'Worth it' by fifth harmony blasted through my speakers as I drove home. I felt my truck bouncing with the beat as well. Or maybe the truck is just showing signs of condemnation. Either way, it was perfect.
I drove through the sunny streets of California, appreciating the fading summer while I still can. I arrive at my street. It's not easy to miss. It's the rundown street that looks like a death beat alley at night.
Home Sweet Home, am I right?
"Kayden, honey? Is that you??" I hear my mom ask as soon as I enter the house.
We don't live in a comfortable place, (street wise) but our home was very comfortable to me. It was a two bedroom apartment. One room for my mom and the other for me...until my sis came in. She sleeps with my mom, presently. The rent isn't that expensive so most of the savings goes to the rent of the cafe and Sam's school fees.
"Yeah." I say, allowing my nose to capture the sweet scent of burritos. "Aren't you supposed to be at the cafe?" I ask, making my way to the kitchen.
"Is that supposed to be my hello kiss?" She pouted after wiping her hands on her apron.
"Sorry." I say before kissing her cheek. "Hello, mom." I say, chuckling.
"Kay Kay!!" My little demon shrieks before running to hug my leg. I lift her up and properly embrace her.
"Hey Sammy. How was school??" I asked.
"It was sooo long. I made a new friend!" She squealed. "His name is Eric."
"Eric? Should I be worried?" I asked with a knowing smirk as I looked at my mom, who nudged my arm.
"Go freshen up. I'll call you when dinner's ready." Mom says.
"Mm...it smells pretty ready to me, mom." I say, eyeing the burritos. Mom rolled her eyes at me, before going to the refrigerator, possibly to get some drinks.
Honey, you mind helping mommy cook?" She asked Sam.
"No, I don't mind. Princess Kate can help too." She said before leaving, probably off to get princess Kate.
Whoever that is.
"So..." My mom starts, giving me a knowing look. "You wanna tell me why you have a black eye on the first day?" She said with arms crossed.
Shit. I forgot about that.
"You're busted!!" I hear Sam shout from her room. That little bit-
"I'm waiting." She said.
"I got into a fight with some guys that picked on Nate. It's no big deal." I shrug.
"No big deal?! Kayden we talked about this. No more picking fights. You promised."
"Well I couldn't just stand and watch them pick on my best friend."
"That's not your decision to make. It's Nathaniel's. You're on a scholarship, Kayden. If this gets out the the authorities, you may loose it." She sighed frustratingly. "You know this. Why then do you still let them get to you?!"
She was right. I was mad about Nick always picking on Nate but the reason I attacked him was because he insulted my mother.
"I'm sorry." I sighed.
"What really happened?"
"They...they said some bad things about you and...I guess I lost it. I'm sorry but I can't stand when they talk about you like that."
"Whatever they say doesn't remove or add anything to me. You can't keep letting words to you, Kayden." She said, before grazing my black eye. "I'm proud of you for defending me. But I want my son to grow up as a wise man that knows how to control himself in times like that. Do you understand?"
"Yes. I'm sorry." I said.
"Aww, it's okay." My mom said before kissing my forehead. "Now go get ice and place it over that hideous sight."
"Wow. Way to feel better, mom. " I say before leaving to the kitchen.
"Sammy, I'm still waiting on you and princess Kate!" Mom calls.
"She taking a shower!!" Sammy hollers back, making mom chuckle.
"Guess it's just me then." She then looks at me. "Young man, what did I say about freshening up?!" She glares.
"I'm going there, ma'am." I mutter before rushing to my room.
"Busted!" I hear Sam holler again, making me roll my eyes.
