Germany (Ludwig Beilschmidt) x Reader

The hustle and bustle of students helped keep Ludwig calm as he headed to his third class of the day. He had just finished having lunch with his close friend Kiku and was mentally and physically prepared for the final class of the day. He surveyed his surroundings during the walk to find his gaze land on the sight of his brother with a bright smile on his face as he conversed with (Y/N). She, in turn, appeared to be enjoying her time with Gil and sported a smile similar to his. Ludwig looked away in an effort to ignore the clear sign of....something the two were both trying to deny. His chest felt constricted and he focused on the rhythm of his breathing to distract himself from his thoughts. "Ludwig!" (Y/N) called out and he turned to watch her as she ran to catch up to him "Let's walk to class together." He smiled down at her and intertwined their fingers together.

She squeezed his hand in response and the little action planted a seed of hope within his chest. Simple moments like this would remind him of the start of their relationship four years ago. The two had begun dating in the tenth grade and maintained a strong relationship for three years until things began to slowly crumble in the fourth year. (Y/N) tugged his arm in the direction of the class and effectively took him out of his negative thoughts. She sent him a playful smile "Lud are you losing your memory already? Do you need me to guide you everywhere?" He let out a small laugh as he tightened his grip on her hand in affection "I was just lost in my thoughts." They arrived at their shared class and she immediately released his hand to rush over to her favourite seat.

A cold sensation walked over him as he made his way through the aisles to take a seat next to her. The teacher entered the room a moment later and began the lecture. Ludwig cast a quick glance in her direction. She looked bored with a hint of confusion present on her face. She stared at her notebook for a few seconds before turning to meet his blue eyes. Ludwig blinked at the sudden eye contact and shifted in his seat. "Ludwig" she whispered, glancing at her surroundings to ensure no one was listening "I need to talk to you after." Her tone of voice made him uneasy and an unsettling feeling settled itself inside his chest. He gulped away his nerves and whispered out a low, somewhat dejected "Okay." He managed to force himself to focus on the professor's voice and the notes on the screen for the next two hours. When the professor had called the end of the class, fear and anxiety began to consume his mind.

He hadn't felt these emotions since he had confessed to (Y/N). She gathered her items and slung her knapsack onto her back "Ready to go?" (Y/N) had said the words with an easy tone, but Ludwig could pick up the slight nervous energy to them. He nodded silently. He wasn't sure he could form words at the moment. He knew what was coming. He had known for a year that it would happen and he didn't know how to prevent it. (Y/N) stopped walking and took a seat underneath a tree. She beckoned for him to come over, but it didn't have the same energy it usually did. He took a seat next to her and (Y/N) stared thoughtfully at her hands before looking up once again to meet his eyes. He felt vulnerable in that moment and he steeled his expression in preparation for what was to come.

A pair of students walked by them, hand in hand, and (Y/N) waited for them to pass to allow them silence. "Lud, I love you" she began, and he tried to not let the words affect him because he knew it wasn't the end. She looked away from him in a moment of hesitation "I..." (Y/N) took a deep breath to calm herself down "I love you so much that I can't keep doing this." He was expecting the words, but that didn't stop it from hurting just as much. He blinked away the beginning of tears and she paused when she saw the hurt expression he tried so desperately to hide.

She swallowed her feelings "When we started dating four years ago, I loved you. I still love you, but it's different now. I love you as a friend. I have for half a year now and...I'm sorry. I don't want to continue this and hurt you more." She pushed away her tears. She didn't want to cry and act like the victim when she knew she was the bad person when she knew he was hurting more than her. Ludwig blinked away the tears threatening to return. He knew she was drifting away from him. He wanted to persuade her to come back, but he knew she wouldn't. He uttered the one word he was capable of saying "Okay."

Notes:

Prompt: Drift. The two of them are slowly drifting away from each other. Despite Ludwig's quite intense feelings, it's a mutual thing.

Gil likes her and she likes him, but they won't date for a long time

I hope you enjoyed this
