Another set of arms reached for her, and she jumped away until she realized it was Nikolai. He was Red-faced and as broken as she was. As the battle ended, they clung to each other until Malicart told them it was time to ride north. Malicart tried to leave Amethyst behind, but it brought out a savage response in her. She had been in this from the start, and there was no way he was leaving her now.
Their small team road up to where the battle was happening. The grass was trodden, and there were the cries of men being cut down. The worst was all the crimson red glistening on the field. Nikolai and Malicart stopped the battle. Both sides collected in a hastily pitched tent on the hill where the war ended. All the advisors gathered for peace talks and a treaty. The men wanted Amethyst out, but Both Malicart and Nikolai knew that was not an option for Amethyst. They argued back and forth on what to include. They all know the most significant part was getting Vilencians off Medivian land. Malicart's advisors tried to get more land for recompense for the attack. Amethyst and Nikolai shot that down since it is the only fertile land in the nation. They spoke of trade and border protection until they couldn't even point to the border on a map. Then, finally, Nikolai spoke one last request.
"I think this agreement would stick better for both nations if it contained something more permanent holding it." He didn't suggest marriage out loud, but Malicart knew.
"Permanent, how?" Lord Northgate asked. He was the first lord to arrive as an advisor. All his suggestions implicitly wanted to cripple Violencia. He glared at and ignored Amethyst whenever she spoke. When she spoke in defense of Violencia, he tried to dismiss her words altogether.
"Something that may connect our kingdoms in peace," Nikolai said. He was staring across the table at Amethyst but was also entirely on his own, on a limb.
"a marriage tied to the agreement. Since you are unmarried, putting a medivian on the thrown next to you could work in our favor. What do you think, brother?" Amethyst said calmly.
"I can't say you are wrong. Let's add a marriage to the agreement. We can even get an official to get this done quickly." Malicart announced.
"Your Majesty," Lord Northgate hesitated. "Pray, tell me who the lady who will be married is. If I may, don't you think this may be a bit sudden to any woman you may choose."
"True, and of course, you are right. We should figure out who this lady should be before we get an official." Malicart, enjoying his role too much, turned to Nikolai. "We have many women to choose from, daughters of lords and advisors that could be suited to your needs. Do you have any ideas on who you would like to marry?"
"Would it be possible to marry your sister?" Nikolai asked Malicart but stared at Amethyst.
"My eldest sister is a rare beauty, but I am afraid she is already engaged. Could you settle for my younger sister? She is a fair swordsman, stubborn as an ox, and as it would seem near impossible to kill." Amethyst walked over and smacked her brother's arm.
"Majesty, your sister is lovely, but do you really think her up to the task." Lord Northgate pretended to whisper.
"She always knew she might marry for the realm, so she shall be fine, I dare say, with this."
The next day, they cleaned up as best they could for the wedding. Moving bodies away had not rained, so the blood on the field stayed. Amethyst was still in her servant's clothes since she didn't bring a spare gown to the battle. But they stood up to be married just the same. Amethyst adds that she promised to climb the mountain yearly on the solstice to her vows. Nikolai promised to build her a greenhouse in the castle. Then, they brought out the marriage agreement to sign. Malicart leaned down and whispered loud enough that Nikolai could still hear.
"Remember, your name is actually Mirabella." Amethyst choked on her laugh since she was about to mess that up.
"So when the maid called you Mirra when we first met, she used your real name?" Nikolai said as they stood together, "I feel so lied to..." Amethyst didn't let him chatter on but instead gave him something more fun to do.
For the first time in history, the Medivia, Violencia, and Bettlewood kingdoms were at peace. Because of those three siblings, the countries created alliances that would last as long as they existed on this earth. Even after, ask the people who still live on those ancient lands.
