Grace's POV:
The next day at school Julie and I are walking through the hallway and Julie is jamming out to the music in her headphones. I smile. It's good to see her like this again. We've both been missing music this past year and the boys have helped bring that back.
When we get to our lockers Flynn walks up to us. She takes a second and just smiles at us. "What?" I ask. "Nothing, it's just good to see you back to your weirdo selves." She says. "Thanks?" Julie says, well more like questions.
"So, how's the band? Still hot? Still talented? Still dead?" She asks. I laugh. "They're great. Actually, Luke and I spend the entire weekend working on songs together. They turned out amazing. Do you want to hear some of them?" I ask. "Duh." She says.
I laugh and the three of us head to the music room. When we get there I take my position behind the piano. "The lyrics were flowing through me like when I used to write with mom." I say, grinning. I open the piano and place my hands on the keys.
"This is the first song Luke and I wrote. Here's a bit of the chorus." I say. I play few keys.
Grace
'Cause we're standing on the edge of great!
Great!
Great!
Flynn smiles. "Wow! I like it! Definite Gaga vibes." She says. Julie and I laugh. "Play the next one." Julie tells me. "Now, I think we have a real anthem with this one. It's something my mom and I were working on. Luke and I finished it. Check it out." I say. I start playing.
Grace
And it's one, two, three, four times
That I've tried for one more night
Light a fire in my eyes
I'm going out of my mindI stop playing. "That's...that's beautiful." She tells me. I grin at her. She then turns to Julie. "And our girl's got a crush and his name is Luke." She says. My eyes widen. "What? No! Luke's a ghost." I remind her. "A cute ghost." Julie adds, grinning. I sigh. "With a perfect smile."
"Ha! I knew it! Just remember he's made of air." Flynn tells me. "Cute air." I say, smirking. "Just don't get hurt, ok? Obviously you have a connection. Everyone's been asking when you're gonna play again." She says. My eyes widen and I look at Julie.
"Play again? We don't even have anything planned. Luke and I have just been focused on writing songs." I say. "Lucky for you your marketing team has been way ahead of you." She says. "We don't have a marketing team." Julie says. Flynn pulls out a poster for the school dance and grins.
"Yes you do. Heads up, you are playing the school dance to night, and I'm Dj-ing too. I posted it all over social media. You have an excellent marketing team." She says, sliding the paper across the top of the piano towards Julie and I. "No. No. This is in front of the whole school." I say.
Flynn takes her phone out and checks something. "Sorry, it already has 68 likes." She says, then she starts walking off. Julie follows. I scramble to grab my backpack. "Wait!" I say, following after the two of them.
We can't talk Flynn out of tonight, but I have to admit, the idea has grown on me and I'm actually kind of excited. When we get home we go to the garage and tell Luke and Reggie. Alex isn't there. "We're playing a school dance? Sweet!" Reggie says.
"It's not exactly the Strip." Luke says. I roll my eyes at him. "And you're not exactly alive, so maybe you should be thankful that we have a gig." Reggie tells him. "I didn't like it at first either, but it could be a great way for us to build a following." I say.
"Yeah. Yeah, we need to play wherever we can, whenever we can." Reggie says. "No, you're right. Let's rock those kids' faces off and then play the clubs." Luke says, getting ore excited about the idea. "And then record a single that gets a billion streams." Julie says.
"I have no idea what that is, but hopefully it gets us a manager and a tour." Luke says. "Then we'll release a bunch of hit albums." I say. "Put out a country album that does surprisingly well." Reggie adds. I laugh. "What? I know how to play the banjo." He says.
"Then I'll learn to fiddle." Julie says. We're all smiling now. "And before you know it we're being inducted into the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame." Luke finishes. "But one of us isn't there, because we had a blowout in 2032. My bets on Alex, he's so sensitive." Reggie adds.
I roll my eyes at this, but smile none the less. "What are we waiting for, let's get rehearsing." Luke says. "Um, where is Alex?" Julie asks. We all shrug. "Oh well, I can play drums for now." I say. Luke and Reggie stare at me.
"What instrument don't you know how to play?" Luke asks, grinning. "A lot. I can play guitar, piano, drums, and violin." I say. "Wow, that's a lot." Reggie says. "And you learned all those in six years?" Luke asks, amazed. "Everything but violin. My first family had me take lessons." I say.
They nod. "Let's do this. Oh, and Grace?" He says. I turn to him. "We don't need drums for now, just practice with your guitar." He says. I nod and grab my guitar, going to stand next to him. I quickly tune and we get to work.
We don't really play that much though. We just work on how Julie and I are going to move across the stage. I'm smiling the whole time we're coming up with ideas. I've forgotten what it's like to brainstorm with other talented musicians.
All I've ever had were Julie and mom, the guys provide the fresh look that I've been looking for.
