The Paw Patrol had never failed to save someone in need. They had successfully saved people (and animals) from as simple as helping them with day-to-day activities, to as bad as rescuing them from an erupting volcano.  But it all changed on that one day.

Everest was really excited about her first Sea Patrol rescue. Having lived in the mountains away from the rest of the pups, she was rarely included with these kinds of rescues. So when Ryder asked her to join their latest Sea Patrol rescue, she couldn't help but say yes.

The rescue was simple: save an underwater shipwreck from Sid Swashbuckle's hands. Everest was excited to wear her own Sea Patrol outfit despite not having his own water vehicle.

The rescue was successful, with Everest ending up hijacking a ride in Marshall's rescue boat. As a reward for the pups, Ryder let them spend the rest of the day on the beach.

"I bet I can hold my bweath undewwatew longew than anyone of you dudes," Zuma cockily declared.

"I won't be so sure," Chase mocked him. "This pup's got a body full of air."

"Oh, you'we on, Chase," the water pup challenged.

"Hey, can I join too?" Marshall asked, paddling towards them.

"Me too!" Everest called out from behind him, making Zuma chuckle.

"Suwe dudes. Weady? One, Two, Thwee, let's dive in!"

The four pups all took a deep breath and submerged underwater. Since they weren't wearing their gear anymore, they had to close their eyes as to not get seawater on them.

Marshall resurfaced first, gasping for air. Despite his experience in fire rescues, he could only hold his breath for a short time.

Chase surfaced next, coughing in an attempt to expel the little water that he inhaled. The shepherd looked around and groaned. If there's one thing he hated more than going to the dentist, it's losing.

After quite some time, Zuma surfaced, shaking the water off his head.

"Aww, I wasn't last?" he pouted, seeing that Everest wasn't up yet.

"Huh, who knew Everest could hold her breath for so long?" Chase wondered in amazement.

"It's been two and a half minutes," Marshall muttered anxiously. "Most could only hold their breath for two minutes at most."

"Maybe Evewest was diffewent?" Zuma asked, getting worried himself. "I'll go check on her."

"I'll go with you," Chase said and together, the two dived back down on the water.

Marshall tried to believe that Everest was just exceptional at this game, but his lessons echoed in his mind.

"The rule of 3s in survival: 3 minutes without air, 3 hours without shelter, 3 days without water, and 3 weeks without food."

Everest has been under the water for more than three minutes now, the medic pup thought worriedly. I just hope Chase and Zuma finds her before-

"Mawshall!" Zuma shouted upon surfacing from the water. "We need to get Evewest to shore fast!"

"I'm on it!" the fire pup said before getting the husky on Chase's neck and swimming as fast as he could to shore.

"I'll go get Ryder," Chase said upon reaching dry sand. Marshall paid him no mind as he pressed his ear near the husky's mouth and tried to look for breathing. He found none. He tried to check for a pulse but found none as well.

Taking a deep breath to calm himself down, he gave Everest five rescue breaths before doing CPR on her. Two compressions per second for one minute, his mind supplied for him.

Marshall barely noticed the others arriving as he focused on his job.

"Come on, Everest," he muttered, tears springing in his eyes. "You've got to live, dammit!"

He continued doing CPR on her for 15 minutes, which was more than the designated time but he didn't care.

"Mawshall," Zuma whispered. "You can stop now."

"NO!" the medic pup screamed at him. "Everest has to live. She has to."

"Marshall, please," Chase whispered, his heart breaking at how much his best friend was hurting.

"NO!" Marshall flailed around when Ryder tried to pick him up. "Everest! Everest, please!"

"Everest is gone, Marshall," Ryder said softly, trying not to cry himself while hugging the dally close to him. "She's gone."

Everyone within the five feet radius could hear the sobs coming from the heartbroken pup as he cried against his owner's shoulder. The other pups couldn't help but cry as well. Everest was their friend, despite the short time that she spent with the team.

Ryder had tears gathering in his eyes as well. Paw Patrol was supposed to save those in need, but they couldn't even save one of their own.

He knew he had to tell Jake soon but for now, they needed time for themselves.
