Request - Y/N is really good friends with her older brother who is very protective and he hasn't met Kayce yet so now that they've been dating for a little while she invites her brother to meet Kayce at the ranch and Kayce knows how important it is to her so he gets a bit nervous to meet him and stops showing Y/N pda while her brother is at the ranch :P so a slightly nervous Kayce and maybe her brother asking what his intentions are? Asking about Monica, Kayce putting his best foot forward.
You had been watching Kayce closely all morning. He was fidgety, wouldn't stand still for long periods of time, and seemed to be thinking hard about something. If you were a betting woman, you're bet would be on the fact your older brother was coming to spend two days at the ranch.
Your older brother was your best friend. After your parents died when you were younger, it had been the two of you. When you moved out to Western Montana two years ago, you knew you would miss him terribly. But after a month of being here, you met Kayce.
Kayce had been after you since day one. But you were always cautious around men, not that anything particularly happened to you, but you just weren't that type of girl to always have a boyfriend. So, you took it slow with Kayce, and about six months after meeting him, you agreed to go on an official date.
He picked you up for a sunrise breakfast on his ranch. Then that turned into a swim in the river and horseback riding. You were pretty sure you fell in love with the land before Kayce, but it was a close race.
You and Kayce had now been dating for about a year and it was time for him to meet your brother officially. You weren't nervous because you loved Kayce. He was a good man, cared for you deeply, and had a good heart.
You heard your brother's truck pulling and stood up from the couch. Kayce had stopped pacing and looked at you.
"Relax," You told him with a sweet smile, holding his hand.
The two of you made your way to the front of the foreman's cabin but when you opened the door, Kayce dropped your hand. You thought it was strange, but the thought left your mind when your brother got out of his truck.
Smiling big, you ran down and the steps and hugged him tightly. You had missed him more than you thought. You turned and saw Kayce awkwardly standing behind the two of you.
And that's pretty much how the first day went...awkward. Kayce was quiet, more so than usual. He and your brother talked, but you were more the mediator, or your brother asked him questions. The tour of the ranch took a few hours, which you were grateful for.
Dinner was even more confusing for you because Kayce sat as far away from you in his chair as he could get. It was then you realized that since your brother got there, Kayce hadn't touched you in any way. When it was time for bed, you stood up from your seat on the couch with your brother in the living room. As you walked by Kayce's seat you leaned down, but Kayce turned his head at the last second so your lips pressed into his cheek.
You glared at him for a second before you said goodnight and walked up to the bedroom. After getting ready, and getting more irritated, you turned of the bathroom light and stood there. Feeling like this whole thing was silly, since you all were adults, you went back downstairs.
You were about to barge back in and give Kayce a piece of your mind when you heard lower voices coming from the room. Stopping just near the doorway you listened in.
"So, why'd it fail?" Your brother asked.
"My marriage?" Kayce sighed.
Your eyes got big. Why on earth was your brother and Kayce talking about Kayce's first marriage?
"We just..." Kayce paused. "It was never gonna work."
"Why?" Your brother pressed.
"Because the marriage was forced to begin with," Kayce said. "We did it for my son, but I just couldn't hold on to something that wasn't real for his sake. What's that teaching him?"
"I think our parents' generation tried to prove that even fake love was better than the real thing," Your brother said. "But it just ain't."
"I don't think I knew what real love was until..." Kayce trailed off and you stepped closer to hear better.
"Is that what this is?" Your brother asked. "With Y/N?"
"I don't know what the end goal is for her," Kayce sighed. "But for me...yeah, I'd say this is it for me. She's it for me."
"She's special," Your brother said, and you felt your heart grow.
"I know," Kayce said. "She's too good for me."
"I agree," Your brother laughed, and you rolled your eyes. "But I also see the way she looks at you...and how she talks about you."
"Like I said," Kayce chuckled. "She's too good for me."
"At least you recognize that," Your brother said. "About a year now, right?"
"Yeah," Kayce said.
"What about marriage?" You brother said.
"Honestly?" Kayce asked and he must have waited until your brother nodded. "I'd have asked her the night I met her. But she probably would have thrown her beer in my face."
You heard your brother laugh.
"She would have," Your brother chuckled. "Well...if that's what you see then that's what you see. Just...don't hurt her."
"I won't," Kayce promised.
You silently stepped back until you got to the steps and then made sure they could hear your feet coming. You bounded around the corner into the living room and saw both of them look over at you.
"Hey," You glanced at your brother before looking at Kayce. "You coming to bed?"
"Uh..." Kayce trailed off. "Well-"
"Kayce," Your brother stood up slowly. "She ain't gonna stop until you go...so go."
Kayce cleared his throat, tossing back the rest of his whiskey and walking over to where you were standing. You smiled at your brother who sent you a wink, knowing how nervous he made Kayce.
"Goodnight," You said, wrapping an arm around Kayce's and walking out with him.
The two of you made it back up to the bedroom where you climbed into bed while Kayce got ready in the bathroom. You were laying there when he crawled in and suddenly wrapped you up in his arms.
"Oh, now you wanna cuddle?" You raised an eyebrow at me.
"Huh?" Kayce looked at you.
"You've barely looked at me all day, Kayce," You laughed. "And when I went to kiss you goodnight you turned your head!"
"I don't wanna make out in front of your brother," Kayce sighed. "I'm already shitting bricks with meeting him and trying to make him think I'm decent enough to not shoot me."
You thought, even though he was blushing from embarrassment, that Kayce was being adorable with how much he had thought about all of this. You turned around in his arms and snuggled up into him.
"I wouldn't let him shoot you," You smiled. "You're too pretty for that."
"I'm being serious," Kayce rolled his eyes at you.
"I know," You pulled his lips to yours for a sweet kiss. "And I love you for it."
"Mmhmm," Kayce reached behind your head, holding you as he deepened the kiss. "You're lucky you're cute."
"Oh, Kayce!" You moaned out loud and he pushed back from you faster than someone being burned.
You busted out laughing, not being able to control it.
"I take it back," Kayce growled. "You're a cruel woman."
"Who you love," You giggled, pulling him back over to you. "My brother's room is too far to hear anyways...you need to relax."
"M'trying," Kayce laid his head on your chest as you ran your fingers through his hair.
"No need," You murmured. "Cause you're it for me."
Kayce stilled as he heard his own words from earlier. Slowly he lifted his head from your chest and looked into your eyes. You smiled softly back at him, letting him know you were serious. You felt his hands grab your waist, tugging you lower onto the bed.
Your laughter was silenced but Kayce's lips.
