Camilo's POV:
"Camilo! Camilo! Wait up! Oops sorry Dolores- CAMILO!" I turned around to see my cousin Mirabel rushing towards me clumsily, nearly crashing into my sister.
"Someone's in a rush." I joked as she stopped in front of me, panting heavily.
"Yeah, sorry about that Dolores-." She called back to my sister, and turned back to me. "Camilo, I hear you're having a party for your sixteenth birthday?" She grinned widely.
I nodded and smiled. "You hear correctly, why?"
"Well..." She shrugged. "I was...wondering if I could bring a friend? Her name's Y/N and she's really cool."
I ran through the numbers in my head. "Mirabel- I don't really know, I mean, the more the merrier of course!" I smiled slightly. "It's just that at this point, the casita will practically overflow with people."
Mirabel's face fell in disappointment at my words, and I instantly felt bad. "Come on Camilo, you'd really like her, at least think about it?" She pleaded, and I couldn't bring myself to say no.
"Alright alright I'll think about it." I gave in. Mirabel whooped and gave me a tight hug, before running off whilst adjusting her satchel.
Y/N's POV:
"Honestly Mirabel, you don't have to- I don't mind if-." You protested as she dragged you to the Madrigal house.
However, the young Madrigal continued to lead you up the hill. "Nope, you're coming with me to Camilo's party. End of story." She turned back to you and grinned.
"Alright then." You smiled, continuing to run after her.
"CAMILO!" Mirabel yelled as you approached the house. "CAMILO! Oh! Isabela! Over here! It's me- Mirabel! ISABELA!" She yelled loudly as she caught sight of her sister crossing the courtyard.
You laughed and caught up to your friend. "Mirabel you do realise you could just...walk up to her instead of yelling her name loud enough for the whole town to hear." You joked.
She gave you a quick side grin and the two of you stopped as you approached Isabela, who was randomly producing petals out of thin air.
"So sis, you know how I'm like, your favourite sister?" Mirabel laughed. "So I was wondering if you had seen Camilo, y'know, cause I wanted to introduce him to my great friend Y/N here-." You gave Isabela a small smile as Mirabel gestured you. Isabela didn't reciprocate in any way, and just stared at you, which made you feel slightly awkward.
"And I just wondered if you knew where he was!" Mirabel finally said, clasping her hands as she looked at Isabela expectantly.
The other Madrigal nodded, and thrust her thumb behind her, as if saying that Camilo was in that direction.
Mirabel blinked. "He's over there?"
Isabela just nodded and scratched her ear. A part of you wondered why she wasn't speaking, and your imagination ran wild thinking of reasons Mirabel's sister couldn't speak. Maybe she had been stung on the tongue by a wasp and was currently on her way to see Julieta. Maybe she was trying a new meditation method that required her to be silent for the full day. Maybe she just wasn't in a chatty mood.
Mirabel just tilted her head and stared at Isabela. "Camilo, if it's you, you have three seconds to reveal yourself. 3...2..."
Isabela spun and suddenly, she was no longer there. In her place was the slightly shorter, Camilo, with a sheepish smile on his face. It was the first time you had ever taken a proper look at the famous Camilo Madrigal, adored by all the girls in the village.
His face was framed by a mass of fluffy brown curls, his eyes were a soft shade of dark hazel, and he had a mass of freckles scattered across his cheeks and nose.
You couldn't help but be surprised. "How did you know it was him?" You asked Mirabel in awe.
She grinned. "Camilo does this thing where he scratches his ear when he's flustered, and Isabela would always seize the opportunity to show off her amazing flower powers to my friend." She scoffed. "Why were you pretending to be Isabela anyway?"
"I was just wondering what it would feel like to be señorita perfecta Isabela for a day." Camilo finally spoke up, holding his hands in the air in surrender. "Gotta say, cous, that was very observant of you." He blew a stray curl of hair away from his face.
"Anyway! This is Y/N..." You gasped as Mirabel practically shoved you in front of him, and he offered you a shy smile as you attempted to step away slightly.
"...and I just think that she'd be really fun and y'know, the more the merrier!" She finished her rant with a tight-lipped smile, her eyes pleading Camilo to let you come to the party.
