"Malfoy! Why are you following me?"
"Where are you going?" he asked me, rubbing his hand.
"Um, I asked you a question first." I answered him.
"Where are you going, Mason?" he asked me through grit teeth.
"Leave me alone, Malfoy, I'm going to my room." I said continuing to walk where I had originally had been going.
"Ok. That's what I asked." he said
I spun around, "You still didn't say why you were following me."
"I was following you because I wanted to know why you were going towards the Slytherin rooms." He said.
"Shortcut." I said, staring at him.
I walked away from him, shuffling back to my room. I could feel his icy eyes digging a hole in the back of my head.
Hermione was there waiting for me in the Gryffindor common room.
"How was detention?"
"Didn't have it, Snape was 'busy'," I said, setting my bag down on one of the tables.
"You were down there an awfully long time, Harry and Ron went to dinner," she said, prying. "Did Malfoy say anything?"
"Yeah, not much though, I shut him up," I pridefully said.
"Like what?" She said sitting down on the couch.
I sat down across from her and repeated the conversation.
"Why are you sorry, Hermione, for having muggles as parents?" I said, "Malfoy's a loser, besides my parents are muggles too, there's nothing wrong with it."
"I know, but you shouldn't have gotten detention for it," She said.
"It's ok, Malfoy deserved it," I said, smiling," I just wish I would've thrown something harder, like a plate, or a teacup."
"Shall we go to dinner?" she asked me.
"Yes! I'm starving! Being back in school is tiring."
Hermione and I walked down to dinner in the grand hall, where Harry and Ron were arguing over Quidditch. Hermione had her back facing the Slytherin table, so I was facing it, and Malfoy. I could see his icy glare all the way across the grand hall. Toward the middle of dinner he got up, and walked out of the hall.
"I'll be right back, I have to use the loo," I said standing up to follow wherever Malfoy was going.
He walked quickly. I stayed close enough to follow, but far enough behind to be unnoticed. He made his way to the Astronomy Tower, a place generally off limits to students, with the exception of class time. I could hear my father saying "If you're going to do something, make sure you do it right. If you're going to do it half-ass, why bother?" I continued to follow to where I knew I was not supposed to be going. If I was going to really have a memorable first day back, I suppose just a single detention was not going to cut it.
It appeared he had climbed the tower to look eagerly out at the sunset almost as if he was missing something. That, or he was longing for the blanket of darkness speckled with stars that was approaching. I hadn't realized it was possible for a Malfoy to experience emotion, other than hatred and pettiness, that is.
"Mason, I know you're there. If you're going to stalk me, you could be at least a little more secretive about it," he said, still looking out over the school.
Shit! He wasn't supposed to know about me.
"What gave me away?" I asked him, showing myself. I wasn't much to look at, at the moment. My long, curly brown hair was in tangles around my shoulders, and my makeup was wearing off.
"What didn't?" he scoffed, as he looked me up and down.
"Well, if I'm going to sneak around suspiciously, I may as well learn from the best,"
"I'll take that as a compliment," he sassed back.
"What are you doing up here, Malfoy?"
"Last time I checked, this wasn't an area off limits to students," he said.
"It's only allowed for classes, it's off limits otherwise," I said, proving him wrong. "I'm leaving before I get caught. The last thing I need is another detention with you," I told him and walked off.
Luckily, I didn't have Malfoy in any of my classes. He sure knew how to push a person's buttons. Being a Slytherin was enough, and being a sworn enemy of my friends wasn't alright with me.
I hurried back down to the Great Hall and sat down at our table.
"Did'ya fall in?" Ron asked showing his Weasley sense of humor.
"No there was a line," I said casually, making my excuse.
Malfoy re-entered the hall. Did he go to the tower to confuse me, or did he do something up there I didn't catch? He was glaring at me again.
"Hey, I'm done eating, I need to get a start on my homework, I have a lot and it's only the first day of school," I said, giving them all a reassuring smile. It was common knowledge that sixth years had more free time than the prior years, however, the amount of homework and dedication that came with N.E.W.T. classes were underestimated.
I grabbed my bag and headed for the door, peering back for one last look at my friends, and then Malfoy, who had a weird look on his face. A confused look, which turned back to his normal glare when he looked away.
The Gryffindor common room was empty; everyone was still catching up with one another in the Great Hall. I let out a sigh as I plopped down on the couch. I could already tell this was going to be a long year.
