Chapter Fourteen

                                    

                                          
I sat in the quinjet, readying myself for the mission ahead. Scope out the place and, if it was a HYDRA base, shut it down. 
                          
I took a deep breath. This was another reason why I wanted to be an Avenger. To be on the opposite side of that monstrosity. To take them down.
                          
But I was also scared. So, so scared. This was where everything happened to me. This is where my journey began.
                          
I felt a nudge and turned to see Steve looking at me with concern in his eyes.
                          
"Are you okay?" he asked, looking me up and down.
                          
"Yes. No. I don't know." I sighed and scrubbed my face. "It's just... this is where it all happened."
                          
Steve nodded and placed his hand on mine. My heart started beating faster than it should.
                          
"If you don't want to do this, we'll all understand," he said.
                          
Everyone looked at me and nodded.
                          
"If you think for one second that you're going to leave me behind, you can jump out of this plane," I said.
                          
"Don't say that. He will," Bucky said, glaring at Steve.
                          
Steve just chuckled nervously. The team collectively sighed and rolled their eyes, used to his antics.
                          
"We're closing in," Clint said from the cockpit. 
                          
"Alright," Steve began, shifting into captain mode, "Tony, scope it out with the x-rays and whatever other science-y stuff you do."
                          
Tony pretended to be offended, placing a hand over his heart.
                          
"Sam, you're aerial. Everyone else wait until we get the signal. Then we go in and take them down," Steve finished.
                          
Tony and Sam jumped out of the jet and flew ahead while Clint landed. 
                          
"Yep, this is definitely it," Tony said through the comms. "Wow, that's a lot of energy. They've got... holy sh-"
                          
"Language!" Steve sighed.
                          
I looked at him quizzically. He just shook his head.
                          
"Old habits," he muttered.
                          
"After Steve and y/n stop giving each other lovey-dovey eyes, which, I am sure they're doing, we need your help," Tony said.
                          
I cleared my throat and blushed. Steve did the same and commanded everyone out.
                          
We got to the barn. Tony was floating out the front of it. As soon as we came into view, he flipped his helmet off. 
                          
"This place has some serious heat temperatures," he said as greeting.
                          
"Well, let's get started," I said.
                          
I walked past him and reached into my pockets.
                          
Tony had given me hunks of metal that I could use to help myself during battle. I had compacted them into small spheres so that I could carry more on me. I was also given a gun, just in case.
                          
I pulled most of the orbs together to create a massive globe. I smashed it through the side of the wooden barn, creating a hole big enough for the Hulk to fit through, if we needed a code green. 
                          
I then separated the metal and made it small again, placing the spheres in my pocket once more.
                          
"Show off," Bucky muttered.
                          
I just smirked, striding towards the entrance. Steve stopped me. I looked at him with the 'what?' face.
                          
"I'll go in first and make sure there's no danger," he said confidently. 
                          
I just snorted and strode ahead of him. 
                          
"Y/n," Steve said sharply. "You need to listen to me. We're a team, and if we don't work together, we won't work at all."
                          
"Well, your order was stupid. I am perfectly capable of taking care of myself and the rest of this team," I said, taking the gun out of it's holster and shooting a HYDRA agent that was sneaking up on us.
                          
Everyone froze, staring at the body of the agent.
                          
"Let's go," I said coldly.
                          
We entered the barn, scanning everywhere.
                          
"There," I said, pointing to a place on the wooden floor. "There's a metal ladder. I can feel it."
                          
Steve went over and found a handle. He lifted up the trapdoor and gestured everyone forwards. 
                          
"We need someone to be able to go down and cover our backs," Steve said.
                          
"I've got it," Tony declared.
                          
He headed to the trap door and jumped down, his arc reactor glowing in the dark.
                          
"I will go next," Vision said.
                          
He proceeded to float down the hole.
                          
"Oh yeah, there are bad guys down here," Tony said through the comms.
                          
Wanda jumped down next, using her power to break her fall. Everyone went down until I was the last one left.
                          
You've got this, y/n, I thought. You've got this.
                          
So I jumped down and into the belly of the beast.
