I massaged my forehead with both hands as I tried to calm down.

Just when I thought I would wrap up the case, my culprit was murdered. Now I had something else to investigate. My mind flashed back to the events of the last night, how I had found Dave's body and a night woman beside him. She was in the hospital now, the doctors said that she lost a good amount of blood from the bullet wound she got but she would be fine since the bullet didn't go too deep into her upper arm and she was responding well.

She knew something, if she didn't she wouldn't have been shot. Some people were with them before I came in, but I didn't see the faces.

She was still unconscious when I admitted her so I had to leave her in the hospital to rest. I tried to keep my eyes open since I came home late after taking the night woman to the hospital and couldn't get any sleep.

Now I was just too tired to go to work, I called to let them know I would be coming in late. Then my body dropped on the bed and I slept off with my work clothes on.

I decided to visit the hospital after work to see if she was awake. I was lucky enough to see her sitting up and talking to the nurse when I came around.

They both looked up at me when they sensed my presence. She looked at the nurse when I stopped at her hospital bed as if trying to let her know that somebody was here and she was not comfortable with it.

"There's no need to be alarmed, he brought you here. I'm very sure he means no harm."

"Thank you nurse, I'd like to speak with her in private."

The nurse nodded and left but I don't think she was pleased about it, the look of disapproval she gave the nurse let me know.

She looked at me. She was pretty though, had dark skin and a pair of dark eyes, her nose was small and so were her lips. I expected her to say something but she didn't so I did.

"So, Ms..."

"Miriam.", she completed.

"Miriam, yes you—"

"Let's not talk about me, who are you?", she interrupted.

"Officer Olajide, you can just call me Jide to avoid unnecessary attention.", I said showing her my ID and I saw fear flash in her eyes. She managed to compose herself.
I told her how I found her and about every other thing that happened in the last night.

"There's just one thing I need from you Miriam. You had contact with Dave. He's a criminal we have been trying to arrest but so far, we haven't found anything tangible on him since I have been investigating. He died last night — no, was murdered — and we need your help to find the killer. You saw him didn't you? I mean the killer."

She nodded.

"What did he look like?"

"He had a gun, he was dark and looked like he was in his thirties, he had a bald head and—" she brought her head down, and placed her fingers on the bridge of her nose— "He had his gunmen, they were about three."

Why did I feel like she wasn't telling me everything?

I asked her about the time and place of the murder and she said she didn't exactly know the time but it was a night club owned by the same woman who owned the brothel she lived in. She also explained that the brothel was off limits to those who didn't live in it and all the sexual activities were done in the night club. Some kind of brothel.

"Are we done?", she seemed bored.

I nodded.

"So, how am I supposed to settle the bills?"

"I'll do all of that. I just need you to get me information on anything you know when I need it."

She narrowed her eyes at me. "How do I even trust you, for all I know, you could be getting information against me."

Now that one threw me off balance. I didn't even plan on it and she was just giving herself away here. I didn't reply anything to that though. I stood to leave.

"Just hang in there, since the nurse said that the bullet wound was not too deep, you're likely to be discharged early. Just don't make yourself vulnerable, not to any police officer, not even to me."

"Says the man who introduced himself as an officer to me straight up.", she smirked at me and I found myself smiling at her. She maybe had her way with words. That might have been the first time in a long time that I smiled. I ran my hands down my face unconsciously.

"I'll come back if I need anything. The nurse should keep me updated on how you're doing."

I said before I left. I think she whispered a "thank you" but I didn't bother on it. She wasn't the first person.

I got into my car and drove home. It was already night time but not too late. I was greeted by the Jamilah when I opened the door. Had she been waiting for me?

"How was work?", she asked as she led me to my room while she carried my bag.

"Oh, you know. The usual."

She giggled.

"I'm on a new case though, so I'm going to be a little bit busy. It's a murder case this time."

She went quiet and was in a mood of thought. I apologized immediately I remembered that she didn't like to hear about murder. She didn't make a sound after that, except when she told me that my food was on the dining table. After I thanked her, she left giving me plenty of time to think about what happened today. I was going to need time and reliable assistance to piece things together. Right now I had to trust Miriam despite any odds.

I sighed. If I thought the last case was hard, I was in for something worse now.
