Amethyst is a hard stone. It is translucent with a purple color. Purple is the royal color, and royals are supposed to be clear and hard. These are all the reasons that the royal family of Medivia chose to give their third child the middle name of Amethyst. King Malicart and his wife, Queen Isolt, had their eldest daughter first. Following tradition, her name, Princess Meghan Amelia of Medivia, was sent to all the towns of the land. She, of course, would never inherit the throne because of the unfortunate nature of her sex. So, a marriage was arranged almost immediately to the neighbors to the east, the kingdom of Bettlewood. A small nation with one of the best shipping ports. This marriage was to protect Bettlewood from attackers and lower tariffs on trade for Medivia to almost nothing.

The next child of the King and Queen was a boy, and the nation's people rejoiced. The heralds went to every town announcing the arrival of 'His Royal Highness Malicart Michael Mason Morgan, crown prince of Medivia.' Those two infants had already given Medivia so much. It was hard to imagine the contributions of any future child could have, but the third child was born anyway. She was given the name Mirabella Amethyst. The heralds somehow messed up the message to all the land, the name Princess Amethyst of Medivia. The people were still trying to figure out what to do. The kingdom had a long tradition that the royal family would bear the letter of the country. All children carried an M so that they were tied to it. The people applauded the King and Queen for their originality and willingness to change. When it came time to invite all the regents and local royals to the presentation, they decided to keep the mistake.

This was the first time the country to the north was invited to a Medivian royal engagement. Medivia waged war against Vilencia long ago. King Malicart was trying to heal the two countries, but as was expected the King of Vilencia did not come. He did send a gift for the little princess. Vilencia's most considerable trade is metals and gems. Hence, the King sent a small amethyst stone for her to remember her namesake. That stone was placed on an ornate chain fit for a Princess. At age 5, she received it, and it instantly became her favorite piece.

The three children grew in their own ways. The eldest, Meghan, grew in poise and grace, learning many languages and how to be a good host and wife. She spent her summers away in Bettlewood getting to know her future husband. The second child, Malicart, spent his time learning languages and international relations. He also dedicated his time to fighting and war strategies. The final child was a question. She was not as well known to the people and was elusive at best at any public engagement. Most people only recognize her by her Amethyst necklace. If someone was looking for her, they would be directed to the gardens. She would be tending the flowers or practicing swordplay with her brother or father there.

This is precisely where Meghan found her on a sunny afternoon sparing with her brother. The swords clashed, making piercing, unmistakable sounds. When Meghan walked closer to the arena, she saw the two. Her brother dripped with sweat from his every poor, his hair slicked back with the effort of holding off his sister's attacks. More than likely, he would tell you it was the heat. Meghan also saw her sister Amethyst covered in sweat and dressed in men's clothes, which were inappropriate for a girl her age. Her hair was pulled back in a long servant's braid. Amethyst favors this style. It is simple and versatile, But it was hardly reasonable for a girl of her station.Meghan walked up to them quietly, waiting for their attention instead of demanding it. Both girls were taught that a lady is patient and quietly collects a man's attention. Malicart noticed her first calling off the practice.

"I've never known you to be a quitter, brother," Amethyst said, laying down her sword.

"I'm not giving up; I'm simply delaying your defeat by giving our sister my attention." He winked at her, acknowledging her outrage. "to what do we owe the surprise sister?" Malicart changed direction to address his older sister.
