Fourteen: Eavesdrop

Start from the beginning

I flipped through a couple pages of the small white notebook.

'i was supposed to go with my aunt Cynthia, but my mom said that she was afraid of how i would turn out. Aunt Cynthia visits sometimes, she doesn't know about the things that happen.'

"Can we get into contact with her?" Adam said, writing something down.

"I'll need to talk to Sierra first. I don't know if that's who she wants to be with-"

"Farrah our options are limited. Talk to Sierra, once she gives you the green light, I'm contacting that woman."

"Farrah our options are limited. Talk to Sierra, once she gives you the green light, I'm contacting that woman." We heard Adam say.

While our plan was to spy, I didn't expect to hear all of this.

I tried to go back upstairs once I realized the subject matter, however it was too late. Sierra was invested and insisted we continue eavesdropping.

Once the conversation was over, it was easy to assume that we'd heard more than what we are comfortable with.

"Woah...Aunt Cynthia.." she said quietly.

"How is she? Do you think you could live with her?"

"She's very...eccentric. I know it would be better than living with my grandparents though. Especially considering..they don't really want me."

It was devastating hearing my mom describe the way Sierra's grandparents spoke about her, but it gave me hope that everyone was putting their heads together to get her out of there.

"But do you think you'd be happy there?"

"I hope so. If not..then oh well. Only another year before we go to college."

"I don't like how quickly you write off your well-being Sierra. It's like it's not important to you."

"I'm just being realistic, Reese."

"And so am I. Look, I have all the confidence in the world you're gonna be happy with your aunt. And if you're not...you're welcome here anytime."

"I appreciate that." She said, resting her head on my shoulder.

Why does my stomach feel weird?

"We should uh..get back upstairs. I need to check on the boys."

We stood up, quietly making our way back up the steps.

She followed behind me as I went down the hall, into my room.

"What are you two doing?" I asked Lou and Grayson, who were giggling at the computer.

"We're on YouTube." Lou shrugged.

Sierra«

Some hours passed, Adam and his family had gone home some time ago..and it was now growing dark.

After making the awkward trip to shower in Reese's bathroom, I was getting ready for bed.

As I was laying out my clothes for school in the morning, there was a soft knock on my door.

"Yes?"

I already know what this is about.

Mrs. Adler opened the door slowly. The notebook we wrote in was in her hand, so it was easy to guess what the discussion would be about.

"Sierra I'm sorry to keep bothering you with this. I know you're gonna be here for an entire week, so I'm gonna give you some days to breathe between these conversations. But we made important progress today and I'd like to talk about it."

"Not a problem." I said, sitting on the bed.

"So..I talked to Adam. I know you wrote about your aunt...Cynthia. He wants to get into contact with her. What do you think about that?"

"That doesn't sound so bad.."

"You can be totally honest with me. We need you in the best situation you can possibly be in."

"No really. I love my aunt Cynthia. She's just a little...out there."

"Tell me a bit about her. Adam said we need background information...like..where does she work?"

"She's a Uh..."

"Do you know?"

"Yes..it's just that I'm not sure how to describe it. My grandmother calls her a prostitute, but that's not it. She's a dancer..."

"Oh." Mrs. Adler said, a bit taken aback. "Not a problem."
