Lou and Cecil lingered in front of the school until the first bell rang. Lou didn't know where Ariyah had gone after she'd finished setting up the prank, but she hoped it would work. All they had to do now was wait.

Lou Ellen's first class was art, with Ariyah and Charlotte, but unfortunately it wasn't a practical lesson so the teacher didn't need to fetch anything from the supply room. Break passed. Lunch came and went - Will and Nico sat with them again, much to everyone's delight - and still there was nothing.

Finally, as the students were making their way to their final lesson, the news came buzzing down the hallway like a swarm of bloodthirsty flies. Charlotte craned her head to hear it before it reached them. She frowned, hearing something,  then "The art teacher's a WHAT?!" she cried, and suddenly it was upon them, a wave of noise and surprise and questions crashing over their heads and breaking against the walls. For a moment Lou Ellen was drowning in it, then she was gasping in fake surprise and the story was all around her and she let herself be swept away.

Throughout the last lesson and beyond, it was all anyone could talk about. The art teacher was a cow - literally. A pink cow, at that. The maths teacher called for quiet but was unsuccessful, leaving the classwork up on the board in the desperate hope that someone might do it. But no, they had better things to think about.

"What do you mean a cow?"

"I mean a cow!"

"And it was pink - no joke!"

"The art teacher?"

"-just went to the supply cupboard and BAM-"

"Where is she now?"

"How is this possible?"

"What?""Why?""Where?"

"How?" "When?"

"Who?"

Even after school ended, most students stayed in the school courtyard to spread the news. Lou was waiting for Cecil, listening to the hum of speculation all around her, when she saw Ariyah.

The girl was pushing through the crowd towards Lou Ellen, a panicked look in her eyes. When she finally reached her, she grabbed Lou by the shoulders.

"Was that you? Did I do that? Will she be okay? What happened?" Ariyah took a breath. "Oh, lord, I turned the art teacher into a cow! What do I do, Lou?!"

Lou Ellen took a deep breath. She'd made her choice - there was no backing out now. No denying it.

"It'll wear off in a couple of minutes, if it hasn't already."

Ariyah stared at Lou Ellen for a long moment. Lou Ellen held her gaze, unblinking.

Finally, Ariyah exhaled heavily. "Next time, some warning would be nice. Also, you have got to teach me how to do that."

Lou Ellen grinned and stepped forward to hug her friend.

"I knew I could trust you."

"So, what, you're a witch?"

Lou Ellen laughed. "Daughter of Hecate, but pretty much the same thing, yeah."

"So you're a demigod."

"Technically Hecate's a titaness, but yes, I'm a demigod."

"And I was getting defensive that you were against them! How did you keep a straight face?"
