"We really have to stop running into each other like this."
Logan scowled, what was Zoe still doing here?
"What did I say about questioning her in my absence?" He asked coldly.
She raised her hands in mock surrender. "Easy there, tiger. I haven't been to your lady's room yet," she said in defensive.
Logan's face changed when he spotted his archenemy strolling towards them, dressed in a bloody shirt.
"Parker," Kyle greeted with a firm nod, his hands buried deep in his pants pockets.
"Kyle, what are doing here?"
Kyle Davids raised an eyebrow at him and looked around in awareness. "Last time I checked, this was a public hospital."
Logan snorted. "Exactly," he spat, and Kyle tensed. "Are your finances that bad?"
Kyle laughed humourlessly and sucked his teeth. "You just had to go there, didn't you? Is everything about money to you?" His eyes were slightly different, redder from exhaustion. His shoulders slumbed as he exhaled and rubbed his eyes. "You haven't heard, have you?" He asked.
Logan shrugged. "Heard what, are you dying?"
"Logan," Zoe warned.
"What? There's nothing wrong if he's dying," he said nonchalantly. "I can live with that."
"Your best friend is in there fighting for his life, and you don't care?" A hoarse voice asked.
Logan spun around, almost spilling the coffee in his hands as he came face to face with Shannon Botha. She looked terrible, she was wearing grey sweatpants and a green tee shirt which was covered in blood, and there was dried blood on the side of her face and hair.
"Shay, what happened to you?" He asked. There was no way that was her blood, she didn't have any plasters, and it could not be David's or Lola's blood either. Logan frowned and turned to face Zoe and Kyle. "What's going on here?"
Zoe rolled her eyes and crossed her arms. "Jorge was shot at his beach house, Shannon and Kyle found him yesterday," she explained.
Logan turned to Kyle as if looking for confirmation. "Jorge is our family lawyer, he landed two nights ago and was supposed to help with the divorce proceedings, we had a meeting yesterday at 12p.m., but he never showed up and he wasn't answering his phone. We found him laying in a pool of blood last night," Kyle elaborated.
What was Shannon doing there? As if reading his mind, the girl spoke up. "I was jogging."
The coffee in his hands suddenly felt cold, and he felt lightheaded. "Uhm...do you have any updates on his condition yet?" They all shook their heads. "And Caroline, is she in there? Zoe, do you have any information on the shooter?" He asked dreadfully.
"Unfortunately, no. He's been in surgery since last night, and we have nothing on the shooter yet. We have recordings from his CCTV, but it's encrypted and the password changes every minute." Zoe turned to Shannon. "I have to get back to the station and see how everything is going so long. Shay, I'll drop you off at home, you need to shower and eat." The girl nodded, and the sisters said their goodbyes before they left, leaving Logan and Kyle in awkward silence.
Logan would never admit it to anyone, but he missed the old days where the three of them were still friends, they were inseparable, but then Kyle screwed up. "What are you doing here?" Logan asked sourly.
Kyle scoffed. "Until now, I was the only person Jorge had since his shooting. And you, the best friend, were nowhere to be found. Whether you like it or not, Jorge is my friend too."
"Friend? What kind of friend hits on his friend's girlfriend?"
"That's very rich coming from you," Kyle bit off, and Logan tensed. "You are out here acting like a saint while you've been screwing your friend's wife for years now. You know, I'm surprised that none of that bitch's kids are yours." Logan went mum, his jaw ticking. "I know I messed up, but at least I owned up to it. You on the other hand, every time David comes crying to you about his wife's cheating ways, you imagine all the ways you are going to fuck her later, and do it behind his back anyway," he spat and then walked past Logan, but not without bumping shoulders and taking one of the coffees.
Logan closed his eyes and breathed in and out, he cursed at himself for being so reckless. And all this had to come out after he broke things off with Lola, worst of all, to his archenemy and former best friend, Kyle Davids.
He shook his head and rushed down the hallway to Caroline's office, but she was not there, her office was vacant and everything that belonged to her was gone.
What's going on? He wondered as he walked towards Antonina's private room.
"You took your own sweet time, I can feel the coldness of that coffee from over here," the old lady said as soon as he entered her room.
She was sitting up against her pillow, wearing her glasses while reading a newspaper.
"I fucked up," he muttered as he placed the coffee and doughnuts on the nightstand.
She snorted as if she had been expecting him to say that. "Who did you punch this time?"
"No one." But he wished he had punched Kyle. "Tell me, has Caroline come to check up on you today?" He asked, remembering her empty office.
That got her attention, and she put down her paper and took off her glasses before looking at him directly for the first time since he arrived.
"You look like shit."
"Geez, thanks for finally noticing." She smiled at his comment and watched him as if waiting for him to crack, it made him uncomfortable. "Stop doing that." He looked away from her.
She sighed. "Okay. The last time I saw Caroline was last night when she came to say goodbye, she didn't look well."
Logan groaned and ran his hand up and down his head. "What's wrong? What happened? Does this have anything to do with Jorge?" She asked worriedly.
"How do you about that?"
She shrugged in response. "She was blabbing about how it was her fault, and now he was going to die because of her. She even refused to go and assist in theatre." Logan exhaled loudly and pinched the bridge of his nose. "Logan, what did you do?"
He stopped pacing around and looked at her. "Do you remember the night of the engagement party?"
She scoffed. "How could I ever forget?"
"Jorge slept with Caroline."
"Slept with Caroline as in like, making babies?"
He rolled his eyes at her. "Yes, Antonina, they were having sex."
"That's putting it mildly."
"You think? I didn't think things could get out of hand like this." He resumed his pacing, staring at the ceiling.
Antonina narrowed her eyes at him. "So, what did you do?" She asked the bigger question. "Jorge's condition is pretty serious, has anyone called his sister?"
Logan's eyes widened in horror and he shook his head. MJ could not know about this, if what he thought was true, she would kill him. "No, are you crazy? If MJ comes here, she's going to find out that I told Caroline's husband the truth..." He trailed off as he caught the proud glint in her eyes. "Damn you, woman!" He cursed.
She had tricked him and he fell for it. "I wonder if she knows she has so much power over you."
He sighed and plopped down on the chair in the corner of the room, and then buried his head in his hands.
This was such a mess, how was he supposed to deal with all this on his own? As if reading his thoughts, she said, "I'm with you all the way, you don't have to do this alone."
And he believed her, that was all the reassurance he needed to get out of this mess.
