Arthur didn't look at her, he couldn't look at her. Her eyes began to swell with tears.
He shook his head.
She burst into tears, covering her mouth with the palm of her hand to disguise them from other members of camp, two streams of tears falling onto her cheeks.
"Hey now, c'mon." Arthur whispered, reaching out to her and placing his hand on her thigh comfortingly. "Don't cry over someone like me."
She sniffled, wiping her nose with the back of her hand, her heart shattering into two separate halves. "Y-you can't die."
Arthur smiled sadly and nodded his head. "Turns out that getting gunned down by the law and everyone else wasn't going to kill me. Beating a sick man to death was going to kill me."
Natasha looked down at her feet, both hands flying up to cover her eyes as she processed the news over and over.
"I-I don't want you to go."
Arthur sighed and moved up, throwing his arm over her shoulder and gently placed a kiss on the side of her hat, avoiding her skin. "You need to get out of here. Run away and don't look back. Go, go with Micah."
She shook her head, removing her hands and turning to face him, his beautiful blue eyes which were once laced with mischief and wonder, now sunken in, tired and lifeless. "I need to make sure you're alright. I can't go now. W-what about loyalty? Dutch hates Micah enough as it is, he could kill us the way he's been acting."
"Loyalty apparently don't mean nothing no more... he would've let John hang. He lied to Micah about you... he's a loose cannon at the minute." Arthur said.
"W-we just need money." She responded, in a hopeless manner.
"You're starting to sound like Micah." Arthur rolled his eyes, using his thumb to wipe away a tear from his eyes.
She softly chuckled sniffling in the process before looking up at him. "How long do you have?"
Arthur glanced away and over towards the setting sun, Natasha doing too as they both bonded over one thing over the last two and half years, their love for nature.
"Only a few days, I reckon."
She could've collapsed, she could have wailed at the news as her hand flew to her mouth once again, shaking her head in disbelief. "Fucking hell."
Arthur sucked in his cheeks, Natasha noticing the slight tremble of his lips. He was afraid. He wanted to die in a small cottage somewhere, the love of his life by his bedside as he slowly drifted away. His peaceful death won't be as he envisioned.
"If you don't leave now, we have one last train. As much as I hate to say it, but that is your ticket out of here. Along with everyone else's. We ain't going to stick together. I say we split the money up and do our own thing, well, do your own thing."
"Don't say stuff like that Arthur." She sighed, not like his false sense of hope when in reality, he did have a few more days.
"I've done my bit. I helped the Indians, I helped the gang, I helped people who Strauss was slowly and surely killing... Karma has reached me and I've done all I can do. If I can make sure that you live a happy life, then I'll die a happy man."
Natasha wiped away the last remainder of her tears and slowly nodded. "You're one of the best men I know."
Arthur inhaled sharply, smiling. "Funny... Sadie said the same thing."
-----------
Natasha rode to Emerald Ranch, she would've gone to Van Horn but if the fellas are shooting up half of the town, the fence over that way was probably not the best place to go.
