Katie walks into the firehouse holding hands with Peter. 51 comes out.
Herman: Hey there they are.
Katie smiles.
Katie: Hey guys.
Mouch: Welcome back. How was your vacation?
Mills: Enjoyable.
Boden pats her back.
Boden: Welcome back Kate Peter.
Katie: Thanks.
She looks through the crowd. Kelly is no where in sight. Casey walks over.
Casey: Katie hey have you seen Kelly?
Katie: No not yet why?
Gabby: He hasn't shown up to work for the past few weeks.
Casey: He hasn't been answering my phone calls either.
Gabby looks at him.
Katie: What's going on?
Gabby looks at Casey.
Gabby: I'm so sorry Katie. Shay passed away on a call right after you left.
Katie: Shays gone!? What do you mean?
Casey: There was an explosion caused by an arsonist in the warehouse we were in. A beam came down on top of her. She didn't make out.
Gabby: We didn't want to call and ruin your vacation. We knew you needed it.
Katie breaks down in tears.
Katie: Shay was murdered?
Gabby: We are so sorry Katie.
Katie: Oh my god.
She puts her head into her hands. She looks back to the sky tears streaming down her face. Gabby hugs her.
Gabby: I'm sorry this is not the news I'm sure you wanted to hear first day back.
Katie steps back wiping her eyes.
Katie: Um how long has Kelly been missing?
Casey: Since her funeral.
Katie takes a deep breath.
Katie: Matt the cabin you and Kelly stayed at during the summer. Where is that at?
Casey pulls up with her. Kelly is sitting outside with sunglasses on sipping a beer. Katie and him get out and walk over.
Katie: What are you doing?
Kelly: I'm having a cold beer and listening to the sounds of nature. When did you get back?
Katie: Last night.
Kelly: You want one?
Katie: No I don't.
She grabs the one in his hand and dumps it out.
Kelly: Hey!! What was that for?
She lifts the recycling can lid. The thing is filled with bottles.
Katie: Kelly what the hell!?
She goes over and takes his sunglasses off. His eyes are blood shot.
Katie: What are you doing!? You look like you haven't slept in weeks.
Kelly: I can't sleep.
Katie: Why not?
Tears come to his eyes.
Kelly: Because everytime I close my eyes I see my best friend dead on the floor! I had to watch her lifeless body get picked up and put on a stretcher knowing she wasn't coming back home that night!
Katie: So you'd rather hide from the world?
Kelly: Yes.
Katie: Shay wouldn't want this. And don't tell me she would be ok with this!!
He stands up and gets in front of her.
Kelly: What do you know about losing someone? At least I take the time to grieve and not brush off the fact that someone I loved is gone.
Katie: Actually I have a pretty good idea what losing someone I love feels like. Did you forget or something that we just went to Als funeral oh I don't know less than a month ago!? Oh I'm sorry I've never been distraught over losing someone! Sitting here and drinking is eating you alive Kelly. Shay doesn't want you to grieve over her. Yes she's gone and we can't get her back. Nothing will ever be the same. And I know you're hurt and that's ok. I'm hurt too. Hurt that she is gone forever and I didn't get to say goodbye.
She wipes tears away from her eyes.
Katie: But it's been two weeks Kelly. You need to come back home and you need to show Shay that you still love her enough to pick up your life and move forward. And if you aren't going to do that and you're going to sit here and do god knows what. I'll see you around.
She walks down the path and gets in Casey's car. Casey looks at him.
Casey: She's right. Come home for Katie's sake.
He walks back up the path and gets in his truck. They take off. They pull back to the firehouse. Boden comes out.
Boden: Hey did you find Kelly?
Katie: Yes but he's mourning Shay by going through a six pack a day.
Boden puts a hand on her shoulder.
Boden: He will come through. I know him Kate.
She gives a quick smile. Boden walks away. She sits on the back of the fire truck. Peter comes over.
Mills: Hey Dawson told me about everything. How's Kelly?
Katie: He's not good. I don't know what I can do to help him either because grief is something that doesn't have a time frame. And Shay was our everything. We grew up with her since we were little. She lived right down the street. Then we all went separate ways but she was always a constant in both our lives. And she was my best friend.
She breaks down crying. Peter wraps an arm around her.
Mills: It will be ok Katie. I promise.
Casey: Hey Mills Severide.
Katie wipes her eyes and they both walk over.
Casey: Peter Katie this is Sylvie Brett she is the new paramedic.
Katie smiles.
Katie: Nice to meet you.
Brett: You as well. I'm really sorry about your loss.
Katie nods her head. Peter wraps an arm around her. They head into the common room. Gabby turns to Sylvie.
