Twisted Hearts

For someone who was used to breaking hearts, this time Logan had his heart served to him on a silver platter, twice in a row. It had been two days since his encounter with MJ at the hospital, and he still could not understand why she hurt him.

It was early on a Saturday morning when he arrived at Sonya’s building, after making an excuse about going to get some clothes to Antonina. He jogged up the stairs since the elevator was still not working. He arrived in front of her door and stood outside, with his fist in mid-air, debating on what to say to MJ.

He did not want to come out as desperate; all he wanted was to know why she hurt him so much; he could not wait for however long she said before finding out the truth. He had seen the hesitation in her eyes when she said those heart-wrecking words, and it haunted him to think that maybe she had no reason at all to hurt him.

He knocked on the door and waited impatiently for a response but he got none. He was about to knock again when the door opened, revealing a face he was not expecting to see. “Mr Parker, what brings you here?” Sonya asked hastily.

“What are you doing here?” He asked sternly, and Sonya unconsciously pushed the door.

“Uhm, I just got here.”

He merely nodded his head. “Is your sister here?” Logan asked sarcastically and slid his hands in his pockets.

“My sister?” Sonya asked, confused.

She had forgotten about the whole ideal. “MJ.” Logan stated sternly, causing her to flinch.

“MJ?” She scratched the back of her head, causing her hair to be messy. “I thought she was at Jorge’s place.”

Logan felt something he never thought he would ever feel in his entire life. Hurt. He could not believe that Jorge played along and helped his sister lie to him. As if on cue, Jorge appeared from behind Logan.

Sonya tensed at his presence. The last time she saw him, things did not end so well. “Sonya?” Jorge spoke up, causing Logan to turn around.

“Jorge, what are you doing here?” Logan asked.

Jorge frowned at him and wondered the same thing about him. “I came to see May.” He said and turned to look at Sonya. “Where is she?” He asked her.

“What do you mean? I thought she was at your place!” Sonya said.

“What? What do you mean you thought she was at my place?” Jorge asked, clearly confused.

“I-why don’t you guys come in?” She opened the door widely and stepped aside so that they could enter. They both stepped inside, and before she could close the door, she spotted an old man passing by. “Mr Brown!” She called him.

Jorge and Logan looked at each other and back at Sonya. “Sonja! I didn’t know you were back. Hoe gaan dit?” He asked, as he stood in front of her open door, aware of the two superpowers in the house.

“I’m great thanks, would you mind stepping in for a minute?” Sonya asked, cautiously. The man stepped in without further ado. Sonya closed the door and stood next to the two men. “Guys, this is Mr Brown, he is our caretaker. Mr Brown, these are Mr Parker and Mr Billings.” She introduced them.

Jorge stepped forward and shook the man's hand, while Logan just gave a slight nod. “Mnr Brown, het jy deur ‘n kans sien die ander Ms Smith?” Logan asked and Sonya looked at him wide eyed; she still could not get used to the fact that he spoke Afrikaans because he was neither white nor coloured or Indian.

“Oh! Daai meisie? Beautiful with bad attitude? Of die ander een, jonk and wild?” Mr Brown asked, and Logan gave him a stern ‘yes.’ “The young one left last weekend and the scary one left on Thursday evening. I saw her leaving with her bags, and she left your key with me, Sonja.” He explained. Logan felt as if the air had been knocked out of him.

Sonya wanted to ask whom he was talking about because she thought MJ stayed alone, but she noticed the tension and excused Mr Brown. “She left on the night of our date?” Logan asked, his face pale and Jorge tensed. He did not know that MJ and Logan went on a date, and from the look on Logan’s face; something bad had happened.

Jorge feared the worst; he wondered what could have gone wrong. He barged into her bedroom and opened the closet, but it was empty. He walked back into the sitting room and gave Logan the look that confirmed his suspicions- she was really gone. He knew this day would come, that someday his sister would have to come back to work, and she would have to leave, but he never thought it could all end like this. “Excuse me.” Logan said in a hoarse voice and walked out of the room, and Jorge ran after him before Sonya could stop him.
