Leaving the park, I sped off the hospital. I was almost 20 kilometers over the speed limit. No cop had slowed me down so I got the hospital in what usually was a 20 minute drive, it became a 10 minute drive. I found a parking spot in the crowded parking lot of the hospital. Locking the doors, I ran into the hospital and asked for room 102. They had asked who and why I was visiting and I told them about my mother and how I’m her daughter. They lead me to her room. Anxiously, I knocked on the door and waited. My father opened the door and he looked tired but faked a smile. I looked to where my mother lied on the hospital bed. She looked weak and fragile. It looked as if I touched her, she’d shatter into pieces. “What happened?” I asked my father quietly. My mother was asleep so I had spoken softly. “She had seizure minutes before I texted you.” I saw the pain in his eyes when he spoke, I reflected the same feelings as him. The news brought an ache to my chest and tears started to swell in my eyes. I have been crying so much lately I don’t even know if I can cry anymore tears. Even as I thought about it, tears threatened to fall from my eyes. “Mom…” I walked over to her bed and sat on the chair close to it. I pulled the chair closer to the bed and I sat and grabbed her hand. Putting her left hand into my two hands I felt how cold her hand felt. A single tear drop fell from my eye and landed on the bed sheets. I brushed my thumb over her hand a few times and leaned my head onto the bed. “Mom, I hope you feel better. You are the strongest person I’ve ever met and you are handling things way better than I am; and you’re the one with the cancer.” I let out a forced, unnatural sounding laugh. “I wish there was some way I could help.” I spoke into her arm. I started to cry and the bed muffled my sobs. I heard my dad walk over to me and place a supporting hand on my back. I felt his hand brush the scattered hair behind my ear and I started to straighten my back. Wiping the tears away from my face with one hand, I kept the other hand intertwined with my mother’s hand. I saw my mother shift a little in the bed. I leaned closer to her and said “Mom?” “Hello Becca.” Her voice sounded croaky and quiet. I smiled a little and I saw my mom open her eyes slightly. “How’s my little girl doing?” Smiling more when her voice started to gain strength I said “I’m good. Are you feeling any better?” She nodded. “The drugs they have me on are pretty intense so I can barely feel anything.” “Well I guess the doctor’s know best.” I held her hand tighter. “The doctors said we can take her home at night. They’re going to supervise her for the rest of the day and I’m going to stay with her.” My father said. “I’ll stay too.” Told him. He laughed a little. “You need to go home and study for exams.” I dropped my jaw in shock. “But I need to stay with mom! Plus, I finished most of my studying.” He shook his head and said “You need to concentrate on your life sweetheart; I understand you want to stay with mom but you have to do your work.” “Can I bring my work here and do it while I stay with mom?” This time, my mother laughed. “It is far too distracting here. I love you sweetheart, I’ll see you tonight okay?” I sighed in defeat. “Yeah, okay. Is there at least anything I can do?” My mother cupped her hands around my own. “How ‘bout you make dinner?” I smiled a little and nodded. I leaded over her and gave her a hug. “See you later mom, I love you.” “Love you Becca.” She squeezed me tighter. When we pulled away, I walked up to my dad and gave him a kiss on the cheek. “Bye dad, love you.” He smiled and I walked out the door. Relieved that my mother was okay, I walked down the hallway to the main entrance. On my way there, I caught sight of a familiar head of hair. I walked closer to get a better look at the figure. “Silas?” I asked. The figure turned around and responded “Nope, but close.” I was staring at a man who had shiny black hair and stunning gray, hazel eyes. Shocked, I didn’t say anything. “I’m Silas’s father, and you are?” Stepping out of my dazed state I said “Uh, I’m Becca.” Processing what he had said I shouted “You’re Silas’s dad?” Noticing that I was yelling, I saw a few people giving me odd stares. “Yes I am, is there a problem?” Realizing how rude I sounded I quickly covered it up and said “Oh my god sorry I… I just… didn’t expect you to look so young.” Now that I thought about it, I realized that I really should have saw it coming. Silas had told me that he was immortal so he didn’t age. I don’t know why I was so surprised by his father’s youth. His father was probably a Faded Shadow too, unless Silas was adopted. That thought was quickly casted away when I noticed the similarities between his father and himself. “I’ll take that as a compliment.” He laughed. He looked no older than twenty five years old. He probably got uncomfortable from me just staring blankly at him so he said “Well it was nice meeting you but I’ve got to get some work done.” He started to walk away from me but Silas never talked about his parents so I wanted to get to know his father better. “Wait!” I shouted before I could think about what to say. His father turned around. “I never got you name.” He seemed amused by me so he walked back to wear I was standing. “I’m Dean Michelson.” He stuck out his hand so I grabbed it and shook it. “Do you work here?” He looked almost amused by my question but he answered anyways. “No, my wife is busy and she usually works here so I’m just helping out a little. I’m part of the FBI in case you were wondering.” My mouth must’ve fallen open because he laughed. “Are you a friend of Silas’s?” I nodded and was going to tell him that we were closer than friends but Dean said “Oh, Silas hasn’t told us about you. In fact, he didn’t really tell us anything about Century High.” I tried not to take the comment personally, considering that that he didn’t talk about anything else about the school. For some reason, it still hurt. “Well it was nice meeting you Becca but I really must go.” I nodded “You too.” “I hope to see you again though, tell Silas to let you swing by the house sometime.” My eyes widened at the thought of going into Silas’s house… Silas’s room… “Bye Mr. Michelson.” He waved and then left. At least I left a good impression on him. Well at least I think so. I thought. I walked away from the reception desk and out the doors. The day just kept on getting hotter and it was still humid outside. The air was sticky and I felt it clinging onto my skin with every step I took. Reaching for my hair elastic in my purse, I tied my hair back and pulled it into a bun. I could feel a few trickles of sweat sliding down my forehead already. I sat down in my driver’s seat and closed the door. Immediately I put the AC on full blast. I set it to 22 degrees and laid back in my seat as I let the cold breeze blow in my face. I closed my eyes and heard the whirring of the air conditioning and the rumble of the engine. The air started to cool down and I opened my eyes again. Leaning on my windshield, there was a bloody face pressed against the glass. Their eyes were open and their hair was covered with blood. It was a man who looked in his thirties. I pressed my hands over my mouth to muffle the screeching scream I let out. The man had hand prints that looked burned onto his skin. It looked familiar but I couldn’t remember where it was from. Still staring at the man, I lifted my hands off of my face. Not knowing what to do, I looked for my phone to call Silas. If this was something supernatural, Silas would know. I was still scared out of my mind about the body and when I was about to dial the number, I looked back to the boy but he was gone. I let out a gasp and inspected the glass. There were no prints of blood, no smearing of fingerprints and it looked as if the boy was never there in the first place. I looked around the parking lot to see if anyone had noticed the boy as well but all those in the parking lot was empty with only a few people in it. They all seemed oblivious to whatever I had seen. Taking in a deep breath, I tried to calm myself down. Another hallucination; I think I’m going crazy… I thought in despair. “I need to call Silas.” I mumbled to myself. I still had my phone in my hand so I dialed his number, after a few rings, it sent me to voicemail. He was busy. I couldn’t expect him to pick up his phone whenever I called him. Even though I knew this, I felt slightly devastated that he hadn’t picked up his phone. I made a mental note to call him later. For now, I started up my engine again and started my drive home.
