Katherine was fired from her job at Wendy's for eating the customer's food. She also arrived late to work, several times. She blamed herself for her stupid behavior. If she made it work on time, and did what she was paid to do, this wouldn't have happened.
As a result, Katherine was looking in the newspaper for another job. She decided to try out for a cleaning job at a school, that was being used as a summer camp, since all the kids were out of school for the summer. The job was to make sure the cafeteria was nice and clean, after the kids had lunch. She would have to clean lunch trays, and wipe down tables.
Katherine also thought about getting a job as a Virginia state trooper. But, she lacked the experience in that. And, she didn't even have a Virginia driver's license.
The cleaning job was her only hope.
