Stephanie woke up the next morning to someone lightly shaking her. She groaned tiredly, opening her eyes to see Melissa giving her a soft smile. Stephanie's brows furrowed as she looked around the hospital room. "Where's my mom?"
"She decided to let you get some rest here. You're gonna need to head to school soon though, Stephanie. It's the first day." Melissa said softly but her voice was loud enough to wake up Isaac who had curled into Stephanies side. Stephanie shook her head, rubbing her eyes. "I'm gonna stay here. My first period is helping the office and there's usually nothing on the first day."
Melissa sighed, turning to Isaac. "We need to check if you healed." Isaac nodded, lifting up his hospital gown. Melissa slowly unwrapped his side and Stephanie sighed. "Yeah. Yeah, that's healing. Wow." Stephanie muttered, watching as the scratches on Isaac's side healed by the second. Melissa shook her head at the sight. "They can't see this. Nobody can see this."
Isaac sighed, shutting his eyes. "All right, cover it up." Stephanie quickly nodded, helping Melissa rewrap him as the woman shook her head. "I-I don't think that's gonna matter. I mean, you're scheduled for surgery, which is obviously gonna be very confusing for a lot of people."
"Okay, can you do something?" Isaac asked in a hopeful voice, looking up to Melissa who just laughed at his question. "Me do something? I'm relatively new to all of this. And there's a sheriff's deputy that's stationed right outside the door. Have you tried calling Derek?"
Isaac sighed, shaking his head. "Like, five times." Melissa sighed, crossing her arms. "Do you have any other emergency werewolf contacts?" Stephanie but her lip nervously, looking to Isaac who already knew what she was thinking. He nodded his head, making Stephanie look up to Melissa. "I can get Scott."
...
One thing was for sure, Stephanie Saticoy-Miller was not a runner.
But considering she had no car, she ran to the school from the hospital and when she got to the High School, her eyes fell on the doors opening, Scott practically running out. When he saw Stephanie, he quickened his pace, running towards her and his bike.
"You... I... Hospital... Now... Isaac..." Stephanie mumbled, trying to catch her breath as she rested her hands on her knees. Scott chuckled at her, throwing her his extra helmet as he got onto his motorbike.
"I know. Hop on."
...
"Why didn't you tell me before?" Scott complained to his mom as the three walked down the hall of the hospital. Melissa sighed, shrugging. "Honestly, I was hoping I didn't have to. And Sabrina called Stephanie last night and told her."
"You've known all night?!" Scott whisper yelled to Stephanie who glared at him. "Why do you think I haven't gone to school yet?" Melissa quickly tapped Scott's shoulder to have him look at her. "I told her not to call you when she first found out." Scott's face softened, looking at his mom with confused eyes. "What do you mean?"
"Everything that you've been doing... the extra reading, the summer school, saving up for the bike, even though it scares me half to death... honey, I just didn't wanna disrupt a good rhythm."
Scott shook his head, turning to his mom fully. "It's not gonna stop. I-I'm gonna be better this year. A better student, a better son, a better friend, a better everything. I promise." Melissa looked at Scott for a few seconds, trying to catch him in a lie before nodding her head. "Okay. Stephanie can show you to his room if he isn't already in surgery."
Scott nodded, sending his mom a smile. "Thank you." He turned to Stephanie who nodded her head to the elevators. "Let's go."
As soon as they were both in the elevator, Stephanie clicked the button for the second floor. The elevator doors started to close before a walking stick stopped them. Scott jumped to help open the door as the man walked in.
"Would you hit the button for the second floor, please?" The man asked and Stephanie smiled, nodding her head. "Yeah." She reclicked the button and the man smiled. "Thank you, Sweetheart." He sang and Stephanie let out a hum.
When the doors to the second floor opened, Scott and Stephanie waited for the man to walk out first but he instead stayed where he was. "You wouldn't mind helping me out for a second, would you?" Before Stephanie could even answer, the man placed his hand on Stephanies elbow, making her clear her throat. "Um... sure." She turned to Scott and nodded in the direction of Isaac's room. "215." Scott nodded, running down the hall as Stephanie turned to the man beside her. "Where do you need to go?"
