My phone rang from someone trying to face time me. I checked the caller ID and saw that it was Stella. I groaned, I didn't really have the patience for her energy right now.

I decided to pick up anyway.

"And it looks like we got her everybody!" Stella cheered. I rolled my eyes, I assumed she was doing a live stream.

"What's up Stella?" My voice was grumbly, unintentionally, I was just exhausted.

"I didn't know what to do with my live stream so I called you." Even though I didn't want to deal with her, the cheerfulness in her voice may or may not have made the day a little better.

"You see, Nola is a fellow CF-er so we have to remain six feet apart at all times from each other. She also transferred to this hospital a few weeks ago. She's the only other female cf case here so I finally get to have some girl talk."

I coughed. "Oh yeah, we bond over having to cough up mucus every day".

Stella laughed. At least she's happy.

I let her babble on for a little while longer, interjecting occasionally, but only when I felt the impulse to. Stella is, and for the few weeks I've known her, a very sociable person, which is completely fine, but it's just not my style.

"Why don't you just call Poe for this?" I asked when she ended the stream.

"He's more entertaining," I added.

"I just like talking to you." She shrugged.

"You barely know me."

"That's the point, we talk so I can get to know who you are better."

I sighed, she got me there.

It's just when you know for a fact, that you could die any day from choking to death on your own mucus, you don't really tend to get close to people, especially if they're dying too. I'm just saying, why set yourself, or others up for pain when you could just avoid it by not getting close enough to feel that pain. Relationships take a lot of energy anyway, the energy that I don't have. Sure, Stella is really cool, and she keeps me on top of my regimen, but she's not really my best friend.

"Make sure to take your next rounds of meds, and see you later?"

"Sure thing."

"Okay, bye Nola!"

"Bye." I hung up the face time.

I grabbed my box of pills and my water from breakfast. I put some water in my mouth, put the pills in, more water, then swallowed. Gosh, after 17 years of taking pills you'd think I'd be better at it, but I still hate it.

I laid back down on my bed and stared out the window. I'd decorated some of it with pictures and chalk marker drawings in on it. One thing CF kids have an abundance of is more or less boredom. You learn to keep yourself busy by picking up hobbies when you're in and out of the hospital, with visits that are rarely less than a few weeks long.

I draw on paper and paint, but a few years ago I took to using chalk markers on windows. The view from a hospital window is nothing much, more commonly depressing than beautiful. I might as well make it more enjoyable.

I got up, my room was driving me insane. This hospital is pretty fancy compared to the ones I've been in before. It has a pool, a huge dining area, a gym, a meditation room, or something like that. I'm not really sure, it's Stella's thing.

I put my plain black mask over my mouth, just in case. I grabbed my air machine thing and opened the door.

"Hey Nola, how are you feeling today?"The nurse, Julie asked.

I shrugged. "I'm alive and breathing, doesn't get much better than that now does it?"

She looked sad for a second but then smiled.

"Yeah, you're right."

"How's the baby?" I asked her.

"Oh all good today, no weird cravings or anything." She laughed.

I waved as I continued walking down the hallway. I would probably just go sit on a couch somewhere in the hospital, and get bored and walk around some more, who knows, maybe I'd even walk around the hospital twice.

Time Skip

By the time I decided to go back to my room, the sun was almost set, and hopefully, dinner would be served soon. I couldn't wait to drink 5,000 calories through my g-tube. Note the sarcasm.

I saw Stella leaving her room. Probably headed to go see the babies or something like that.

"Hey, Nola!"She waved a gloved hand at me.

I waved back at her.

She stopped in front of a door to a room. Creepy much?
