I oftentimes find myself in situations that could have been completely avoided if I just kept my mouth shut and minded my own business.
Like today.
"Let's eat outside," Chanel suggests after we get our lunch. It was a nice day outside so our group—minus Nikole—agreed. We all headed out to the quad where it seemed like most of the student body had the same idea we had. One boy was chasing another with a burrito, and they almost knocked me over.
"Excuse you! This isn't a playground!" I yell after them.
Trevor shakes his head. "Freshman."
"Wasn't that you freshman year?" Ivy raises a brow.
"Uh no, I never chased another dude around with a burrito. That's just weird."
We pick a shady spot underneath a tree to sit. As I unwrap my cupcake I hear a loud clap followed by a shout.
"Ready? Okay! We're sunny, we're cute, and we've got style to boot! We're vicious, we're loud, you can never put us down because we're sharks, oh yeah! The Malibu Sharks! I said M-A-L-I-B-U bloodthirsty Sharks! Don't mess with us we'll tear you up, Malibu Sharks!"
Britney leads the cheer team in a chant on the grass. I spot Nikole among them, her head held high and her voice sure and confident as she pumped her fist in the air. It was Wednesday, the day of cheer team tryouts. There were a bunch of girls there, watching in either awe, fear, or a mixture of both.
Ivy shakes her head. "I can't believe cheerleading is an actual sport."
Chanel pops a chip into her mouth. "What do you mean?" She asks while chewing.
"I mean it's just so degrading. The stereotype that you have to be small, skinny, and cute, the cattiness, wearing tiny skirts and being overly sexualized."
Trevor shrugs. "I mean to each their own right?"
"I think cheerleading has evolved and become more diverse," I say. "You only see that stupid cliche stuff in the movies."
"What do you think Ryan?" Chanel asks. He looks up from his phone.
"Huh?"
"What do you think about cheerleading?" Chanel elaborates.
