Kyra hoped that Wake didn't have another Water and Ground Type under his belt, otherwise this battle would be near impossible. She sent Luxio back out and she stood proudly on the platform, once again looking forward to battling more.
"Floatzel, let's show this trainer that a battle isn't over till it's over," Wake said, sending out his ace Floatzel.
As much as Floatzel was a strong pokémon, Kyra was actually glad to see it since Luxio's instinct to protect Prinplup's honour against Barry's Floatzel would kick in. Not to mention that they would learn a bit about how Floatzel liked to battle.
"Let's get this battle started, use Crunch," Wake called, he wasn't going to let Kyra get off the first call again.
Floatzel jumped into the water and used his propellor like tail to speed towards Luxio, giving her and Kyra very little time to react.
Since there wasn't much time to set up a counter, a confusion tactic was the best chance.
"Luxio, use Double Team," Kyra called in reply, staying as calm as possible so she could concentrate.
Luxio multiplied and had her duplicates on every floating platform, making it difficult for Floatzel to know which Luxio was the right one to target.
"Now Luxio, use Thunder Fang," Kyra said, making her attack call now that she knew Floatzel was at a disadvantage.
Luxio and her duplicates jumped at Floatzel, all of them landing a powerful Thunder Fang before Luxio jumped back to the floating platform she had been on before and calling back her duplicates.
"That's some skill, using Double Team like that takes good training. But you won't be able to deal with this the same way. Use Aqua Jet and take Luxio under the water," Wake commented, making his next call.
Floatzel took advantage of his speed and hit Luxio, taking her underwater as he returned to his comfort zone.
"Under the water? With an Electric Type? You're forgetting what move ultimately finished off your Gyarados. Use Discharge," Kyra called, forgetting that Wake was a Gym Leader and would most likely have a strategy.
As Luxio powered up her Discharge, Wake smiled, making Kyra worry that Wake had planned for Kyra to call for Discharge.
"Use your flotation sac as a shield," Wake called, taking Kyra by surprise.
The rubber from Floatzel's floatation sac expanded and absorbed all of Luxio's Discharge, not taking any damage whatsoever.
"Good, now throw Luxio out of the water with Ice Fang," Wake said, taking back control of the battle.
Floatzel grabbed a hold of Luxio and flung her out of the water. Luxio stuck her claws out and skidded along the floating platform, her claws stopping her from falling into the pool again.
"You ok Luxio, can you still battle?" Kyra asked, worried that Luxio wouldn't be able to get to her feet again.
Luxio nodded and got to her slowly feet again, emitting a blinding glow as she did so.
Luxio grew bigger and her mane grew larger too. Her star tipped tail became longer and the star grew to match. Luxio was evolving.
Kyra got her pokédex ready, curious to learn more about her newly evolved pokémon.
"Luxray, the Gleam Eyes pokémon, an Electric Type, and the fully evolved form of Shinx. With its excellent vision, Luxray can see their opponents no matter where they are or what they are hiding behind,"
With Luxray's new power, Kyra was sure that this battle would soon be over. Luxray not only was strong already, but she was even stronger now.
Luxray snarled at Floatzel, she wasn't going to let her opponent get the upper hand again in this battle. Flotzel had resurfaced again and began snarling back, he wasn't going to let Luxray win if he could help it.
"If we can't use Discharge, we'll just attack close range. Use Thunder Fang," Kyra called, knowing that Thunder Fang was her best call besides Crunch if Luxray could pull it off before Floatzel could retaliate.
Luxray jumped between the floating podiums to where Floatzel was, but Floatzel dove underwater before Luxray could land her attack.
The pair continued their turn for a while, Luxray trying to land a Thunder Fang whilst Floatzel would always be just fast enough to avoid it.
Wake had already guessed what Kyra was planning, he was well expecting another Discharge call. But that call never came.
"Now Luxray, use Double Team followed up with Crunch," Kyra called, making her move now that Floatzel was more worn out.
Luxray nodded and duplicated herself once more, all of her duplicates targeting Floatzel along with herself.
Floatzel was overwhelmed by the powerful attack, not being able to stop itself from being flung over towards his trainer where he lay unable to battle.
Luxray called back her duplicates and stood where she was on the floating platform, she could sense something was wrong. Despite having won the Gym Battle, something still felt off.
There was a sudden loud bang from outside. Scaring everyone in the Gym, let alone Luxray.
Kyra could see Luxray beginning to get stressed, she knew she had to help her calm down. "It's ok Luxray, I'll come to you," she said, jumping between the floating platforms to where Luxray was and she hugged her.
Luxray however was too scared to realise what was going on. The loud bang was bad enough, but when a second one sounded not long after, she fought back the only way she knew how. Discharge.
Kyra didn't have time to get away before being hit with Luxray's Discharge. The high voltage attack was painful, but Kyra wasn't going to let her pain stop her from helping Luxray stay calm.
"Lux...ray. Stop. It's me...please," Kyra said, struggling to get her words out as her body was shocked.
It took Luxray a couple of seconds to realise she had hurt her trainer and she stopped her attack. But enough damage had already been done.
Kyra fell limply to the floating platform beside Luxray. Luxray gently nosed Kyra's chest to try and wake her up, but Kyra didn't stir.
Wake could see just how bad this was. Pastoria City had a small hospital for minor injuries, but the closest place that would be able to handle something to this extent was Veilstone City. He saw that Nate, Willow, and Kyra's pokémon were becoming increasingly more worried about both the two bangs and Kyra. Going over to her and crowding around her would make matters worse. He returned Floatzel to his pokéball and got to explaining what he wanted everyone to do.
"We need to go and investigate those two bangs, they sounded like explosions so it'll be dangerous I have no doubts. Kyra also needs seeing to as soon as possible, a shock from a Discharge that powerful can't have done her any good. It's obvious that you'd care and worry about her, but let me handle things here and you go to investigate the bangs. I think they came from somewhere near Lake Valor," Wake explained, hoping that Nate, Willow, and Kyra's pokémon would go without questioning him.
Willow was about to protest, but Nate stopped her, as much as he was worried for Kyra, they wouldn't be any help to her here. Lucario, Eevee, and Luxray all wanted to stay with Kyra, but they too knew that they wouldn't be any help to her now. Luxray nosed Kyra again before going over to Lucario and Eevee, hoping that it wouldn't be the last time she saw Kyra.
If the bangs had indeed been from Lake Valor as Wake feared, it would take much longer than normal for an ambulance to get from Veilstone to Pastoria. It was much slower normally, but this time it would be quicker to get an ambulance to come out from Jubilife City since it would definitely be able to get there.
Wake carefully checked that Kyra was still breathing before anything else, sending Quagsire out to counter any potential remains of electricity running through Kyra's body.
It wasn't abnormal for an Electric Type to lose control of its power in a Gym Battle due to excitement and the trainer feel the shock of it slightly, but this was the first time it had been a major issue. Wake couldn't help but hold himself responsible, he wasn't the one to have caused Luxray to become so scared, but he hadn't actively done anything to stop it either.
It was an exceedingly tense wait for the ambulance to arrive, Quagsire tried to keep his trainer calm and assure him that Kyra would be ok, but even he was worried himself.
The ambulance crew assured Wake that Kyra would be able to recover, it was just a matter of how long it would take. Draining the electricity from her body was a long process since it couldn't be done too quickly, but it was at least doable. Wake thanked them for coming out so quickly and healed up his pokémon before heading out to join Nate and Willow in helping them investigate the mysterious loud bangs.
