"Beatrice, are you feeling better?" Marcus asks me. His voice brings me out of my trance.
I look around shocked at how long I've been here. The once-bustling cafeteria was thinning out. The last bunch of people were heading out from their tests.
"Yeah, I'm better now. I obviously just lost track of time." I nervously laugh.
"I would offer you a lift home but I have a meeting to attend. Goodbye Beatrice." He smiles bowing his head as he walks away.
"Goodbye!" I call out to him as he leaves.
Leaving me completely alone.
I pick up my bag and sling it over my shoulder. The weight of the books nearly caused me to collapse.
As I walk down the hallways and out of the school for the last time I find myself reliving all the fond memories I have in this school.
Going to my first class when I was six. Sitting with Susan, Robert, and Caleb at lunch and in most of my classes. Helping Ms. Felix in the library after school. Watching the Dauntless jump off the train and back on it at the end of the day.
It's not something I admit out loud but a small part of me will actually miss this place. At least in this building, I knew what I had to do and I knew where I was meant to be.
But now that I'm an adult and have to go out and venture into the city by myself, I don't know what to do.
When I walk out of the door the distant sound of a train approaching makes me turn my head.
The train is the main transport used by the Dauntless. They test each other's bravery by jumping on and off of it. Almost everybody who isn't Dauntless shakes their heads at their behavior. They all say that the Dauntless are crazy and truthfully they kinda are.
But I've always been fascinated by them. Guess that's the Dauntless side of me.
When I was little and I saw some Dauntless kids running down the street I would always find myself running beside them. They never seemed to mind, they probably thought it was funny to see a stiff run with them. My father on the other hand would always shake his head in disappointment when he caught me.
He told me to stay away from the Dauntless or else I would end up either as insane as them or worse I could get hurt or possibly even killed.
After the tenth time, he caught me I stopped running with them. So instead I would sit outside the school and watch them jump off the train.
I chuckle as I watch them. Most of them screamed in delight as they jumped on.
Once the last of them get on and the train disappears from view I continue my walk home.
I keep to the side of the pavement, almost hugging the wall and I keep my head down as I walk so that not to draw attention to myself. Not that people would want to pay any attention to me anyway.