He looked from you to Mirabel, back to you, then back to Mirabel, then back to you again. This time, his eyes stayed on you, and for some reason, you felt inclined to look away from him.
"Well, I guess maybe you could bring a friend. One more won't hurt." He finally said with a genuine smile as Mirabel squeaked and wrapped her arms around him in a bone-crushing hug.
"Ow." He winced, patting her on the back between wriggling out of her embrace.
Mirabel finally let go and readjusted her skirt. "I was just wondering, what brought on the sudden change of heart?"
Camilo suddenly stopped brushing down his poncho and stared at her. "Well- you know, uhm, I just thought...what's the harm in having one more person?" It came out sounding more like a question then an answer, and Mirabel looked at him for a second, clearly deep in thought.
"Alright, well, Y/N, we should really get going or we're gonna be late to the village play." She said, turning back to you.
"Oh yeah, nearly forgot about that." You chuckled. "It was nice to meet you." You smiled at Camilo, whose head whipped around to look at you.
His eyes shone as he smiled widely. "It was nice to meet you too."
"Umm, Y/N, I'll meet you at the bottom of the hill, I just wanna talk to Camilo for a sec." Mirabel said.
You nodded. "Sure. See ya." You waved to Camilo as you made your way out of the house.
Mirabel's POV:
"Go on." I smirked, placing my hands on my hips.
Camilo stared at me with an oblivious look on his face. "I don't know what you're talking about."
I sighed. "It couldn't be more obvious, you like her! You clearly do. All that staring, the sudden change of heart when you saw her?"
He started spluttering protests, but one look from me silenced him, and he sulked before letting out a heavy sigh.
"Yes. I think she's very pretty, and she seems really nice. You happy?" He rolled his eyes as I grinned.
"Very." I replied.
~a few days later~
Y/N's POV:
You made your way through the busy horde of people all rushing through the grand front day of the Madrigal casita. Almost everyone from the whole town was there, and the sound of laughter and chatter filled the air.
A large banner with the words "Happy birthday Camilo!" written in sloppy paint was hung over your head as you walked in, taking in the magnificent sight. Agustín approached you with a tray of pastries.
"Hey Y/N." He smiled, holding out the tray. "You want anything?"
You shook your head politely. "No thank you Agustín. Have you seen Mirabel or Camilo?"
He snapped his fingers and pointed up the stairs. "I actually just saw them talking by Camilo's door, hopefully they're still there."
"Okay thanks!" You smiled as you ran up the stairs, dodging the mass of people stood there.
Camilo was first to see you, as he was facing your direction. As you stepped onto the landing, he gave you a wide smile and a wave as you walked over.
"Glad you could make it." He smiled, leaning against the railing. He hadn't changed much since the last time you saw him, but he had gotten rid of his yellow poncho and was instead wearing a white button up shirt and black skinny jeans.
You had to admit, he looked good.
"Anyway, Y/N, I'm gonna go get us some drinks." Mirabel sudden piped up, and moved you until you was in front of Camilo. "You two should get to know each other!" And with that, she raced off.
You blinked but shrugged at her strange behaviour. "So err, very nice house you have here. It's big." You said lamely, trying to start a conversation.
Camilo laughed. "If you think the house is big, just wait till you see our rooms. It takes me about a day to clean mine."
You raised a brow. "Can't be that big, surely." You said, teasing him slightly.
He looked at you with interest. "Don't believe me? Come on, follow me." He beckoned you towards a shining door with his name and silhouette on it.
The two of you paused in front of it as you admired the door. Camilo grabbed the handle and held it open for you with a dramatic bow. "Ladies first." He grinned, looking up from his position.
You pretended to hold your skirt in a lady-like fashion and moved past him. "Why thank you." You laughed as you walked into his room.
Oh wow.
"Okay." You said as you looked around. "I believe you." Your neck strained as you looked up at the ceiling. "Your room is the biggest thing I have ever seen."
"Told you so." He said with a hint of pride. "Wanna know what's cool?"
You nodded.
"It has the ability to change its appearance to match my emotions." He grinned, looking around at his beloved room.
You turned around to face him, a disbelieving look on your face. "No way."
"Yes way." He laughed, and suddenly, his walls changed from a dark blue to a bright yellow.
You spun around to look at it properly. "That's amazing."
