He turned around to face Yoongi, holding his bag that was on his shoulder. "Where are we going?"
Yoongi was looking out to the road and at all the buildings and other scenery with it. He hadn't looked away when Namjoon asked his question. "I was thinking the park. It would be nice to enjoy the final days of spring while they're still here."
"I couldn't agree more. Let's go."
Over the time they talked, Namjoon learned that Yoongi had a fondness for nature. That helped Namjoon open his eyes a bit wider to realize how green the leaves can really turn, how bright the sun truly shines, and how beautiful the birds' morning songs could be. Finally realizing all these things, Namjoon understood why Yoongi had plants all around his apartment and why the curtains would never close the view out the windows. It wasn't for decor, it was because that's what made Yoongi happy. And in the end, that's all he really cared about.
When they got to the park, both boys relished in the beauty of all Namjoon learned about. This was happiness Yoongi couldn't hide, and unexpectedly, he carefully held Namjoon's hand. The younger looked at him in confusion, but Yoongi didn't look back.
The older led him down one of the paths, pointing out small things to Namjoon such as a leaf that wasn't yet green or a birds nest on one of the branches. To both of them, those details weren't small. They were the biggest in the world. All because Yoongi was the one pointing them out.
They stopped by a bench. Neither of them took a seat. Instead they stared at each other. The two saw care in each other's eyes, before Namjoon brought up a goofy grin.
"Hyung~ I know you want to ask me something." Namjoon shook Yoongi's shoulder as he teasingly whined, "Tell me!"
Yoongi replied by faking a shocked expression. Even taking a step back and placing a hand on his heart to admit more drama. "Why are you outing me like so, Bear?"
He broke his act when he heard Namjoon laugh. Yoongi grinned, and something seemed to flicker in his eyes. For once, Namjoon decided to push that detail aside.
"No. But seriously. Tell me."
Yoongi sighed and slid his bag down one side of his arm. He placed it on the bench next to them and took a seat. Namjoon did the same.
Then, he opened it and pulled out a brown, cardboard box. After zipping the bag with his empty hand, Yoongi handed it to Namjoon, who was looking at it with wide eyes.
He held the box with one hand and then the other until it was out of Yoongi's hands. The box wasn't too heavy, neither was it light. Yoongi had his eyes only on the box. Namjoon took it as a way to say he should open it.
Namjoon opened the lid and looked inside. There was an object in there, but it was covered in bubble wrap. He was able to unravel it. The sounds got Yoongi out of his daydream.
When Namjoon uncovered the object and held it in his hands, he felt an emotion that he couldn't describe.
In his hands, was the black swan statue he saw at Yoongi's apartment. Colder than he expected it to be.
He looked back up at Yoongi, who was unreadable, but didn't look upset. He seemed to be lost in his thoughts once again, but that's all Namjoon could figure out.
"Hyung? Why are you giving me this?"
Through his calm appearance, there was still an anxious feeling in Yoongi's chest. Butterflies fluttering around and a heart that was pulled down with them. He tried to build up enough courage to speak fluently, and was surprised when he gave the reply, "Do you know what black swans symbolize?"
Namjoon nodded and looked back down at the swan, moving it around in his hands to catch more details. "An unexpected but significant event, right?"
Yoongi hummed and leaned over to rub the top of the swan's head with his thumb. "Do you know what else it could mean?"
Namjoon tilted his head. He didn't know that there was more to a black swan than that. He knew that the event could be either good or bad, depending on whether the swan itself is good or bad. The rest was something he either didn't take much research on or that went over his head.
Yoongi took a deep breath. "...It could also mean compassion and love."
After hearing that, Namjoon was able to figure out what the swan was actually supposed to mean on his own. It wasn't a gift to represent having support or always being there for the other person. It was a confession that he wanted to always be there for him. Not as friends. As something more in the heart than only in memories.
"Hyung?"
Yoongi looked up at him. There was a shine in his eyes from a thin layer of tears. "I love you, Bear. You may not feel the same way, and if that's the case, then let this black swan represent our," He took a breath, "friendship rather than my feelings."
Namjoon looked down at the swan once again. This time, he didn't look down at the swan thinking of it as a statue. He looked at it as all the emotions they felt hidden underneath black feathers. White was the only one they could see, but they knew the perfection and love that was truly in its heart. Not its appearance.
"I want it to mean both of those things."
Yoongi flinched. "What?"
"I want it to mean our story."
Yoongi tilted his head to avert his eyes onto the ground. He took that time to think until his head snapped back at Namjoon's face. "Wait. Does that mean...?"
"I don't know if I share the same feelings as you." Namjoon began, placing the swan back in the box. "I do know that if I were to call you a friend, the word would be hollow now that I know that there's something bigger we can become. And I want that because you want it too."
A wave of emotions went through Yoongi's chest that crashed the butterflies that used to be there. He grabbed his bag and placed it on the ground next to his feet. When he scooted towards Namjoon on the bench, he placed his hand on top of the younger's, which was on his thigh. Soon after, their fingers intertwined. Though it was the same action as the one before, the context made it feel like the first time it ever happened.
"Thank you, Bear."
Namjoon removed his hand from Yoongi's and grabbed the swan. He placed it in the older's palm before placing his own hand on top.
"Anything for you, hyung."
During the evening back in his dorm, Namjoon placed the black swan on his desk. He opened a drawer and grabbed a picture that he and Yoongi took a while back. Then he placed it in front of the swan.
He cut out a piece of paper and placed it next to the picture, the words on it saying:
"In the heart of the Black Swan,
There was love, all along."🌳🌳
