I walk into work on monday, knowing that I have a meeting with my boss. I'm nervous, but Romas has told me it isn't bad news, so that calms me down a little. I walk over to her office and knock on the door. "Emily, hello, how are you doing?" the older woman asks me. Her name is Catherine, and she's really sweet. "I'm good, what about you?" I ask. She replies, before motioning for me to sit down. "Ok, so how do you feel about your current position?" she asks me. "I love working here, but I think I'm ready for something more," I tell her honestly. "I was hoping you would say something along those lines. I have a job offer for you," She says. I wait for her to go on, and she smiles at me. "We just moved Sian over to another radio program, and we need someone to take over. I spoke with Roman, and he told me he thought you were the best alternative. You'll have work every weekday from five forty until one, and there will be a pay raise. We'll discuss the details if you say yes" she explains. I sit there considering it. "You can of course think about it, but we'll need an answer by the end of the week," She says. "No, or I mean yes, I'll take the job. I don't need to think about it," I tell her. "Really? That's great!" We spent a good hour discussing everything, and I signed a contract pretty quick. I spend the two last weeks of my current job getting everything I need done, and pack up my office, as I'll move into a shared office with Roman and Sonny. I don't see Niall at any point during these two weeks, which I get, considering he has work to do, but I still miss him.
The first week of October, I'm starting my new job. The first week ran by surprisingly smoothly. When the weekend arrives I'm exhausted because of my new routine. I get up at five, eat, get to work and stay there until one. Then I go to the bakery where Lily works for a quick catch up, before I take my run. It's starting to get rather cold outside, so I've switched to running inside the local training center. I'm laying on the couch on saturday when I hear a knock on my door. I walk over to open it, and squeal when I see Niall. I jump into his arms, giving him a hug. He says hi to me and I mumble a soft hi into his neck. "I've missed you, Ems," he says. "I missed you too, where did you go? You didn't call either," I ask him, and pull away so that he can come into my flat. He grabs a guitar from the ground, that I didn't spot at first, then he walks in. "I'm sorry, I was busy. You could have called me as well," he tells me. "I know, but with my new job and everything I was busy as well," I tell him. "Aw, that's right, congrats about that, Love," He tells me and kisses my cheek. "Thank you. Now, what do I owe the pleasure of your company today?" I ask him. "I wanted to hang out with you," he says. "That's nice," I tell him. "I came here to talk with you about something as well," he says, and sits down on the couch. I sit down with him. "About what?" I ask him. "Well, I- these kinds of conversations are hard," he says. I take his hand, to tell him that it's fine. "Ok, so I want to play you this song first, if that's okay," he says. "Yea, sure," I tell him. "I wrote it when we were in the Bahamas," he says and I nod at him. He started playing a few tunes on his guitar before he started to sing.
Waiting here for someone
Only yesterday we were on the run
You smile back at me and your face lit up the sun
Now I'm waiting here for someone
I sit quiet, waiting for him to continue.
And oh, love, do you feel this rough?
Why's it only you I'm thinking of
A small smile appeared on his lips, before he continued the lines he had on his mind. He sings the chorus, and another verse, before he gets my attention with a line.
And oh, love, watch the sun coming up
Don't it feel fucked up we're not in love
I immediately think about the morning on the cliff and when I see the look he sends me I get that he's thinking of the same thing. He finished up the song and put his guitar down. "It's good," I tell him. "But it's not true. Or not the whole song at least," he says. "What do you mean?" I ask. "Well, the only part of the lyric that's a total lie is the one where it says Don't it feel fucked up we're not in love. Or it's not a lie that it would be fucked up, the lie is that I'm not in love." He says, and I meet his eyes. "I'm not catching on, Ni," I tell him. He stays quiet, and looks down. "I told you we could take it slow. I've waited for you as well, but I can't do it anymore. Pretend just to be your friend when I see you. You're messing with my head, making me all confused. You give me hope that we can be more. Still, every time something we take a step forward, it's like you take two steps back." I look at him in shock. "Niall, I had no idea you were feeling this way, I-" he cuts me off. "I just want an answer, Em. If you think we can be anything more, then I'll wait. I just won't wait for something that's not going to happen." He's not angry, just frustrated. I stare down at my hands. "I'm going to be honest with you. I don't know. There is definitely something here," I say and gesture between us, before I continue; "I just don't know what to make of it. I'm confused, Niall. It hasn't even been a year since I broke things off with Cristopher, I don't feel ready." He looks at me. "Emily, I told you, I will wait if I know that it will bring something," he says, and takes my hand. "I'm falling for you, Em, hard," he continues. I push some hair away from my face, and look at him. "I'm falling for you as well," I hear myself say, before I can think it through. A smile spreads across his face, and he pulls me into a hug. "I need some more time though, before I'm ready to go ahead with it," I tell him, into his chest. "I know, Love, I know," he says. We fall back on the coach, my head still on his chest. I lay there, listening to his steady heartbeat for what seems like hours, while in reality it's probably about ten minutes before I fall asleep.
