Third person POV
The Mills gave Emma and Killian the grand tour of their little paradise. It wasn't just paradise to Regina and Robin, after the horrors Emma and Killian had faced in the Enchanted forest, the quiet little town of Storybrooke was just what they needed.
The ex pirates weren't the only ones who had dropped into the town in the last 2 months, so naturally the mayors office had to come up with a system to make it simple for their new arrivals to settle into the customs of this land. Being cursed had the upside of being able to work technology. Those who dropped in didn't have that upside.
Regina and Robin's system offered:
- A technology information course
- A temporary apartment until the occupant(s) become financially stable.
-Help and support finding a job.
-$1000 per month (bills and rent are payed for by the council)
-A 'realm card' that gives them discounts at bars and restaurants
Being able to make their own town left them able to make laws and have money to give newcomers without going bankrupt.
As it was late in the evening by the time the tour had finished, Regina led the couple to the apartment they would be staying in for the foreseeable future.
"Just up these stairs is the apartment. It's not a palace that's for sure but its got running water and 2 bedrooms." Regina rambled to the couple, her fiancé having gone home half an hour earlier to put Roland to bed.
"Oh please. Anything will be better than the small cabin on Killian's ship."
"Hey! Insulting my ship is just going too far Swan, even for you!"
Emmer sniggered at her joke. She loved the ship, of course she did, it was the first place she felt at home but even Killian had to admit that it got crowded at times. She rubbed his arm lovingly and then continued whilst Regina, who had stopped at a door and was fumbling around in her pocket for something.
"Ah. Here it is." Regina turned to Emma and handed her a small silver key that she said was the key to the apartment. She explained about the newcomers programme and what it offered them and then gave them a bag from Grannies Diner, since she guessed they don't want to do any cooking this late at night.
The mayor left the couple for the night to settle in. They planned to meet at the loft (which is the nickname Emma and Killian gave to the apartment) the following afternoon to discuss career options for them and to check up on how they were settling in.
"It's perfect, Killian." Emma gushed, awestruck at how lovely the town was and how perfect it seemed.
"Aye, this little place certainly is something."
"We're finally going to be safe! We're gonna be able to raise our child in a place where my parents aren't threatening to kill you every second."
"Aye love, our childhood's may have not been the best but we are going to give our little lad or lass the best damn childhood ever!"
Emma laughed as Killian sealed his sentence with a kiss. A kiss that wasn't rushed or mixed with tears and apprehension, just a normal loving kiss.
That morning Killian woke before Emma as he usually does. He admired how the light shone through the gap in the curtain and made her hair look like it was glowing, he loves her, he'd never been so sure of anything in his entire life. He loves her and he loves their unborn child just as much. For the first time since he was five and his mother caught the disease that ended her life, Killian Jones could finally say that he had a family. One that he cared for more than he cared from his own life. After all there were only 2 things he would risk his life for, love and revenge and its safe to say he will never need to risk his life for revenge ever again.
Killian got up and went to investigate this worlds cooking machines. He was never really good at cooking and neither was Emma but he supposed that they would both learn together, as long as he's with her, he's happy.
He found the thingy that Regina said was used to cook things and inspected it more carefully. It had 4 circles and some metal things over it. There were a few buttons underneath it. It couldn't be that hard to work could it?
Killian took a wild guess and pressed one. It did nothing, so he twisted it instead. When he did a clicking noise filled his ears and he jumped back in shock. Tentatively
he walk towards it again doing the same thing but pushing it as well. That's when things went south. One of the circles erupted into flames, Killian being the idiot he is decided it would be a good idea to put his hand in it to test if the flames were real. They were. He learned that pretty quickly.
So that's what Emma woke up to on her first night in Storybrooke. A rather loud yelp of pain and a string of curse words in her fiancés voice. It's safe to say that when Emma found out that he'd woken her up because he was stupid enough to put his hand in fire, she was not pleased. At all.
Regina and Robin got a shock when they walked into the loft that morning to Emma frantically trying to put out the stove and Killian sulking in a corner.
Regina ran over and turned off the stove while Robin went to investigate why Killian was sulking and ended up in a fit of laughter when he found out he'd put his hand in fire, which made Killian laugh too.