"Room 230, please." The man answered and Stephanie nodded her head, walking down the hall, immediately knowing where to go from her mom working here.
Stephanie turned down one of the last hallways with the man just as her mother did. Sabrina chuckled, being slightly startled by her daughter. "Oh, hey pumpkin. You here to see Isaac?" Stephanie nodded, turning to the man beside her. "I was just gonna help this man to room 230 and then I'd head over."
Sabrina shook her head at Stephanie's words. "Oh, I can take him. You go check on Isaac." Stephanie nodded as the man turned in her direction. "Thank you for helping me..." "Stephanie." The girl replied, noticing he was trying to realize her name. The man instantly smiled, nodding. "Thank you, Stephanie." The man said.
Sabrina took a small step closer to the man. "Sir? I'm Dr. Saticoy but you can call me Sabrina. I can take you to the room you needed to go to." The man instantly smiled, turning into the direction Sabrina was. "Thank you." He reached out for her arm, Sabrina helped him grab her arm before leading him to the room he needed to go to.
As soon as the two rounded the corner, Stephanie ran down the hall towards Isaac's room, hoping to find him and Scott.
Stephanie took a sharp turn down one of the hallways and came face to face with Scott. Stephanie tried to catch her breath as the elevator doors dinged. She and Scott turned their heads and saw a man dressed as a nurse wheeling Isaac. He lifted up his hand to wave tauntingly, showing off his werewolf claws.
The two immediately started running towards the elevator as the doors closed. Stephanie knew she wasn't fast enough to make it and stopped running. She shot her arms out and stopped the doors from closing all the way, giving Scott enough time to get in before she dropped her arms, the doors closing.
She ran down the stairs of the hospital, mindlessly running to the elevators where Derek stood, waiting for the doors to open.
When the doors did open, Stephanie quickly grabbed Isaac's wheelchair, wheeling him away from Scott and the other werewolf as the stranger growled. "I'm an Alpha."
Derek sank his claws into the mans back, throwing him on the ground. "So am I." When the man fell unconscious Derek smirked, looking up to Scott and Stephanie. "Aren't you two supposed to be in school?"
...
"You don't still live here, do you?" Stephanie asked slowly, looking around the Hale house. Derek sighed, placing Isaac on the table. "No. The county took it over, but there's something here that I need. It'll help heal a wound from an Alpha."
"Yeah, but it did heal." Scott said, gesturing to Isaac's chest. "Not on the inside." Derek mumbled and Scott looked at him worriedly, taking a step towards him. "Hey, are you gonna tell me who that was back there? That Alpha." Derek sighed, looking through the cabinets. "A rival pack. It's my problem. I know you wanna help, and you did. I owe you one. Now go home. Go back to being a teenager."
"Alpha pack." Stephanie mumbled under her breath in realization. Derek's head shot up, hearing her words, Scott too busy on the phone with Stiles to hear her words. "How do you know about them?"
Stephanie gulped. "They uh... they killed my birth mom. My birth dad wrote me this whole letter that he wanted me to read on my sixteenth birthday and-" Stephanie looked up at Derek, shrinking at his annoyed expression. "And it's a story for another time I'm guessing..." Stephanie mumbled as Scott hung up with Stiles, turning to Derek.
"Uh, hey, Derek. If you wanna repay back that favor now... There is something you can do for me." Scott said as Stiles and Will entered the house. "My tattoo... It healed." Scott said, rolling up his sleeve to show where his tattoo would've been. Derek squinted his eyes, nodding. "Yeah, I see it. It's two bands, right? What does it mean?"
Scott shrugged. "I don't know. It's just something I traced with my fingers." "Why is this so important to you?" Derek asked.
"Do you know what the word 'tattoo' means?" Scott asked, looking down at his arm. "To mark something." Will said, remembering what the tattoo artist had said the night before. Scott sighed, shaking his head. "Well, that's in tahitian. In samoan, it means "open wound." I knew I wanted to get a tattoo when I turned 18. I always wanted one. I just decided to get it now... to make it kind of a reward."
