Alec's POV

Jace had dropped his phone, which had promptly shattered. Jonathan was standing in front of them, a smug smile on his face.

"Don't worry brother," Jonathan said, twirling his seraph blade in his hand. "I just want to have a chat with your dear parabatai."

"I'm not your brother," Jace replied through clenched teeth. "Alec and Max are my brothers. No one else."

Alec felt a small smile tug at the corner of his mouth, but he quickly wiped any trace of emotion from his face.

"What do you want, Jonathan?" Alec asked, a hint of annoyance in his voice. He wasn't scared, even though he knew better than anyone that Jonathan wouldn't hesitate to slide his blade across his throat.

"You're looking much better, Alexander."

"Alec."

Out of the corner of his eyes, he saw Jace pull a seraph blade from his belt, hiding it behind his back.

He also knew it would be foolish to attack, even if the redhead was outnumbered.

"Why come here? Don't you have something better to do?"

"Like I said, I just wanted to talk with Alexander."

"Then what are you waiting for? I'm all ears." Alec said, trying to sound as if he couldn't care less. But he did. He realized with a sudden jolt of fear that Magnus wasn't anywhere to be seen.

"Privately," Jonathan smirked.

"If you think for one second..." Jace started.

"Relax, Jace. I'm not going to hurt him. I've already done enough of that." Alec mentally rolled his eyes.

"Jace, it's fine," Alec mumbled to his parabatai, following Jonathan to another room.

"Alec..."

"Jace, I said it's fine. I'll only be in the next room."

Jace nodded. The hazel-eyed shadowhunter could tell he was reluctant to let Alec leave his line of sight, especially with Jonathan here.

Alec stopped in front of the other boy in the next room. "What is it you want to talk about?"

Jonathan was facing away from him. His head was bent towards the floor, only slightly. Alec could see the curve of his lips forming a cruel smile.

"It's clear that you care about that disgusting warlock quite deeply," Jonathan's voice was cold as a winter day, where the roads were covered in a thick layer of snow and icicles formed on the roofs of houses.

Alec clenched his jaw to avoid saying something he would later regret.

"How far would you go," Jonathan continued. "To protect him?"

Alec was surprised by his words. That was not at all what he expected from the horrible thing standing in front of him.

"I would give my life for him," Alec answered, his voice so full of confidence that Jonathan turned around in surprise.

"You seem very sure of your answer," He said flatly.

"It's hardly anything I would have to think about. Magnus is everything to me."

"I see," Jonathan's smile was replaced by an emotionless mask. "It would be horrible if something were to happen to him."

Alec's eyes widened to twice their normal size. Had he done something to Magnus?
