Ethan, Benny and I sit on the floor of the school with headphones in our ears, connected to Ethan's computer, Benny and I sitting on either side of Ethan. We were used to listening to the same thing at once so we had a little double headphone connector plug into the computer so we could all listen without having anyone else listen in as well.
Ethan plugs a flash drive into his computer. "It's from Rory. I found it in my mailbox this morning." He informs us. We click into the video of Rory as we all hover over the computer screen where Rory's face appears. "Hey, guys. Can you believe this? All these books and not a single decent comic."
All of us roll our eyes at him. "No X-Men. Not even The Hulk" "Yeah, well not everyone is a comic book nerd" I mumble and Benny sends me a look of disbelief. "Come on. Focus, buddy. Focus." Ethan urges. "Okay, I uh, I think I found what you're looking for. Check it out" Rory moves the camera to show us a picture inside a book.
"An angel's nest shall seed the Earth, Soul for soul, the black army's rebirth, 'Neath a swallowed moon the dead take route, the barren orchard bears the devil's fruit.'" All of us look at each other with furrowed brows as we think over what Rory just read. "Whoa. Best. Metal. Lyrics. Ever." Rory suddenly says and we all look down at the screen again.
"An angel's nest shall see the earth! Bum-chika-chong-cha-chong-cha-chung!" He starts to sing like he's in a metal band, head-bumping as he does so. "Soul for soul the black army's rebirth! Bum-chika-chong-cha-chong-cha-chung!" Rory continues to sing as I roll my eyes at him. Ethan ends the video so we can stop listening to him singing. "Ugh! I hate poetry! It never makes any sense! What 'angel's nest'!" Benny exclaims in exasperation.
"I'm with you on that one. I have no clue what he just read. My mind is blank" I scoff. "Shh!" Ethan looks between us. He looks around the hallway, making sure no one is listening in on our conversation. "Cubile animus. Nest of souls. They found it by the angel statue in the cemetery, remember?" Ethan reminds us in a whisper. "Oh." Benny and I nod in understanding. "What's 'Seed the Earth'?" I wonder.
"The box was buried in the ground, like a seed, I guess." Ethan shrugs. "Okay. 'The black army'?" Benny suddenly chimes in. "Quiet!" Ethan scolds him as we look around the halls again. "Easy. It's Reverend Black's followers." Ethan informs us. "Wow. So this is why you always get better marks than us in English, huh?" Benny laughs.
"Yeah, Mr. Know-It-All" I scoff. "Yeah. That, and I don't call the teacher 'fart-head" He looks at Benny. "Or 'Moron', 'Idiot', 'Stupid' to his face." the two look at me. "Well, the truth hurts" I shrug and Ethan rolls his eyes at me. "Point taken" Benny sighs. "There's a second video file on the drive" Benny points out. Ethan clicks it and a trailer for the new Dusk movie appears.
"Our love will sparkle for all time. I'm AB positive you will be mine. Drinking your hemoglobin may be a crime, but our love will sparkle for all of time'" The vampire in the movie reads to the girl. "Why is that on there?" Benny exclaims as we all watch it confused. "Bite me. I'm begging you." Ethan suddenly looks up at one of the posters on the wall with the new Dusk movie on it. Another poster was over top of it, informing people the show was sold out.
"Wait...what did the poem say about the swallowed moon?" Ethan suddenly asks, looking between Benny and I. "I dunno" Benny shrugs. "I already told you, my mind blanked on poetry" Ethan types it into his computer before gasping in realization. "That's it. Tonight is the lunar eclipse and there's going to be over 200 kids at that screening." "You mean Two hundred and nineteen kids. Meaning souls" I sigh out.
"No. Don't say it. Do not say it" Benny begs as he looks between us but mostly Ethan. Sarah suddenly appears, looking at all of us. "Hey, what'd I miss?" she wonders. "The absolute worst news yet." Benny sighs. "We have to go see Dusk III" "Yep, you've lost it. I am not going. Nope. No way. I'd rather stay at home helping my aunt than go see that. No way!" I deny, grabbing my things.
