Night Shift

By AmorEsVerdad

After my brush with Chris this morning I was able to go home to get a few hours of sleep before needing to head back to the hospital. I had a night shift to work, and they thankfully let me out at lunch time to get some rest.

Although I got some sleep, Chris' blue eyes graced my dreams. His eyes, his voice, his smirk, I couldn't shake him. I yawn as I walk into the lunchroom to drop my things off in my locker before clocking in. Ashley, Mel, and Mandy are in there getting their things to head home.

Mel smiles sympathetically at me. "Split shift?"

I nod my head sleepily as I let out another yawn. I open my locker and start setting my things in as I try to not fall asleep standing.

"That sucks, at least Riley will be with you too. She should be in soon." Mandy offers me a small smile.

"Yeah, I saw her parking when I was walking in, thanks." I sigh as I fix the badge on my blue scrubs.

Riley walks in yawning as well with two coffees in her hands. Passing one to me as she downs hers before putting her things up. "Hey ladies! Ugh, split shifts are the worst. Thankfully we don't do them often!"

"That's almost all I worked back home, it was terrible! Thanks for the coffee by the way Ri."

She waves me off as if saying it was nothing. We say our goodbyes to our other friends, before heading out to our station.

The afternoon starts up busy with late afternoon patients, and admitted patient check-ins. The afternoon doctors seem to be a lot nicer than the morning doctors. Most of them being younger, with a lot more energy to burn.

Later that afternoon I finally get the results of Rose's tests. I get up and head to her room, and gently knock on the door before coming in.

"Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, I got Rose's results back. It looks like she cleared from flu, RSV, strep, and a urinary infection. I'm going to go ahead and call Dr. Evans so that he can make a diagnosis from her labs, and then I'll let you know what he says. I just thought you might want an update before I did." They look at me a little relieved as they nod their heads.

"Thank you Charlie." Mrs. Thompson looks at me sincerely as she offers me a small smile.

I nod my head as I smile back before heading out back to the nurses station. Night has now fallen and the usual chaos of the hospital has slowed. Not many patients come in at night, unless it's an emergency, but the emergency room floor handles that unless they need extra hands. So I buckle down for a slow night of check-ins.

I reach the station and pull up the contact information for Chris. I dial his number on the hospital phone and wait for an answer hoping he hasn't gone to bed yet.

Hello, Dr. Evans.

My breath hitches at the sound of his voice, it's interesting how official he sounds when picking up the phone. "Hello Dr. Evans, this is Charlie from Boston Children's hospital."

Charlie, hey!

His voice goes down a bit, and feel myself rub my thighs together. "Hey, um, Rose's labs came in. It's not the flu, strep, RSV nor a urinary infection, her labs all look normal except for her white blood cell count, it's low."

I hear as he shuffles around on his end. Will you read me out her lab results?

It's amazing how quickly he can switch gears to being back in full work mode. I rattle off all the lab findings as he listens and repeats some back to me making sure he heard correctly.

I hear him sigh on his end. I'm almost certain that she's got roseola. I just don't know how she could've gotten it. It's been spreading through daycares, but she doesn't go to one yet.

"Maybe a family member that does, could've passed it on to her." I suggest trying to be helpful. I grimace at my suggestion not wanting to feel embarrassed.

You're probably right, thank you Charlie. Just keep monitoring her overnight, make sure she's getting rehydrated and eating better. I'll be in first thing in the morning to check on her. So, you got dealt a split shift today?

I laugh at his shift once again. "Yeah, I did. Not the most fun, but I can't complain, it's pretty quiet right now."

I can hear him exhale a laugh into his phone. Well, if it helps, I can keep you company for a bit.

I laugh at his suggestion thinking how unbelievable he was. "You are really something else aren't you Dr. Evans?"

I hear him laugh loudly. I didn't mean it that way Charlie, and it's Chris. I meant as in I could stay on the phone a little longer with you, and get to know you better to stave off the boredom.

"Well, that's very kind of you Dr. Evans, but I've got Riley by my side tonight, so I've got company. Thanks for the offer though."

Okay, then how about dinner? This Saturday? I can take you out to my favorite pizza place just outside of Boston.

"That's very sweet of you to offer, but I'm going to have to politely decline."

Oh, come on... One date, what's that going to hurt?

"Nothing, but I would prefer not to. Now, if you would excuse me, I need to get back to work."

Okay, okay. How do you take your coffee?

"With cream and sugar, why?"

You'll see. Goodnight, Charlie.

And without another word he hangs up leaving me flustered all over again. I sigh as I sit down on my chair. And continue on with my work.

"He likes you." Riley's voice now cuts through the silence.

"What?" I look at her confused in my flustered state.

"Dr. Evans, he likes you. He flirts around, but he never asks anyone out to dinner." She smirks at me as she raises an eyebrow.

"You, heard that?" She giggles as she looks over at me.

"It's quiet enough to hear just about anything." I look away ashamed as my face turns red with embarrassment.

