The smell of candles, roses and sex was still in the air when sunlight through the window fell on the photos which were hung on the wall. Photos of the time when I was so in love with Cain. Photos that weighed on my chest like a burden. I felt guilty for wanting a break from the toxic circle of our relationship. Tugging at the sheet furiously, I pulled it over my head to cover my face from the photos.
"Why the fuck can't you let me sleep peacefully?" Cain yelled, yanking the sheet away from me. Irked by his tone, I threw him a glare. No guy would have the audacity to yell after having a night full of sex, except Cain Taylor.
I was starting to realise how much I'd overlooked his uncalled aggressiveness. Cain's anger issues had been aggravating ever since I moved away from London to chase my dream of becoming a Disney Animator. Cain hadn't been happy with my decision and I. An art degree from the University of Stanley wasn't a walk in the park; I had strived hard to get a seat. I had thought I could make him understand, but I had only been trapping myself in an unhealthy relationship subconsciously.
Maybe it was time to get a break from this.
"I saw your friend's Instagram post. Why were the two guys kissing you?" he yelled, the accusation in his voice unmistakable. "You went to a party I had specifically told you not to go to. Why won't you listen to me once? Why are you behaving like a whore?"
"The distance doesn't make me a whore," I reminded him as my eyes drifted to the photos, and I took a deep breath as guilt engulfed me. Calm down, Kate. Cain loves you. "It was the end of this semester's celebration. They just pecked my cheeks — like a brotherly kiss, Cain. You know they are in a relationship—"
"They are still boys."
The accusation in his words slammed a rush of fury through me. "And your point?" I challenged him, running a hand through my red bed hair.
His tone low and clipped, he muttered, "How about you stop dressing up like a slut and whoring, Kitty?"
Half stunned and half repelled by his audacity, I was rendered speechless for a split second. Only for a second before fury shot through my bloodstream, and I retorted in a chirpy voice with my dose of sarcasm, "How about you grow a pair of balls, honey?"
Silence stretched in the room.
"Cain, please. Can we not do this? I'm only here for the summer holidays. I don't want to spend that fight with you." I sighed, ignoring the red flags flaring in this talk.
Just like I ignored the fact that Cain Taylor was becoming frustratingly controlling and borderline toxic. I rarely recognised the boy I once loved. Once loved. Not anymore. We were holding onto the tattered cloth that was ready to snap into two for good.
