
atsumu ignored his comment and started walking ahead. not before giving you a small look though. you wished he hadn't though. it hurt.
you followed closely behind with osamu, worry twisting your face. your frienr acted like it was normal, but you had never seen him like this.
as you and osamu continued trailing after the setter, your stomach twisted into a knot. you couldn't shake off your concern for him.
osamu caught your look."he'll come around. he gets like this after some games."
you nodded slowly, but osamu's attempt at reassurance was a meek one. atsumu's pace didn't allow you or osamu to try and talk either, so that didn't help.
despite atsumu's mood, he had walked you home. sort of. he continued to walk ahead of you, while osamu walked by your side.
you stopped outside your door, but atsumu lingered in the drive away, only sparing you a quick look.
osamu, however, waited by the door.
"'samu.."
"i'll talk to him," osamu reassured you, earning a wordless smile from you.
you pulled him into a hug. "you did good 'samu."
"thank you, y/n. sleep well."
"you too."
-
you couldn't sleep. you tossed and turned, but no matter how hard you tried you couldn't get the image of atsumu's dejected expressions out of your mind. every time you closed your eyes, images of the blonde plagued your head.
was it normal to think about a person so much?
-
the next morning you woke up with a loud yawn, sunlight streaming through your curtains. you had barely gotten any sleep. there were too many things going on in your head. you couldn't even bare the thought of going to school, but unfortunately, you had to.
you grudgingly made your way through the halls with osamu beside you. you thought talking to your friend might clear your mind, though as he continued to speak there was a nagging thought at the back of your head. was atsumu okay?
"you know what i mean?" osamu finished as the two of you sat down at your desk. you hummed quietly in response, to which he nodded, glad that you had agreed. you didn't even know what he'd said though. all his words had sounded like a mix of incoherent mumbled in the back of your mind.
"hey," you started, biting the insides of your cheek nervously. "is atsumu okay?"
osamu thought about your question silently. "umm... well i guess. he's been real weird. normally it only take him the rest of the day to get over a loss like that, but it's taking him longer than usual."
your heart sank.
-
you followed the boy to practice once school was over in hopes you could use this time to try and talk to atsumu, but he wouldn't let you get past his distant focus.
that's fine, you told yourself.
after practice you tried again, but even then, you couldn't.
"i'll see you at home, 'samu." the boy told his brother.
your brows came together at that, "what do you mean? you're not walking with us?"
osamu nodded his head in agreement, wondering the same thing. atsumu's gaze fell on you, seemingly softening before answering, "uh—no. i'm staying to get a little more practice in."
a frown tugged at osamu's lips, "i think 2 hours of practice is enough, 'samu. c'mon."
"what about tutoring?" you chimed in.
atsumu only gave you two a dismissive wave. "coach let me. don't worry! i'll be fine. you guys go." then he turned to you, "and raincheck, yeah?" it was like you were just an afterthought.
you didn't want to leave, but after much convincing, you and osamu began your walk back home. it was filled with a comfortable silence, but osamu sensed your unease.
"what's been on your mind?" he mused.
you offered a smile of reassurance, "nothing."
"that's impossible."
"not for me," you shot back, making osamu roll his eyes.
"is there something you're not telling me?"
you surveyed his face, a sigh slipping past your lips. he was your best friend, and yet, you liked his brother.
"look, i know you and i aren't like those gross, mushy best friends that are all 'i love you' and hold hands, or whatever they do, but you can talk to me about anything. you know that, right?"
for a split second, you thought about telling him. you thought about telling him everything. you opened your mouth, but the words were stuck in your throat. you closed your mouth, deciding it was best to hold your tongue.
"i know that, 'samu and i really appreciate you. everything's good though."
osamu's gaze left yours, "okay, if you say so."

for days, atsumu continued to avoid tutoring sessions. it left your afternoons open to hang out with osamu, which you were happy for. but still, when you weren't with him, your worry for atsumu persisted.
it wasn't like him to just not talk to you.
you hated not knowing what was going through atsumu's head. but you couldn't do anything because he wouldn't talk to you, wouldn't even look at you.
-
you laid in bed, binge watching a show osamu had recommended when your phone screen lit up with a familiar name.
atsumu's call broke the three days of silence.
