I woke up with a start the next morning. I'd had the weirdest sleep in my life the night before. Usually I don't dream very much but this night all I could dream about was a child. I myself wasn't in the dream but I saw the child grow from being born through her toddler years until she was already in grade school. By the time I was about to wake up, I saw the girls 8th birthday party. She was sitting at the head of the table behind a huge cake with tons of candles on it. I couldn't make out any faces but there were maybe 15 other kids sitting on the sides of the table and a handful of adults standing around them. A hand reached over to light the candles on the cake and a head popped up from over her left shoulder. The woman looked like me. Clearly older but definitely me. I got a quick glance over to right shoulder at who I assumed was her father and saw a man I didn't know. He had the most gorgeous green eyes with dark hair, much like his daughter. Before I woke up, I saw both of her parents kiss her cheeks and tell her to make a wish.
Now I never dream. Most of my nights are filled with blissful dreamless sleep and I'm okay with that. When I do dream however, they're usually messages from my subconscious, or at least that's what my therapist used to say. The last two times I dreamed was the night before I told Nate to go to Europe. I had a dream of him sailing down a coast line to which he eventually docked in a small European looking town. He just seemed happier in my dream and I took that as a sign that it was his time. The last time I dreamt was the night I decided to come back to the Outer Banks. I was fast asleep in my New York apartment when I had a memory of Sarah, Rafe and I playing in the backyard. The dream was such a vivid memory but watching the three of us play was a regular aged Wheezie telling me it was time to come home. However Wheezie wasn't even old enough to play with us back then, she was still in her crib.
I tried to wrap my brain around what this meant for a better part of an hour before I just decided I needed to get out of the house. Topper had left early in the morning to help his mom with something so I dragged Rafe out of the house for a twin day.
"Let's grab a coffee." He suggested as we strolled the shops.
He held the door open for me as we entered and ordered. We decided to just take a walk through the neighborhood for once. Homes lined the perfectly manicured sidewalks and at least a half mile. Home owners in their yards said hello or stopped to chat for a second but as we got to the second to the last house on the lane, there were 2 construction trucks blocking the sidewalk.
"Someone moving in?" I asked my twin confused.
"Not that I heard of."
Any real estate business done in the OBX without our knowledge was bad for business on our end. I hadn't even heard of any property being sold.
"Isn't this the Mckinnons? The old man died like a year ago and it's been vacant." Rafe said.
"Did it get sold?" I asked.
We decided to look around trying to find anyone working on the site that could provide answers.
"Hi There." Some lady asked, walking out to meet us.
"Hi. So sorry to bother, we were just wondering who was moving in. I didn't realize the house sold." I explained.
"Oh no bother. The house actually didn't. My names Grace Mckinnon and I inherited this place from my father." She explained.
"That makes sense. Sorry we're Rafe and Scarlett Cameron. We work for Cameron Development and Real Estate." I introduced, extending my hand as did Rafe.
"You're Wards kids?" She asked.
"Yep." Rafe answered.
She went on to tell us how she and Daddy went to high school together when she lived here way back.
"Small world." I smiled.
"Certainly. Let me introduce you to my son, he looks about your ages." She said before hollering into the house for her son 'Danny'.
Out of no where came a man dressed in jeans and a t-shirt with work boots, a tool belt and covered in tattoos.
"Yeah mom." He said, jogging over to greet us.
One look at those eyes and I knew who he was.
I guess I stared at him a little too long because Rafe nudged me.
"Nice to meet you man. I'm Rafe and this is my twin Scarlett." He said before they shook hands.
"You too dude and you as well Ms. Scarlett." He smiled, extending a hand to me.
I shook it quickly before dropping my hand.
"Where did you guys move from?" I asked.
"Maine actually. Our son made the move down here too to help us renovate the place and get it ready to move into." Ms. Mckinnon said.
"Maines beautiful." Rafe commented.
As if he had ever been to Maine.
"You look so familiar." I blurted out to Danny knowing damn well I'd seen him in my dreams.
"You too. I guess we'll have to get to the bottom of that one day." He smiled.
I had to explain on the drive home why I was being so weird as Rafe wouldn't take 'no reason' as an answer.
"So you had a dream that you were married to and had kids with some random dream husband and now he's appeared 3 streets down?" Rafe exclaimed.
"Yeah! It's so freaky I haven't dreamed since New York." I told him.
"Maybe it's a sign."
