Chapter 20... Hide

I scratched my head. "Actually, I have plans with the girls."

"Oh... well okay. I guess we can do the club some other time." He kissed my forehead. "I'll play some golf with your dad instead."

When he left, I released a sigh of relief. I let Chris out of the closet wondering how much of that he had heard. The last thing I wanted or needed was him asking about a tire iron and note— especially now that we were in such a good place. I waited to hear him mention something- anything about Carter and I's relationship, but he didn't. Instead, he grabbed my hand and slid Carter's ring off of my finger. Then he kissed my forehead.

"I have to get ready for work. Don't put that thing back on while I'm gone," he smiled.

I giggled and nodded. Then, I watched Chris escape through the window. Another breath of relief left my lips. Thank God he hadn't heard anything he wasn't supposed to. I didn't want my possible new man to know I was a murderer...

Oh my God. I was a terrible person. I was lying to the guy I liked. I was hurting and cheating on another guy who was head over heels in love with me, and I had murdered my twin brother.

I was a killer yet Chris called me angelo. There it was— that signature guilt. How could I even think that I deserved happiness with Chris after everything I had done?

(Carter's POV)

After the Fall Ball, I had come to the conclusion that Madison really liked this Officer Russo guy. Why else would they find it so hard to stay away from each other? Having known Mads for the majority of her life, and basically dating her since childhood, I'd like to think of Officer Russo as a bump in the road— a very annoying bump with a New York- Italian accent. In other words, I didn't see him as a threat. That, however, didn't mean he didn't need to be taught who Madison belonged to.

I'd noticed the smell of his body wash in her bedroom. It was the same one from the night of the dinner. She thought I was too stupid to recognize, but I know when she's hiding something. Just like that tire iron and note, I knew she was hiding Officer Russo in her bedroom.

I also knew she didn't have plans with Scarlett and Megan. Megan had visited me before I had left the house earlier to tell me how pissed she was that I had proposed to Madison, then she had told me she was going on a road trip for the weekend to clear her head. As for Scarlett, she'd spent every Sunday since grade school, volunteering at the local orphanage. Nothing and no one had ever been important enough to reschedule that.

Now, here I was, standing outside Officer Russo's house, waiting for him to answer the door. It took a few minutes before he did so. But of course, it did. He needed time to sneak back into his own house.

When he answered the door, I immediately swung. The guy was fast. Even with the element of surprise on my side, he was able to dodge my punch. I swung again and he dodged again. Then I tackled him. We wrestled on the ground for about a minute.

"Did you think I didn't see you jumping through Madison's window?"

"I don't give a fuck what you saw!"

He punched me and my head bobbed like a punching bag. What the fuck was this guy on? Steroids? He picked me up by my shirt collar with just one hand and threw me outside.

"Get the fuck off my property!" He yelled.

I wiped my bleeding lip, rising to my feet. "How about you stay away from my fiance?"

He snorted out a laugh. "If only she knew what you did. Do you really think she would still be your fiance?"

"What are you talking about?"

"Of all the girls in this town, you had to nut in her best friend?"

I froze in shock. How did he know that? We were broken up both times when it happened but I wasn't about to admit that to him. It was none of his business.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"Really? Because the same way your little blonde girlfriend loves to sneak pictures of Madison and me, I have a blonde friend who likes to do the same. And you see he took some very interesting pictures and videos of you and that Morgan girl doing what you shouldn't have been doing."

"You're lying."

"Am I? Imagine if Madison saw her taking your pipe in her bedroom, on her bed the day of her brother's funeral. Imagine if the world saw her riding you in the hospital. I mean, I have the proof if you wanna see."

"How do you know all of this?"

I had caved. He obviously knew everything. It didn't make sense denying it.

"How I know isn't important. What'll happen after I expose you, however..."

I flew up to him and slapped the smirk off his face. He was so taken aback by it, that it took him a minute to turn his head to face me again. He couldn't be mad. He deserved it. He rolls into town, flirts with my girlfriend, spoons with her and sneaks into her bedroom, then threaten to leak my sex tape with another girl and he's surprised?

"See, you're new around here so you don't know how things work. The Governor favors me and he won't let someone like you, ruin me. I can go over there right now and tell him that you photoshopped Megan and me into some pictures and videos and that you're threatening to expose them to the world and break Madison and me up. He wouldn't be too happy about that." I smiled evilly. "Or maybe I should dig up some of your deep dark secrets. I'm sure you have some. My family is friends with this private investigator and..." All of a sudden, I was pinned to a wall.

"You wanna play with fire?" He asked. The anger in his eyes made me laugh in satisfaction. Laughing in his face only made him angrier. He let me go. "Alright. I see how things are going to be." He pointed at the door. "Leave."

"Oh don't worry. I'm going. But just remember, I have the power."

I continued laughing as I left. Seeing him get so worked up after I mentioned the private investigator got me thinking. Maybe he did have some big secret, he didn't want anyone to know after all. Now I was intrigued.