"For what?" Stephanie asked and Scott bit his lip sadly. "For not calling or texting Allison all summer. Even when I really wanted to, even when it was so hard not to sometimes. I was trying to give her the space she wants. Goin' four months later, it still hurts. It still feels like a, uh..." "Like an open wound." Stiles finished for him, Scott nodding. "Yeah."
Derek sighed, grabbing a blowtorch. "The pain's gonna be worse than anything you've ever felt." Stiles groaned, running a hand down his face. "Ah, that's great." Derek turned on the blowtorch, Stiles letting out a small gasp. "Oh, wow. That's a... that's a lot for me." Will sighed, turning to him. "Are you gonna faint again." Stiles shook his head. "No, It's okay, I'm just gonna take that as my cue. I'm just gonna wait outside."
Just before Stiles could make it out of the room, Derek grabbed his arm, stopping him. "Nope. You can help hold him down. You too." Derek said, turning to Will. Derek sighed, inching the blowtorch closer and closer to Scotts arm before stopping, turning off the it and turning to Stephanie. "You know what? You do it."
Stephanie's eyes widened. "Excuse me?" "You need the practice. So... make a fire in your hands and burn Scott's arm."
Stephanie turned to Scott who nodded his head. "You need the practice." Stephanie sighed, she opened her palm and a flame immediately surrounded her hand. She turned to Derek and nodded.
Derek grabbed Stephanie's wrist, being careful not to burn himself and led her hand right over Scott's arm.
Scott screamed in pain, trying to shake himself out of Will and Stiles' grasp. "Hold him!" Derek screamed to the boys before turning to Stephanie. "Make the fire hotter."
Stephanie bit her lip, imagining the fire in her hand heating up and Scott's screams grew louder until he finally passed out. "Stop!" Derek screamed, making Stephanie rip her hand away from Scott's arm and slowly, the two bands on his arm slowly started to appear.
Stephanie let out a breathy laugh as Derek patted her shoulder. "Nice work." Stephanie sent him a small smile, before turning back to Scott, hearing him start to wake up.
Scott looked down at his arm as soon as his eyes opened, immediately smiling at the tattoo. "It worked." Scott breathed out as Stiles helped him up, sighing at the arm. "Well, it looks pretty damn permanent now." He mumbled
Scott chuckled, nodding his head. "Yeah. I kind of needed something permanent. Everything that's happened to us... everything just changes so fast. Everything's so, uh... Ephemeral." Stephanie scrunched her face at the big word as Will frowned slightly.
"Studying for the PSATs?" Will asked and Scott pulled his lips into a line, nodding. "Yep." "Nice." Will breathed out, patting Scott shoulder.
Scott chuckled before his eyes drifted to the front door of the Hale house, slowly walking towards it. "You painted the door. Why'd you paint the door?l
Derek immediately started walking towards them as Scott stared at the door. "Go home, Scott."
"And why only one side?" Scott mumbled. Before Derek could answer his question, he instantly started clawing the paint away until a whole symbol showed up on the door.
Stephanie swallowed the lump in her throat, remembering how Isaac told her about the Alpha Pack symbol on the door as Scott slowly turned to Derek. "The birds at school and the deer last night... just like the night I got trampled by the deer when I got bit by the Alpha. How many are there?"
"A pack of them." Derek whispered, making all of them turn to him. "An Alpha pack." Will's jaw dropped at Derek's words. "All of them? How does that even work?"
Derek shrugged, slightly shaking his head. "I hear there's some kind of a leader. He's called Deucalion. We know they have Boyd and Erica. Peter, Isaac, and I have been looking for him for the last four months."
"Let's say you find them. How do you deal with an Alpha pack?" Stephanie asked slowly and Derek turned to her with a determined look. "With all the help I can get."
"Where is she? Where's the girl?"
Everyones heads whipped to Isaac who was sitting up from his spot. Stiles sucked a breath playfully, leaning towards Stephanie. "Oh, there's another woman." Stephanie craned her head to Stiles, giving him a glare and whacking the back of his head, making him immediately back away. "Not the time right now? Got it."
Derek rolled his eyes at the two, turning to Isaac. "What girl?"
