I was sweating my freaking tits off as I swung a perfect backhand that landed with spin on the opponent's court. Thankfully, she reacted at the last minute and wasn't able to reach the ball in time as it swerved out of her way. I blew out a breath and dropped to my knees in relief.

It's been almost three hours, and I finally won the last set to determine a winner. By far, this was definitely the hardest game I've ever played this season, and I was dying by result. The end score was 7-5, 6-4, and it was definitely a struggle.

I stood up from my knees and walked over to the net to meet the other girl, who was equally as tired, but had a wide smile on her face.

"Nice match," she said with short breaths, "You a senior?"

I nodded, "Yeah, thank you." I grinned, "You were amazing, and you're fast. Like, really fucking fast," I covered my mouth for my language, "Oops, sorry."

"You're all good," she smirked. "Are you planning on playing next year for college?"

I shook my head, "Maybe recreationally. I haven't heard back from any potential colleges."

She frowned, "That's a pity. I think you'd be fucking amazing," she emphasized her curse word as she winked. "Plus, I'd really like to play a match with you in the future."

"Aw, you're sweet. Maybe we'll cross paths someday?"

"Maybe," she shook my hand firmly, and instinctively I retracted my hand.

"Uh, sorry, I didn't mean for that to be rude." I made an awkward smile and waved my hands, "I'm just super sweaty."

She shrugged and took my hand again to give me a proper shake, "I don't mind sweaty." She then moved her hand back to her side and smirked, "I'm Avery Chance. Make sure to not forget it next time we meet."

Before I was able to give her my name, she started to walk off the court as she shouldered her equipment bag. She walked towards her coach, who handed her a water bottle and started praising how well she did despite the loss.

I walked over to my duffel bag and put it on my shoulder as well. I had my racquet in my hand still as I walked off the court and was instantly greeted with my whole team cheering. My eyebrows raised in surprise as Lily came up to me and gave me a huge hug which resulted in my feet being lifted off the ground.

I shrieked and watched Riley, our tennis captain come up as Lily set me down. Riley patted me on the back, "Great job, Addy." I smiled at her, then at Lily.

"Thanks, guys!" I hesitated as I looked at everyone else who were surrounding me. "You all didn't have to stay? I know that was a long match, I feel bad."

Lily piped up, "We're still a team despite playing singles. We'll support you, plus that was an amazing match. You know that match definitely seeded you for a good spot in Regionals this year, right?"

I bit my lip, vaguely knowing that was the case, "I didn't think of it like that. I just know it was hard."

Riley shook her head in amusement, "Well, you did a great job...unlike my match."

Lily gave Riley an eye roll, "You won 6-1, 6-0. Shut up."

Riley frowned, "Yeah, but-"

Lily shushed her by giving her a look, then she looked at me and seemed to notice her arms were still around me. She took a step back and rubbed the back of her neck in embarrassment.

Ever since Monday, Lily and I were actually good. We still talked, and we still joked around. It wasn't saying much since it was only Wednesday, but I think we were in good spots, and I definitely think Lily knows that I only wanted to be friends.