Regina taught Emma how to use various kitchen appliances while Robin took Killian to the hospital to check that he was ok, they both needed a check up anyway, Emma would just go later. Emma and Regina got to know each other a lot better during their time without the boys. They were becoming very fast friends. Robin and Killian also hit it off better than either of them expected, finding it easy to talk about anything.
The little town of Storybrooke was already starting to earn a special place in Emma and Killian's hearts, as well as it's people.
It was about 1pm when the four of them finished their lunch (which Emma had made with the help of Regina, and was very proud of, although she found the food in this realm very strange) and they decided that the newcomers clothing was not very suitable for this realm.
The four of them headed out of the loft and went to one of the few clothing stores in the small town. Emma bought a few jumpers and tops and even a grey tank top with some pleading from Killian who insisted she would look amazing in it. Killian himself seemed reluctant to buy anything, turning down most things subtly at first but it became so obvious that Robin teased him about having 'attachment issues' to his leather pirate attire. The teasing continued when they'd been in the 3rd shop and all Killian had bought was 3 pairs of the same jeans. Regina had one last idea and just hoped it would work because she was getting tired and really wanted to go home, Roland would need picking up from nursery soon.
The group followed Regina through an alleyway that led off main street. They came to a small shop named 'clothes and cotton' where there was a display in the window that showed 2 mannequins both wearing leather which caught Killian's attention. Emma breathed a sigh of relief when Killian actually showed some interest in a few shirts they found inside the shop, even though they weren't the most interesting items. They were black short-sleeved shirts that had buttons down the middle and by the end of the trip, she had managed to get him to buy 8 shirts that weren't all the same! Three were black, two were navy blue, (not a great difference but Emma still counted it as a win) one was a dark red and Emma made him get two navy blue t-shirts with a little ship embroidered on the small pocket in the top left hand corner. Emma didn't leave the shop empty handed either, Killian saw a red leather jacket and a black leather jacket on some hangers while Emma and Regina were talking with the store owner, upon further inspection he found that the red one was a woman's jacket and the black was a mans. It took some pleading but they ended up getting them much to Emma's dismay, she says she doesn't want to wear leather but secretly its her favourite thing they bought today and its not because it looks amazing on her either. Its because Killian looked at it and thought of her, it's because he chose it and he begged her to buy it, much like the tank top which was her second favourite, though she's sure if Killian had a matching one of them she'd love it just as much.
2 months later
Emma and Killian by now knew almost everyone in town, being fair to them they didn't really have a choice with Emma being the saviour and everything. The technology courses were turning out to be really helpful although Killian missed 3 of them due to illness, so while Emma was really getting the hang of this new realm Killian was a hopeless case. He now knew how to work the oven and the hob and thankfully he partially knows how to use a phone, he didn't miss those lessons, he also knows what a TV is but when it comes to operating it...
Nope. Just nope.
He cannot even come to terms with the fact that there are boxes that magically make all of your clothes and dishes clean again with the touch of a button.
Emma took her driving test a few weeks ago, but she still doesn't have a car. They are saving up for one but they also have other things on their mind at the moment. One of them being that they can't live off the money that they get from the council forever.
"I've got it, I found you a job!" Regina burst in through the doors of the loft brandishing a few pieces of paper in the air, catching Emma and Killian kissing sweetly on their settee.
That's the other thing worth mentioning, the Mills family have grown close to the Jones couple, they aren't technically married yet but Emma likes to be referred to as Jones, it just helps her shut out what her parents did, helps her distance herself from them.
"What?" Emma asks pulling away from Killian and walking over to where Regina stood.
"Sorry am I interrupting something?"
"No,"
"Yes"
Emma and Killian answer simultaneously.
"Anyway, you said you found a job for us." Emma turns her attention back to Regina after giving Killian a death stare for his comment.
"Yes and I honestly don't know why I didn't think of it before now. So the sheriff station has had a vacancy for as long as I can remember and-"
"Hold on a second love," Killian interjected, standing up and walking over to his fiancée "your not going to seriously tell me that you want ex-pirates to run your sheriffs department are you?"
