The grass was warm and soothing from the afternoon sun, and I felt myself drifting into a peaceful rest as I laid there, sprawled out completely.
The sunlight soaked into the black fabric of my clothing, making it feel like I was being wrapped in a welcomed hug.
I let out a soft sigh of relief, letting a small smile curl up on my lips. How could I focus on anything else on a day like today? It was just too perfect.
All my training would have to wait.
"Kelp."
My heart fluttered as I heard my favorite voice, and I peeked an eye open as I turned my head, seeing Inumaki walking towards me.
"Hi there," I breathed out as I closed my eyes and returned to my sun-soaking.
Inumaki was a second-year who I had only known for a few months now, but I always felt myself a little more at ease when he was around.
His presence was so comforting. He didn't talk much because of his technique, so I really didn't know much about him.
Even so, just his energy was enough to reel me in... We always say what we can, but I wish we could have real conversation. I'd love that.
He hummed softly as he laid down next to me on the grass, placing his hands behind his head.
"It's a little warm out," I spoke up after a moment. "But still, I prefer the sun to the shade."
I turned my head and opened my eyes to see him already looking at me. I smiled softly at him, "Which do you prefer?"
His eyes drifted around as he thought it over, and then he nodded up towards the sky, indicating he prefers the sunshine too.
"Good choice," I nodded. "Now, for the real question... Daytime or nighttime?"
"Hmm," he hummed before nodding up once again.
"Mm," I smirked. "That's where I'd have to disagree. I've always liked nighttime more."
He turned his body to face me, holding his head up with his hand, "Seaweed?"
"I just connect with the moon energy in a special way," I shrugged. "It fits more with my soul."
I glanced over at him, "I'm actually surprised. You seem to give off more of a moon vibe yourself."
"Seaweed?"
"Well, honestly, whenever you're around I feel lighter. So I just assumed we'd have that in common," I said before looking over at him. "Maybe it's more we balance each other out rather than share similarities."
His eyes stared thoughtfully back at me, and I so badly wanted to know what he was thinking. Over the last couple of weeks, we've been spending more time alone together.
It wasn't much, just small, stolen moments like this one. But to me, it was so special.
"Y/n!!" another voice called out. "Why the hell are you all the way out here?!"
I broke my gaze away from Inumaki and sat up, watching as Yuuji and Megumi approached.
"Where's Nobara?"
"Training!" Yuuji yelled. "Just like you should be!"
I let out a loud sigh before plopping back on the ground, watching the clouds as they slowly rolled by, "I'm so sick of training..."
"Salmon."
I couldn't help but laugh, "Oh please Inumaki. You train pretty much harder than anyone."
"Maki and Panda are looking for you too, Inumaki," Megumi huffed out.
"Bonito Flakes."
Megumi sighed, "You guys can't just lay here all afternoon. We have to get ready."
"Ready for what?" I huffed out.
"For fighting curses, Y/n!! What else?!" Yuuji yelled.
I smirked as I looked over at Inumaki, "They're way too loud."
"Salmon."
"Y/NNNN!!" Yuuji whined.
I ignored my teammate, "Totally killing the vibe, right?"
"Salmon."
"You're wasting our time," Megumi huffed. "Gojo-sensei told us to come get you, so hurry up."
"Oh come on," I huffed as I sat up. "You guys have been training hard all day! Come take a break with me. We can find shapes in the clouds!!"
I laid back down as they mumbled to themselves.
"Ooh! Look there!" I squealed as I pointed my finger upward. "That one looks like a bear with a birthday hat!"
"What?! Where?!!" Yuuji called out excitedly as he laid next to me. Megumi let out a loud sigh before joining us.
"See! Right there!" I said again as I continued to point.
Yuuji pouted, "I don't see it."
"She clearly made that up," Megumi grumbled.
"No I didn't!"
"Bonito flakes."
"Hmm... Inumaki, are you saying bonito flakes as in no, there isn't a cloud shaped like a bear wearing a party hat? Or are you trying to point out a cloud shaped like bonito flakes?"
It was rare, but my heart fluttered as I heard a small laugh escape his lips. I quickly turned my head so I could watch.
His smile was always covered by his jacket, but I loved watching as his eyes squinted with happiness.
"This is boring," Megumi complained.
"Only because you have no imagination," I quickly shot back. "And you're not one with nature like me and Inumaki."
"Y/n! I'm one with nature too!" Yuuji whined.
I let out a small laugh, "Of course you are, Yuuji... It's just Megumi's lame ass."
Megumi grumbled something under his breath like the grumpy old man he is. I had started at Jujutsu High late into the year, but my fellow first-years already felt like family.
Almost like younger siblings. I was technically old enough to be a second-year, but since I started sorcery late, they made me start at the beginning.
The second-years were already too advanced for me to keep up with. Or at least that's what they said... I'm pretty sure they just wanted Gojo keeping an eye on me.
"Salmon Roe!" Inumaki yelled as he pointed up. We were all shocked to hear his voice call out so loudly, but I was really excited to see what he was pointing at.
He quickly looked over at me, his eyes turning upward as he smiled.
"It looks like a butterfly," I breathed out.
"Salmon!"
I couldn't help but laugh a bit, "You pointed it out for me?"
He nodded before gesturing to my arm. I was only 17, but I had a small black and white butterfly tattoo on the back of my forearm, kind of near my elbow.
I haven't really had an easy or a normal life, but like I said, I always felt connected to nature. And I got the tattoo as a reminder of all the little things that make me excited to be alive
It may be sad to some.. But beautiful, seemingly insignificant parts of this world, like a simple butterfly, is what carried me through the hard days when I wished I never would've woken up.
I couldn't break my eyes away from Inumaki. Those precious, violet orbs, they drew me further in with every moment.
Maybe I should just tell him how I feel... But then again, I really enjoyed his friendship. It would be such a shame if I ruined that.
Especially since there's no way he would reciprocate.
