Annabeth Chase leaned against the railing of the Argo II, eyes closed, enjoying the momentary peace. She relished in the feeling of nothing.
When she closed her eyes, she could almost imagine a life with no wars, gods or monsters. One where she could be a care-free teenager, still oblivious to the horrors of the real world. But when she opened her eyes, she was still standing on the deck of a bronze war ship sailing straight for bloody battles, misery and despair. And yet- as much as she cursed the gods, Annabeth Chase had accepted long ago the cruel fate she was handed. She had already given up the hope of a normal life.
Her eyes, now open, were met with a pair of sea green ones.
Now, Annabeth had always loved the look of Percy's eyes at night. The moonlight illuminated their golden flecks and the blue hues of his eyes became more prominent, making them alternate deep shades of blue and green; like the swirling sea. But now as green met grey, both tired and broken, concealing unshed tears, she saw how much Percy's eyes resembled a cracked mirror. She saw how haunted and scared he was, previous deaths and battles reeling through his brain.
It was the look of a soldier; one that shouldn't be harboured in the eyes of a teenager.
Perseus Jackson looked terrified, and broken beyond repair.
It was at that moment, Annabeth realized something. Although they had both changed and showered after their recent trip to Tartarus, ambrosia healing most of their injuries, she realized the lasting effects of war were mental rather than physical.
She longed to be that twelve year old girl again, the one hoping for adventure. She wanted her seaweed brain of a boyfriend back. She wanted the ten year old mythomagic dork back. She wanted the burdened crew of the Argo II to be happy. She wanted to be happy.
But as she looked at all the pain held in Percy's eyes, the effects of war weighing down on this 17-year old boy; a burden greater than Atlas's, she realized that some scars never heal.
And with that they sailed to Greece, the huntress shining in the sky, Bobs sacrifice still fresh in her mind.
Sorry, this is so short. I've been having major writers block. Anyway, I'm now on break so hopefully that means more updates! This one-shot isn't my best, I know. It's kinda all over the place. I guess its okay, for being the product of a sleep-deprived girl writing at 3 AM. Merry (almost) Christmas and Happy Hanukah!
