Gally's Pov
I couldn't comprehend what Olivia had just told me. She's pregnant?! But we've never had sex, so how is that possible?!
Then I realise something horrible. It was Zart's or Sean's kid. Not mine. One of those two slintheads were going to become a father. God, I pity that child. A cheating mother and an awful father.
"I'm... happy for you" I force out my words between gritted teeth, fighting the urge to punch her in her stomach. Too far? Maybe.
"Gally, I don't know what to do" Olivia's voice cracks as she talks, giving away that she's crying. I look up for the first time since she told me the news, and see tears streaming down her face. "I can't have a child here! It's literally the worst place possible! The environment we're in could never be used to raise a kid! And I'm only- Actually, I don't know how old I am, but I'm guessing fifteen, maybe sixteen! And the two possible fathers... I'm sure the Grievers could do a better job at looking after a child than them!"
I could see how stressed she was, and that certainly wouldn't be good for the baby, so I sat beside her and pulled her into my chest.
"Stop worrying, Olivia. It'll be ok. You're going to be a great mother. Just don't let anyone you don't trust near your child, ok? I'll secretly ask for a pregnancy test because I'm sure you don't want everybody finding out yet, and I'll give it to you when nobody is looking. That way, you'll know for certain. But just imagine a mini you running around the Glade. Wouldn't that be adorable?"
"I guess" she sniffles.
"Have you thought of any names yet?"
"Gally. It's been a week"
"So? I thought girls thought of names for their future babies when they were about six or seven"
"Yeah, but for some reason, I can't remember my childhood. I wonder why"
"Good point. But I know you. I'm sure you have some ideas"
She sighs. "You're right. If it's a girl, definitely Ella. There's no doubt about that. If it's a boy... I'm not sure, actually. I like the name Nathaniel, I guess. Or Charlie"
"Could I suggest the name 'Gally'?" I joke, causing her to let out a small laugh.
"Yeah, no. I'm not naming my kid after you"
"Why not?! My name is amazing. Everybody should name their kid that, regardless of the gender" I make her laugh even more. "I can't wait to be a dad"
"What do you mean by 'dad'?"
"SHIT! Did I say that bit out loud?"
"Yeah" She nervously giggles.
"Just, uh, just forget that, please"
"Already forgotten"
"Thanks"
"You're welcome"
I noticed my arm was still around her, so I quickly recoiled it and placed both my hands in my lap.
"I'm never going near alcohol again" Olivia says after a while. "Not after what happened last time"
"That's probably for the best"
"I agree" She pauses. "There's something else you need to know" She tells me about how Zart and Sean wouldn't take no for an answer when they took her into a hut and told her what they were going to do. She said that they had threatened her, although she couldn't remember exactly what the threat was, thanks to the alcohol. It suddenly made a lot more sense. Even black out drunk, she wouldn't cheat on me, but she had no choice in the matter that night.
Hearing that was like a giant weight being lifted off of me. I felt so relieved. But also extremely pissed at the two boys who forced her into this. I vowed to myself to make sure they got Banished.
I wanted to kiss Olivia so badly, but was I really ready to forgive her that quickly? I know the whole story now, but it still happened, and she's still pregnant with a complete asshole's kid.
There it was. The weight again when I considered not forgiving her. Maybe that's what I need. Her. Maybe all I need is her. Maybe, as long as she's by my side, I can deal with anything. Maybe I relied on her a lot more than I originally thought. I don't understand how I can forgive her so easily, but here we are. With our faces slowly getting closer, until I close the gap, and our lips meet in a soft, loving kiss. I swear this girl could torture me within an inch of my life and I'd still forgive her all the same and continue loving her just as much as before.
"Guessing you're not mad anymore" she mutters against my lips.
"Only a tiny bit" I admit, not wanting to lie to her.
"That's understandable" She pulls away. "But I'm glad you're not extremely pissed anymore, y'know"
"Me too, darling. Me too"
Olivia climbs into my lap, and I cradle her, having missed her touch so much. The way her body fit perfectly with me, as if we were made for loving each other, and that was our one purpose in life.
After what seems like hours, we hear the key turn in the lock, and Minho and Newt open the door.
"You bloody idiots locked us in here!" Olivia pouts, standing up.
