"Andrea, would you like to go out for a coffee and bring the kids? The night is fantastic, and Sarah doesn't have school tomorrow." James suggested. "I don't know... maybe it would be fun." He looked at me expectantly, but he was trying to bond again. Trying to surpass the hard blow he witnessed, and I was so grateful for it.
"Tyler is gonna fall asleep for sure." I said and James offered me a smile.
"Probably..." He shrugged. "I would like us to go out and have a little fun." He said confirming how much my husband was trying to fix things.
"Ok... I don't even have to ask them, of course they're gonna say yes." I got up from the couch and began to walk upstairs with James following me.
"They are not going to refuse a night out." He chuckled lightly and that sound was magical to my ears.
We had been through a lot. We almost lost our daughter and we survived. We fought his addiction and we survived. We were going to survived that as well. We were survivors.
While I talked to Sarah, he got our son ready and he carried him on his arms, kissing his cheeks while Tyler giggled happily.
"Where are we going daddy?" He asked him.
"I don't know... mommy is going to decide." He said, looking back at me then. A soft smile across his lips.
"Cool, you guys are taking us to go out at night." Sarah blurted completely ecstatic.
"Just a bit." James said and then he looked at me again, waiting for my suggestion.
"I don't know..." I said shrugging. "Maybe we could go to the bar down at the beach, the kids can play there."
"Good idea." He nodded and we left towards the car.
I sat Tyler on the back and James started the car. It was not far but having to carry Tyler was tiring enough and so the car was a great option. The place was full, as usual. The whole neighborhood loved to go there on a Friday night, when people wanted something quiet. Still we found a table on the terrace and Sarah grabbed Tyler's hand.
"I am going to play with him over there." She pointed at the swings. "So you guys can be alone..." She hushed, looking away for not being able to face us.
Our daughter knew we needed time. It was incredible how grown up she was already.
"Be careful." James told her and then we watched her walking away with her brother talking a lot. We never doubted Sarah was his heroin. His best everything.
I had to chuckle at Tyler's excitement and then I heard James giggle and he turned to me, smiling.
"The little guy is a parrot." He told me, and that sounded so intimate at the same time that my heart melted. His blue eyes rested on mine and I shuddered. "Are you sure about your work? I know you love it." He told me.
"I'll find another." I said. "The doctor told me I couldn't work for a couple of time. I made this decision. The letter was delivered this morning, there's no turning back. I want now to dedicate some time to you and the kids, just you and them, nothing else." I told him.
"So, now will you come on tour with me and bring the kids?" He asked.
"When Sarah is not in school, yes. If you want me to." I looked deep into his eyes searching for an answer and he just showed me the ring back in his finger. "Oh..." I exclaimed emotional.
"I couldn't cope with the idea of you working near him." He confessed. "I know I have to trust you... but..." James shut up shaking his head and I understood him. "It would be too much, Andrea." He added, looking in my eyes again with hurt mirrored in his and that broke me into tiny pieces.
