Grady looked confused. "No, you didn't."
"Huh?" Sophie asked. "I put it right—" Sophie stopped talking when she realized that Grady was right.
The note was gone.
"Hmm, it must have blown away or fell somewhere," Sophie said.
"Sophie I'm still not happy. I would have liked a call!" Grady said.
"I'm s-sorry dad. I was careful."
Grady sighed. "I just...thought something had happened to you."
"Oh, dad," Sophie ran over to hug Grady. "I'm right here. I'm fine."
"I know, I'm just scared. After what happened to Edaline—" Grady stopped to take a deep breath. "Just, tell me if you go somewhere, okay?"
"Okay," Sophie said. "And Dad?" Sophie asked as he started to walk away. "Something happened," Grady instantly snapped his head around to face her.
"What? Are you okay?" He asked, running to her to check for any cuts or bruises.
"I'm fine...it's just...remember my chemistry teacher?"
"How could I forget?" Grady joked.
"Well, she um—well I was walking away from the cemetery and—"
"You went to the cemetery?" Grady asked.
"Yeah, but that's not the point! As I was walking away...I saw her...dead behind a bush."
Grady paled. "W-What?"
Sophie filled him in with all of the details, including the talk she had with Katherine.
Grady's eyes turned dark. "Oh yeah, that organization is definitely apart of this," he said bitterly.
"That's what it seems like, Katherine said that she'll stop by tomorrow to fill us in," Sophie said.
Grady sighed. "This is just crazy. I—"
He was cut off by the ring of the doorbell. "I wonder who that could be," Sophie said.
"I'll check. You stay here Sophie," Grady said as he cautiously made his way to the door. Sophie rolled her eyes.
Grady opened the door. "Who are you?" Grady asked, narrowing his eyes.
Sophie couldn't see who it was, but when it replied, "Keefe Sencen! I'm here to see Foster," Sophie remembered that she had invited him earlier.
"Um we do not accept boys here, thank you! Have a good d—"
"Um hi Keefe!" Sophie said, stepping in front of Grady. "Um dad, this is my friend."
"Yo!" Keefe said, linking his arm with Sophie.
Grady narrowed his eyes at their linked arms. Sophie blushed madly and quickly unhooked her arm. "A friend eh? That's what they all say..." Grady said, crossing his arms and glaring at Keefe.
"Um okay, we're done here! Keefe come on! Let's go to my room!" Sophie yelled, dragging Keefe up the stairs before things could get any more awkward.
When Sophie shut the door behind her, she sighed in relief. "Phew! Sorry Keefe, my dad is a bit overprotective."
"It's fine," Keefe said, smirking.
Sophie giggled awkwardly. She had never brought a boy before to her room and she didn't know how to act.
Just act normal Sophie!
"Do you want something to eat?" Sophie asked.
"Ha! As much as I'd like to, I'm sure your dad wouldn't approve. Besides, we're here to focus on something else, remember?"
"What was it again?" Sophie asked nervously.
Keefe crossed his arms and raised an eyebrow, "stalling I see. Fine I'll just have to guess then. Hmm was it that you finally discovered your feelings for me and you just don't want to share?"
"No!" Sophie yelled quickly, causing Keefe to snicker. "It's just a lot of terrible news and strange news."
"I have time!" Keefe said as he flopped on her bed and put his hands under his chin. He batted his eyes and pretended to twirl his hair like a gossip girl. "Go on!" Sophie rolled her eyes.
She then took a deep breath and told him everything. She told him about Edaline being stabbed and how she may not make it, the man that threatened them and the fire symbol that was connected, how the man wanted to know information about her parents, and how Sophie found Lady Galvin dead with a stab and a note. As Sophie explained, his face grew paler and paler.
When she finished, he didn't say anything. Soon, the silence was so long that Sophie started to tug her eyelashes out. "Well?" Sophie said.
"I-I don't know what to say. I'm sorry Sophie—about Edaline. That's scary how there are guys out there that want to kill you guys."
"Yeah," Sophie mumbled, looking down.
"It's going to be okay Sophie. We are going to figure this out," Keefe assured, looking like he wanted to reach for her hand, but he held back.
"I hope so. Lady Galvin's death really shocked me."
"She's pure evil, but to murder her? That's just..." Keefe trailed off.
"Yeah, and I don't understand why. How could she be involved with this?"
A look passed through Keefes eyes that Sophie wasn't quite sure she understood, but it was quickly replaced by his teasing self. "I don't know, but this is where you thank me! I knew you'd need me! Just admit it, you need me Foster," Keefe said, with a grin.
"Whatever Keefe. So what's this so-called genius plan of yours?" Sophie asked, rolling her eyes as he shimmied across the room.
"We break into her house!" Keefe announced. Sophie choked.
Was it possible to choke on nothing?
"What?" Sophie asked.
"We break into Lady Galvin's house," Keefe said casually.
"Keefe! We can't do that! We can get in big trouble! Plus my dad would never approve."
"Ugh Foster, always being so logical. Think about it. If we check her house, we can learn information as to why she was involved in all this. And we can sneak out at night, so your dad won't know."
"Keefe, but that can be dangerous! People are after me. Besides, how do we even get in?"
"Foster, you really think I didn't think this through?" Sophie gave him a dead-panned look. Keefe rolled his eyes. "Well, I did. Ta da!" Keefe said as he dangled a pair of keys.
Sophie gasped. "Where did you get those?"
"Um off of Lady Galvin's desk today. She um left them there," Keefe said.
"No, she didn't Keefe. How did you get them?" Sophie demanded. Those keys could not have possibly been on Lady Galvin's desk. Those were the same keys that the squirrel took from Lady Galvin when she was dead. Sophie saw that squirrel run off into the woods.
"Keefe?" Sophie asked when he didn't answer.
"Umm..." Keefe said, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Keefe, where were you after school today?" Sophie demanded.
Keefe looked up nervously, "the um...cemetery."
