Harry's POV
"Jeff, I can't. Natalie has another scan today."
"I'm sorry Haz, but we need you here for this one."
I can't help but sigh loudly, not caring that Jeff will hear through the phone. Nat's sitting up in bed next to me, staring at me as I talk to Jeff, her jaw clenched.
"Why? What's so important about this meeting?" I ask, hearing and ignoring the petulant tone in my voice.
"We've got multiple venues needing a final answer by today, Haz. We've been putting it off long enough, but we need to lock them down and finalise details or we're going to lose them."
I sigh again as I run my hand through my hair.
"Okay, fine."
Natalie narrows her eyes at me and my stomach clenches.
"Sorry mate."
"No, it's fine. I'll see you at ten."
I hang up quickly and shove my phone back on the nightstand, rubbing my face with my hands.
"So?"
I turn to look at her again, hating the way her brow furrows at me. I hate letting her down.
"Jeff needs me for a meeting at ten." I say simply.
I reach out to take her hand, but she moves it to her leg stubbornly. I freeze momentarily before trying to play it off, ignoring the pain of being rejected.
"My scan's at eleven." She says unnecessarily.
"I know, Angel, I'm going to have to miss it."
She doesn't say anything else, and I just watch as she lifts herself off the bed and disappears into the bathroom. I squeeze my eyes shut, wishing that this morning would play out a little differently.
I've been dealing pretty well with Natalie in her pregnant state, if I do say so myself. She's been emotional more than anything, but she lets me take care of her when she's feeling sad, so I don't mind.
This week has been different though. She's been flicking through emotions like a flip book during the day, and I'm struggling to keep up. It's mid January, so she has less than two months to go, but it's killing me that I'm not able to keep her happy.
She blatantly ignores me when she gets out the bathroom, getting dressed slowly in her pregnant state and leaving the room without a word. I spring out of bed and get dressed as quickly as possible. I don't want to have to leave before she's happy.
"Nat, I'm sorry." I say as I make it downstairs, noting that she's still made me breakfast despite being mad at me.
"Angel, talk to me."
She doesn't say anything, even as I sit down opposite her.
"There'll be other scans." I say weakly, regretting my words as her eyes flash dangerously, making my stomach drop.
"There'll be other scans?" She repeats back to me, her voice strangely sharp. "Sorry, didn't realise that you didn't care about our child, Harry."
I feel whiplashed by her words, not expecting her to say anything like that. Part of me wants to laugh, it's so ridiculous, but the look on her face makes it obvious she's hurting, and making light of the situation isn't going to help.
"Angel, you know I care. I want to be there, I really do, I just don't have a choice. Can you postpone the scan?"
"Will you ask me to postpone going into labour if you're busy that day?" She asks bitterly, and I bite my tongue to stop from sighing.