The two of you chatted for a while, and you found yourself relaxing as time went on. He was surprisingly funny, with an air of charm that drew you in. He was also a very good listener, and you found yourself enjoying his company.
"Oh- that's the time already?" You suddenly said, looking at the clock on the wall. It had been roughly 15 minutes since you had gone into his room. "We should probably go back, you can't not be there for your own birthday party." You joked.
You were just about to get up from the edge of his chair when you suddenly felt his hand over your wrist, and in one fluid motion, he had pulled you back next to him.
Due to the speed he had pulled you, you nearly fell backwards onto his desk but before your head hit the hard wooden surface, Camilo was there in an instant, with one hand on the desk and the other behind your head to make sure you didn't hit it.
Your eyes widened as you steadied yourself by gripping the chairs. Camilo was hovering above you, breathing heavily. His eyes scanned yours, searching for any sign of pain.
"You okay?" He asked, still looking down at you.
You didn't miss the way his eyes flicked from your eyes down to your lips and back again to your eyes, but you ignored it. "I- Yeah, I think so." But your mind was elsewhere, as his face was merely inches from yours.
Neither of you moved from this position for a few seconds, until suddenly, Camilo cleared his throat quietly.
"Can I kiss you?" He asked softly.
You answered by pulling his lips onto yours by the back of his neck. You could tell he was surprised, but he almost instantly melted into the kiss, slowly straightening up so that you weren't laid on the desk. The edge of the desk dug into your lower back but you didn't mind, as Camilo had wrapped one arm around your waist, pulling you impossibly closer to him.
Eventually, you pulled away, heart beating considerably faster than before, and you could feel your cheeks heating up. Camilo looked at you and grinned when he saw you blushing.
"Didn't know I flustered you that much hermosa." He winked, laughing when you gently pushed his chest.
"You're one to talk." You smirked. "The state of your room would suggest differently." You gestured to the rest of his room, and his eyes widened.
The walls, which had previously been yellow, were now a swirl of red and pink, the lamp on his desk had turned into an old fashioned candle. The lighting had become dimmer, the only light coming from a string of fairy lights above his bed, which now had a thick white blanket and two pillows, with a quote above it.
He froze at the quote on the wall, and this time, he was the one blushing profusely. It read 'Sometimes, you can't control who you like, so screw it. Take risks, and you never know what you'll get out of it.' He cleared his throat awkwardly and looked at the ground with a small smile.
"Oh really?" You teased. "You like me?"
Camilo's smile widened. "Of course I do." He said, reaching out to touch a loose strand of hair away from your face.
"I like you, and I don't have a specific reason. Maybe it's because there's nothing about you that isn't perfect, and-."
"Camilo?" Pepa's voice made the two of you look towards the door, and you both leapt onto the bed at the same time and pretended to talk and laugh. Camilo started smiling and his room changed to a less romantic mood. You could only imagine that he was thinking of the most random things, as his room started redecorating itself without a clear theme.
You laid on your side and propped your head on your hand as you pretended to laugh at something funny he said, so that when Pepa opened the door and peeked her head in, everything looked normal.
"Oh there you are! Everyone's been looking for you!" She exclaimed. "And you must be Y/N, Mirabel's friend, nice to meet you." She smiled kindly.
"Hello." You smiled and nodded politely.
"Camilo, you should come downstairs, they're bringing out the cake soon." She said, turning to her son, who was sat on the bed in an awkward position.
"Okay, just give us a minute." He replied, and Pepa nodded and closed the door.
You waited for the sound of her footsteps to retreat before the two of you burst into a fit of giggles.
"That was close." Camilo chuckled, flipping back onto his bed, which had now become arepa themed.
"Yeah." You agreed, laughing.
A few moments passed before he suddenly spoke again. "Can I take you on a date?"
You turned your head to look at him. "I would love that." You smiled.
His whole face lit up like the sun as he smiled happily. "Thank you. You have no idea how much that means to me-."
"CAMILOOO!" Pepa's voice once again interrupted his words, and he groaned.
"Coming mami!" He yelled, and sighed. "We can have this conversation later." He said to you with a small smile.
You smiled and stood up. "I'm looking forward to it." He opened his door and turned back to you.
"Ladies first." He grinned.
You laughed and stepped back into the busy party, full of laughter, joy, and celebration.