Gabby: Hey don't think that they aren't happy you are here. Katie and Shay were best friends. And she only found out this morning.
Brett: Yeah of course.
Brett walks away. Gabby looks at Casey. Boden walks into the common room.
Boden: Katie.
He nods to her. She walks into the hallway.
Katie: Yeah Chief?
Boden: Kayla got taken to the district.
Katie: What for?
Boden: Apparently she tried to buy illegal guns. Katie: I thought she at college.
Boden: Me too.
Katie: Ok I'll handle it.
Boden: Thank you.
She walks into the common room.
Katie: Peter come on.
They pull up to the district. They walk inside and up to the desk.
Katie: Trudy Antonio called Boden and said Kayla got brought in. We need to get upstairs. Trudy: Well nice to see you too Severide.
Peter smirks.
Katie: I'm sorry Trudy. It's always great to see you.
Trudy: You know the code don't you?
Katie: Thanks Trudy.
Trudy: Uh huh.
They head upstairs. Antonio comes over.
Antonio: Hey Kate. Peter.
He hugs her.
Antonio: What can I do for you guys?
Katie: We are here about Kayla. What's the news?
Antonio: She is currently being questioned by Jay and Hailey.
Katie: For?
Antonio: She tried to buy multiple guns from the South Side Gun Shop.
Katie: Guns?
Antonio: Yeah.
Katie: Did she tell you guys why?
Antonio: No not yet. We overheard of this deal going on and set up an undercover operation there. She came in. Showed us 2 grand we had to act.
Voight comes out.
Voight: Katie everything alright?
Katie: Yeah I'm fine. I'm here about Kayla.
Jay comes walking in.
Jay: Nothing she won't say anything to us.
Jay sees Katie. Katie turns to Voight.
Katie: Can I talk to her?
Voight nods.
Voight: See what you can do.
She takes off her radio and hands it to Peter. Jay takes her downstairs. Peter looks at Voight.
Mills: She knows what shes doing?
Voight: Katie is one of the greatest detectives I've ever met.
Mills: How comes she isn't one anymore than?
Peter stares at Voight.
Voight: She chose to resign after her and Kevin got accused of murdering Timothy Charles.
Katie and Jay walk into the questioing room. Kayla looks up.
Kayla: Katie thank god you came. You got to help me.
Katie sits down.
Katie: Not talking to the detectives is not helpful so why don't you tell me why you got the guns and what they were being used for?
Kayla: I can't do that.
Katie: Then I'm guessing you should get a lawyer. I need to get back to work so I'll hand it over to you Jay. Uh illegal weapons charge I believe is a felony here in Chicago so enjoy jail.
Katie smiles standing up.
Kayla: Katie wait. Daniel Moore.
She sits down back down.
Katie: Ok that's a good start. What did he want?
Kayla: He told me that he was left go from his job in the military and he needed to snag a couple of rifles. He said he didn't have a license. But I did. So I went to get them for him. I bought him 10 from a dealer on the South side. I got arrested right aways.
Katies eyes are wide and she has a confused look on her face.
Katie: Yes because you bought from a member of Intelligence who was undercover.
Kayla: Well how was I suppose to know?
Katie looks at Jay smirking.
Katie: You weren't suppose to know. That's that's what undercover means. He sent you to a shop to buy illegal guns. Intelligence got word that you were going to do this and took the hit. Kayla: What am I suppose to do?
Katie: Wait here.
She heads upstairs with Jay.
Katie: Kevin can you run the name Daniel Moore?
Kevin: Yeah.
He sits down at the computer and pulls up a file. Jay and Katie stand behind him.
Kevin: Daniel Moore ran gun and drug operations through San Francisco for the FBI.
Katie: I knew his name was familiar. But why would he want guns? If he works for the FBI it should have been easy to obtain one himself. So why get someone else to do it? Can I use your computer?
Kevin: Sure go ahead.
She runs a name.
Katie: Voight look at this.
He comes over.
Katie: Daniel Moore was at Als court order. Him and Detective Peterson worked on Als case together. Moore gets word of what we did to Peterson.
Voight: He wants his revenge.
Katie: He calls in Kayla because Kayla knows me.
Jay: And she wouldn't say anything he knew that.
Katie: And that would make it easy for him to get close to us.
Hailey: It looks like he recently lost his job here in Chicago.
Kevin: So he wouldn't lose anything by going after us.
Boden texts her.
Boden: Hey need you back at the firehouse.
Katie: Peter and I have to go. Please keep me updated.
Voight touches her shoulder.
Voight: We will. Keep an eye out. We will work this as fast as we can.
Katie nods. Her and Peter head back downstairs.
