JUNGKOOK POVI take my seat at the table, seeing everyone eating already. "Oh, that looks good," I hear a muffled voice speak behind me. Within seconds my bulgogi beef depletes, making my blood boil.
"Hyung, you have your own food!" I raise my voice.
Jin hyung's eyes flicker to mine, munching on his food. My food.
"Did you make it?" He asks.
His question stuns me. "N-no, but—"
"Then it's not actually yours, is it?" He smirks, basking in victory.
I sigh, finding it pointless to argue with him. Jimin's phone dings suddenly, picking it up and reading the notification. "Are you guys doing anything for Kang's birthday?"
I narrow my eyes at him. "When's her birthday?"
He looks at me in disbelief. "Kook you've been neighbours with her for 8 years and you don't even know her birthday?"
"Well how do you know? You just met her like a week ago," I ask, suspicious.
He shows me his phone. "I'm friends with her on SNS, it just alerted me her birthday's this coming Saturday." I look away in thought. Why don't I know her birthday?
Lunch comes to an end, everyone getting ready to leave. Haru walks over to Hoseok, kissing him. I cringe and push his shoulder. "Dude, get a room."
He smiles apologetically at me, holding Haru's hand. "Hey Haru, are you planning on doing anything for Kang's birthday?" Jimin asks.
Her eyes suddenly widen, concern laced in her features. "No."
"No? Aren't you like her only friend?" I smile smugly, amused she's not bothering to do anything.
"Asshole, I'm her best friend not her only friend," she snaps, pointing at the group of girls walking to class. Kang Byeol's in the middle, her soft brown hair falling loose on her shoulders. Her friends seem to be talking to her or over her, her face showing nothing but indifference.
"Yeah, no, only friend," I say observing her demeanour around her clique.
"Well, she doesn't like celebrating her birthday. So, no."
Hoseok looks at her weird. "Come on, babe. No one hates their own birthday."
"Trust me, she does. Don't try anything, Jeon," she points her finger accusingly at me. I look at her innocently, sighing defeated.
"Okay, fine."
She kisses Hoseok's cheek one last time before walking over to Kang.
"You're going to, aren't you?" Namjoon sighs and shakes his head.
"Hyung, you know me so well," I smile devilishly, a million ideas running through my head.
"Let's throw her a surprise party! We could surprise her at her door," I laugh.
"I-I don't know Kook, maybe there's a reason she doesn't like celebrating it," Jimin adds softly, feeling guilty he even told me.
"She probably just didn't have friends to celebrate with. I say surprise her," Yoongi hyung smirks.
"Great! Saturday we meet. Bring the camera too."
I feel myself stare at her in class, excited for Saturday. Not gonna lie I'm curious too of why she doesn't like her own birthdays, maybe it's because her—
"Can I help you, Jeon?" She turns around grumbling.
"No, you can't," I cheekily reply, laughing in excitement.
She rolls her eyes and flips me off before turning back to the whiteboard. Just you wait, Kang Byeol...

Finally Saturday arrives. I'm at the store with Yoongi and Hoseok hyung buying party poppers and balloons. "What colour does she like?" Hoseok asks me.
"Her room's purple. Try that," I tell him. He then proceeds to pick out purple balloons that spell out 'happy birthday'.
We pay and drive back home, the two in the back inflating them one by one. Yoongi holds the camera in his hand and I have the party popper. I can't wait to see the look on her face when I prank her good. I start laughing, imagining her flustered face appearing as she opens the door. I call Jimin and the others to come meet me at her house in the group chat.
Once we arrive, I signal Yoongi hyung to start recording. The rest start showing up as well confused.
As I knock on her door with deliberate force I see Haru in the corner of my eye rushing up to me. "Jeon Jungkook I fucking told you!" She shouts angrily, almost sounding frantic for some reason. I've never heard her address me like that before, almost catching me off guard.
However her attempts to stop me come too late as the unfortunate girl swings open her door readily. Once her face comes into full view I pop the compressed confetti in her face with a loud sound shouting excitedly.
I shove the balloons at her, the big bold words glaring into her. "Happy birthday, Kang!" I laugh, Yoongi giggling at the side.
However her reaction takes me by surprise. She almost looks as if someone shot her dog, standing still and unable to do anything. She looks over at everyone, the camera then at Haru's guilt-ridden gaze and slams the door shut so loud all of us flinch.
My collar gets pulled forward and I'm slap across the face suddenly. I hold the side of my cheek, now red and throbbing in pain. "What the hell, Ha—"
"I told you not to do anything! Look what you've done!" She shouts, her voice full of pain. She looks over at her boyfriend, face full of regret. "And you, Jung Hoseok, I thought you knew better."
Everyone doesn't dare speak a word, all feeling out of place at what just happened. I can't take this bullshit.
"Come on this is stupid. Don't tell me she can't take a fucking joke? I do this shit all the time," I push past her, opening the door forcefully.
"It's different this time, Jungkook!" She shouts from outside but I don't bother listening and search for Kang in the house.
"Come on Kang Byeol don't be a fucking wuss. It's just a joke, why so—"
I stop midsentence as soon as I'm met with the most unexpected sight.
Kang Byeol seated on her sofa, crying her eyes out.