"What? Us? Wow. You really think we would do something like that, huh?" Minho folds his arms across his chest defensively, offended Liv would even suggest such a thing.
"What happened then?" I ask, wanting to know what they would come up with.
"It's a funny story, really" Newt starts.
"The wind slammed the door shut, and miraculously carried the key to the lock aalll the way from Alby's hut, locked it, and put it back" Minho interrupts.
"Anyway, it looks like you two made up" Newt signals to our intertwined hands.
"Yeah" Olivia blushes, standing slightly closer to me and holds onto my arm with her free hand.
"Come on. You've nearly missed dinner" Newt says.
"Shit! Frypan never got his ingredients!" Olivia exclaims.
"Princess, I'm pretty sure Fry made that up to trap us in here" I laugh at her stupidity.
"Oh. Right. Yeah. I knew that. I was just testing you"
"Sure you were, love. Now let's go. I'm starving" I tug her hand and we go and sit down.
Now that Olivia is pregnant, I know she will need extra food, so I slip her some of my stew and bread when no one is looking, knowing that it's her favourite meal. She smiles gratefully at me, then tucks in, devouring it all.
"I can't tell you how excited I am for the baby to come!" I say when we're alone in our hut with no risk of someone overhearing us.
"Baby, calm down! It won't be here for another nine months! If you're like this already, god knows how you're going to be like when it's actually close to the birth" I rub circles on her belly, then press a gentle kiss to her forehead.
Earlier, we had both agreed to never talk of the Zart and Sean incident again and just go straight back to normal, much to my relief.
"Night, Liv"
"Night, Gal" she mutters, already half asleep. I watch her as she sleeps peacefully. She somehow looked even more beautiful like this.
I played with her hair as her chest gently rises and falls. I eventually drift off to sleep as well.
I can't believe it's already time for the birth. Nine months surely can't have passed already, right?
I'm standing outside of the Medshack as Olivia gives birth, Clint and Jeff helping. No matter how hard I tried, I wasn't allowed in to watch. I was forced to listen to her screams and cries of pain as she went into labour, unable to do anything to reassure her.
I don't know how much time had passed, but what felt like decades later, I could hear Clint and Jeff's worried tone as she suddenly stopped screaming. That's it. If something is wrong, I need to see her.
I burst into the room, and see Olivia covered in blood. Her skin is pale, and her lips are blue. Her eyes are open, unmoving. She showed no signs of life.
I rushed over to her and felt for a pulse, but there wasn't one. She was cold to the touch.
She's dead.
"I'm sorry. We tried everything we could, but we didn't know how to help her" Jeff says, tears forming at his eyes.
"Let's not focus on that right now. Here, Gally. Meet your daughter" Clint smiles, handing me a bundle of blankets, and I look inside. Staring back at me was a small, fragile little baby. I looked at her, and she stared right back. I took in every one of her features, from her cute, little, button nose, to her chubby cheeks, to her tiny fists moving around wildly.
I didn't know how to feel about her. I loved her, of course I did, but she's also the reason why my girlfriend, the girl I had planned on marrying, was dead.
"What are you gonna name her?" Jeff asks me.
"If it was a girl, we had agreed on Ella, but given the circumstances, I want to call her Olivia. Her middle name can be Ella" I say.
"Won't it hurt to call her that every day, though?" Clint questions.
"At first, yes. But she'll be a reminder of her mother, and that's more important"
News about Olivia's death traveled around quickly, and it affected nearly everyone here. Liv had been important to nearly every Gladers here, and was a great friend to them. Life here will never be the same.
"Gally? Gally! You're holding on too tight!" Olivia's strained voice woke me up from my nightmare.
"Shit! Sorry" I loosen my grip on her.
"Wait. Baby, are you crying?"
"What? No!" I insist.
"You are!" She wipes the tears away from my eyes, then kisses me softly. "What's wrong? Nightmare?"
"Yeah" I mumble, then explain what happened. "Liv, what if that nightmare comes true?! I can't deal with you dying!"
"I won't die" she says firmly. "I'm tougher than that"
"I know you are, but I'm still extremely scared"
"That's allowed. But please, please don't go all super overprotective with me and not let me leave my bed. I would literally go insane if that happened!"
"I make no promises" I smirk, then kiss her nose.
This is going to be a long nine months.
