The False Prince by Jennifer A Nielsen, is the first book in the Ascendance SERIES.
Yes, those of you who have read this book will be happy to know that Nielsen is writing at least two more!!!
Anyway, this is, I believe, my favorite series out there.
Bevin Connor, a minor lord, wants the throne. To do so, he takes four orphans from all over Carthya (the fantasy country in which he lives) with similar resemblance and features. He plans to make one of them impersonate the the long-lost Prince Jaron to take over the throne. Sage, one of the boys, doesn't want anything to do with it. But the message is clear: Play along...or die.
So I guess we'll start with things I liked.
Sage. The story is from the orphan Sage's perspective. He's one of those arrogant, sarcastic characters everyone loves. I certainly did. His humor is fantastic, and while he pretends just to look out for himself, he really cares deeply about other people. He's probably one of my favorite characters ever. (Not the favorite though, I'd probably have to give that medal to M-bot, from Skyward by Brandon Sanderson)
The writing style. Nielsen's writing is very good. It is, however, written for younger readers, so it's a pretty easy read. It's written in first-person narrative, meaning, instead of saying "Sage slipped around the corner," you'd say "I slipped around the corner." I generally prefer that perspective.
Those of you who have a liking for sarcastic humor, this is the book for you. The sarcasm is laid on thick.
The danger. I like books where the main character is constantly in danger. That's this book to the fullest. Sage is constantly getting himself into scrapes, whether it be his own doing or just bad luck. There's a good deal of violence, but not very graphic and never much blood.
A big plus: There's no swearing. It's getting harder and harder to find a book with no swearing.
The plot twists! This is one of those books, where even though you're seeing it in first person narrative, the author still holds back on you. Sage will do things behind the scenes, and then all of the sudden you have to go "How did you do that???" and then he's like "Oh yeah I did so and so when this was happening" and then you feel like and idiot because you should have seen that coming. I loved that about this book.
Okay, now to the things I didn't like.
1) It wasn't longer.
2) It has virtually no fanbase.
3) There's no movie. It would've made a great movie! Or maybe I'm glad they didn't because they probably would've botched it.
I really can't think of anything I didn't like about this book. 10/10 stars! I would say ages 10 .
So, what books have you read that sound similar to this? Recommend them to me, please!