"Well why not, as long as you aren't planning on doing any pillaging or plundering any time soon, or at all, I already have all the papers ready to go, all you have to do is sign here, here and here." Every 'here' was punctuated with a point of Regina's finger and some rustling of papers to where they needed to sign.
Emma and Killian looked at each other and Emma shrugged as if to say 'why not,' and with that Killian turned his head back to Regina and took the papers. They both signed them and gave them back to Regina.
"Alright so you can start on Monday I'll send you everything you need to know and you can read over it before then. There's a crash course on it on Saturday that you'll need to attend but for now I have 2 badges, you'll both be payed the same and work the same hours but I need one of you to be the sheriff and one of you to be the Deputy for official purposes, so who's who." Regina of course already knew the answer to this one she just thought it would be funny to put it like this.
"We really don't mind, just randomly pick one of us." Emma compromised, Regina also expected this response and had an answer planned.
"Well who is the most authoritative out of the both of you"
"Me obviously." Emma just laughed at him and raised her eyebrow at Killian, "Emma, Emma is the most authoritative."
It was worth it, Regina thought as she gave them their badges and left the loft.
"Everything's falling into place Killian. We might actually get a happy ending here."
"Of course we will my love. You'll see." Killian placed his hand on Emma's baby bump. Kissing her forehead gently. Emma was now 14 weeks pregnant and just starting to show but ever so slightly. When they found out there was a thing in this world that would let you see your baby before it is born they were over the moon. Emma went for her first ultrasound a couple of weeks ago and Killian actually started crying tears of joy when he saw the screen, he was holding Emma's hand so tightly it started to go numb, not that she could tell as she was too fixated on the screen that showed the little human growing inside of her.
"I have a surprise for you, one more step in the right direction of making this place our home." Killian announced after a while.
"What is it."
"Surprise love, follow me." He took her hand and led her out of the loft and down the stairs. Once they got to the door that lead them out of the apartment block Emma reached to open it but Killian gently grabbed her hand and brought it back down to her side, placing one hand over her eyes and opening the door with the other. When they had made their way out of the door and Killian had shut it behind them, he put the other hand over her eyes as well. They walked round the side of the building and then stopped. His hands no longer covered her eyes and she could see the thing in front of her.
"Killian! You didn't!"
"I'm afraid I did love."
"I love you" With that one sentence she threw herself at him, both of them perfectly happy at last.
She pulled away to admire the gift her true love had given her. It must have cost him a fortune Emma thought, where did he get that kind of money? She walked up and ran her hand across the bonnet of the small yellow VW bug, the one she had seen in the dealership when they walked past one foggy day and commented on how much she liked that colour yellow and how cute the shape of the car was. When she reached the handle she pulled expecting the door to open but instead it stayed firm.
"You might want the keys first." Killian laughed.
"Oh yeah, right." Emma walked up to him and kissed his cheek taking the keys whilst doing so.
She opened the car door and sat in the drivers seat closing her eyes and taking in the smell like she used to do on the Roger, taking in every little perfect smell the feeling of the wheel the seat the handbrake. Emma's eyes fluttered open expecting to see her devilishly handsome pirate in the passenger seat and instead her eyes set on him still stood on the pavement, watching her through the windscreen.
"Well? Get in then!" She shouted through the open window.
Smirking he made his way over to the passenger seat, hopping in and closing the door behind him.
"Well Captain Swan, where to?" Killian asked.
"Captain Swan?"
"Well you can't have Jones that's me, figured you wouldn't want Charming, Swan was the only other logical option."
"Captain Swan is also like a combination of our nicknames for each other." Emma pointed out.
"So it is."
"We can be the Captain Swan family until we get married."
"I like it. Captain Swan it is!"
"Captain Swan it is!"
A/N: I am so so sorry that I haven't updated in ages, I have had a bit of writers block but now I think I'm over it. This chapter was mainly just snippets but next chapter is a good one. I hope. I should have it up quicker than I did with this one. I've written half of it I just need to get it proof read. This story will only be 2 more chapters long but I AM doing a sequel that I'm very exited about. The children will be main characters in it. That's all for now hope you had a great holiday.
Bye for now