Mills: Should I be concerned? I mean it sounds like your a huge target.
Katie: If there is anything I learned from this job it's to never be afraid of threats.
They pull into the firehouse. Kelly is standing there. She steps out of the car. 51 gathers around. He looks at her. Tears fall from his eyes.
Kelly: Sis you were right. Shay is still here with us. And I have to learn to move forward without her.
He hugs her.
Kelly: (whispered) Thank you.
Katie: (whispered) You're welcome Kelly.
She pulls away. Casey hugs him.
Casey: Welcome back brother.
Peter walks over to Herman.
Mills: Everything is set in stone?
Herman: Yeah of course.
Mills: Alright you better not screw this up Herman I'm trusting you.
Herman: Everything will be fine.
(Later at Mollies)
Gabby and Casey are walking in with Kelly and Katie.
Katie: Did you say yes now?
Dawson: I did.
Katie: Aww you two are going to be amazing. Congrats to both of you.
Herman looks up.
Herman: Hey look who finally made it back to Mollies.
Katie: Been a little busy there Herman.
He smiles. Peter comes up to her. He kisses her.
Mills: Hi.
Katie: Hey you ok? You're a little shaky.
Mills: Yeah I'm fine.
She sees Voight. She walks over to him.
Katie: Hey thought this was a firefighters only bar?
She smiles.
Voight: What you don't know won't hurt you?
Katie: Any updates?
Voight: We arrested Moore and Peterson on the attempted murder of you and I.
Katie: How'd you come to that conclusion?
Voight: Well a former detective helped us come to that conclusion. We prompted an investigation. Found articles all over their houses and found a phone call conversation between them.
Katie: Wonderful.
Peter nods to Voight. 51 gathers around.
Voight: You know what else is wonderful? Katie: What?
Voight: Love. And I wish Al could be here to see you and Peter get engaged.
Katie: What?
She turns around. Peter is down on his knee.
Katie: Peter!
Kelly smiles at her. Gabby squeezes Casey's arm.
Mills: Katie Elizabeth Severide I never knew someone could make me as happy as you do. You make me so proud in everything that you have done and continue to do. Will you marry me?
Katie: Yes. 100 times yes.
He stands up and they kiss. 51 cheers.
She smiles at them. She turns to Voight.
Katie: I wished Al was here to see this too.
He hugs her. Peters mom and sister come over.
Ingrid: Oh Katie we are so happy for both of you. I can't wait for this wedding. Peter pulls Katie close to him. They both smile at her.
Brett hugs her.
Brett: Congrats.
Katie: Thanks Sylvie.
She hugs Kelly.
Katie: When did you give permission to Peter? Because I know you would have never agreed to it without him asking.
Kelly: He came to me the other night. When he came to ask me I couldn't say no. You've never been happier. And Kate Al knew.
Katie: What?
Kelly: Peter went to the jail and asked Al if he could have your hand in marriage. Al said yes. So of course I was going to say yes.
Katie: But I was with Antonio still.
Kelly: Al knew where your heart was at. Peter asked for the day he would ask you.
Katie: I wish Al and Shay were here to see this.
Kelly looks at the clock on the wall.
Kelly: I know you just got engaged and all but if you have some time think we could go for a drive.
She walks over to Peter. She pulls him aside.
Katie: I am beyond thrilled to become your wife. And I want to pop open a bottle and celebrate tonight.
Peter: Ok we can do that.
Katie: But right now I need to be with him.
She looks at Kelly.
Peter: That's your brother Kate. And I know he needs you so go be with him.
Katie: Thanks.
She kisses him. She walks back over to Kelly.
Katie: Ok Mr Severide. I'm all yours.
They walk onto the beach. Kelly hands her a beer.
Kelly: Kate this life that I get to share with you. I wouldn't trade it for nothing. I'm so glad your my sister.
Katie: And I'm glad you help keep me out of trouble.
Kelly: Likewise.
Katie: It's also pretty cool that your my brother I guess.
They both laugh. Kelly looks up.
Kelly: I wonder what they think of us.
Katie: I think they are just proud.
She lays her head on his shoulder.
Kelly: To Al and Shay.
Katie: I'll drink to that.
(Later that night)
Katie walks down a row of graves. She stops at one and sits.
Katie: Leslie Shay. Your beautiful smile and sweet words will always be the thing I remember the most. Or when you crawled up a tree and onto the roof just to hang out with me when I was grounded in middle school. I'm glad you found your way to Kelly. Us Severide siblings would have been dead without your common sense. And I hate to think you passing away brought Kelly and I together but it did. Keep watching over us. We will keep fighting for you. She puts a hand on the stone.