"Oh, come on Charlie, no need to feel embarrassed! He's good looking, you're good looking, I say go for it." I shake my head as I bite the inside of my cheek.

"I'd rather not." She looks at me like I grew another head.

"Why not? What do you have to lose?" I sigh softly before looking over at Riley.

"It's complicated Riley. I have my reasons, but I'm not ready to let anyone know about them. I have a lot to lose, let's just leave it at that." Riley looks over at me sympathetically.

"Alright, I'm sorry I pushed, Charlie." She rubs my hand as I look up at her with a small smile.

"It's alright, I understand it seems odd, but it's just something that can really happen. I'm not ready to get my heart broken again." Riley sighs as she nods her head. She thankfully drops the subject and goes back to filling out charts.

I get up every hour to do check-ins, and to inform the Thompson's about Chris' preliminary diagnosis. All in all it's a quiet night, and it shocks me that I did not fall asleep.

As morning approaches, I can feel the exhaustion radiating from my body, and can't wait to leave so that I can go home and sleep all day.

Around 6:30 in the morning Chris shows up to the hospital dressed in tight black slacks, and a tight white button up shirt that's rolled up to his elbows. His muscles bulging through his shirt, threatening to tear right off of him. What a sight that would be. I scold myself for thinking that as he makes his way to me. He clearly chose his outfit wisely this morning knowing exactly what it would do to me.

Chris hands me one of the coffee cups as I look at him questioningly. "Just a little pick me up, I'm sure you are tired after your shift."

I smile at him uttering a small thank you before sipping on the coffee. "Where's mine? I had the same shift as she did?"

Riley looks at him smirking with one eyebrow up. Chris' cheeks get a little pink under his facial hair as he rubs the back of his neck. "Sorry, I'll remember to get you one next time."

Riley walks away laughing, waving her hand dismissively as she disappears into a patient's room not before throwing a wink my way. I roll me eyes before I take a sip of my coffee.

Chris turns his attention back to me as he clears his throat. "Would you come with me to Rose's room? Give me an update as we walk?"

I nod and stand up to follow him. "Her fever is going down, but it hasn't broken yet. She doesn't seem dehydrated anymore, and is doing better with feeding and bowel movements."

"That's good, let's go check her out."

We walk into the room after he knocks on the door. He puts a bright smile on his face as he sees the little baby girl looking better than she was yesterday. "I see someone is starting to feel better. Good morning princess, how are you?"

He gets a gummy grin from Rose that melts my heart. He's obviously very sweet and loves his job. I watch as the smile on his face grows even more. He picks Rose up, and starts his check up.

"Hey princess, yes, let's see how you are doing today. Your fever has greatly gone down, that's good, you don't look to be dehydrated anymore which is great, I think all in all she's on the mend, and I'm comfortable sending her home. I was most concerned about her dehydration, but she's doing much better. Okay, mom and dad, she will need a baby tylenol and baby motrin regimen to keep her fever from spiking again. I will give you the recommended dosage. Watch her tomorrow, because if her fever breaks, and she starts getting a rash on her body, it is definitely roseola. But if it doesn't, call my office and we will get you set up here again." The parents nod along in understanding.

"Charlie here will get you all the discharge paperwork once I've completed it, and then you can go home. Any questions?" Chris looks up at both parents as he gently holds baby Rose in his arms.

The sight of this gorgeous man, holding that little tiny baby so gently in his arms, makes me have to clench my thighs together to relieve some of the ache between my legs. What is this man doing to me? I don't know anything about him, yet he makes me putty just at the sight of him. I need to keep my head on straight, I'm not going through this again.

"We don't, thank you Dr. Evans. And thank you so much for everything last night Charlie." I smile at them softly nodding.

"Well, we'll get out of your way so you can start getting ready to head home." We make our way out of the room. "What were they thanking you for?"

I blush hoping he hadn't thought much about their thanks. "Oh, um, I just made sure they had cots, blankets and such. I also made sure they were eating, as well as checking in on Rose."

Chris smiles wide bringing his hand to my face pushing a lock of my hair behind my ear. "You are something else Charlie."

I lower my head so he won't see the blush his action and words caused. "I'm nothing special, I just really like my job."

"Well that right there, makes you even more special. I would love it if you would reconsider my dinner invitation."

I sigh as I shake my head lightly. "Not likely, but thank you again Dr. Evans, it's very flattering."

He sighs, nodding his head. "I'm not giving up. I'll eventually convince you. And it's Chris."

"How, by wearing me out?" I jokingly ask.

He just shrugs his shoulders as he starts walking back to the elevator. "Maybe, see you around, Charlie."

I smile down at the coffee still sitting on the desk I had been residing. His charm is definitely going to make it difficult to resist his offer, but I need to stay strong. I don't need to leave another hospital thanks to a doctor. I actually like it here, and feel settled for the first time in my life. I don't want to lose this.
