Se-joon was quick to find positivity. "Well, at least she isn't telling us to scram!"
"Se-ri ah, have you had your lunch?" Han Jeong-yeon asked, patting her stepdaughter gently on the head. "How are you feeling?"
Se-ri shook her head in response to the first question, "I'm doing okay, Mother. Let me prepare some drinks for all of you."
Seeing her stepdaughter reduced to a shadow of her usual feisty self pained Jeong-yeon, and what was more painful was that she had no way to solve Se-ri's problems.
When faced with this seemingly hopeless situation, as family, they could only provide support and company.
"I'm turning on the TV." Hye-ji said as Se-joon busied himself with opening the boxes of pastries and putting them out on the coffee table.
"Sure, go for it. The remote control is there by the side. Yup, there, further to your left. There's something airing now that you'd like to watch?" Se-ri casually asked, as she brought out glasses of chilled barley tea from the kitchen for her three guests.
"No, but Mother thought it would be a great idea if we watched this together..." Hye-ji trailed off as she worked on connecting Se-ri's television to a video stream on her phone.
"Watch what?"
Se-ri was genuinely curious; it had been years since anyone in the family had made any effort in watching a television program together. The last time that had happened would have been at least two decades ago.
Her stepmother answered her question.
"A series of concert performances, by pianist Ri Jeong Hyeok."
The third and final glass of tea in her hand landed with a loud clink on her coffee table as Se-ri's hand fumbled in surprise.
"Ohhhh watch it, watch it..." Se-joon reached out to help the steady the glass. "You okay, Se-ri?"
The heiress' eyes were widened in disbelief. "Con..concert performances?"
She could hardly believe her ears.
Her family...at least, her stepmother, eldest brother and his wife, had made the effort to come down on a weekend afternoon to spend time with her, watching Ri Jeong Hyeok's performances no less?
"Yes!" Hye-ji announced enthusiastically. "We have the latest one of him playing Piano Concerto No. 2 at Lucerne, and some older ones featuring Clair de Lune, Nocturne, etc. It was really difficult finding these old recordings of his, since not all of them are available on YouTube, but Mother managed to get her acquaintance to compile this."
"Mother..." Se-ri's lower lip trembled with rising emotion as she turned to regard her stepmother, reaching out with both hands to hold the older woman's.
"Don't cry, silly girl. It wasn't much effort. Nothing a token sum couldn't do."
That wasn't quite the truth, but Se-ri didn't have to know.
