Chapter 10 - First Ascent: Part 1

Start from the beginning

As we all go for the newly opened door, Tamos bends down and goes through his bag. "One moment, please. I would like to use my new skill 'Monster Harvest'." Without waiting for a response, he begins scooping specific sections of the gel bodies into small vials.

Every time he finishes and stoppers a bottle, the body vanishes, and a small blue blob is left behind. He tosses the blue blobs into a pile. When all is said and done, he has around twenty blue blobs stacked together and over thirty vials of blue goo. He makes five even piles of each, stuffing the fifth into his bag.

"Blue Gel and Blue Goo. I am unsure what they do, but I know one of the vendors sells this stuff. It might come in useful." Tamos motions for all of us to take one of the piles. I take mine, shoving the Blue Gel and Blue Goo into my bag. Checking, I am glad to see they stack in only one square each on my inventory grid.

Tamos has a sly smile on his face as he turns to Brick. "Now you can say you got blue balls from a guy, Almight."

Everyone but Tella laughs. Brick, wiping tears from his eyes, pushes past Tamos to the door. "Who's to say I haven't before?" He makes his eyebrows wiggle suggestively at Tamos and we all laugh again. Tamos wears a grossed-out expression, but only for a moment. Soon, he is laughing along. I think I am beginning to enjoy myself.

I can feel myself slipping into that comfortable place my emotions go when I'm having fun with friends. Laughing and joking always makes the stresses of life fade away. The feeling is one that always made the real world more bearable. I feel a gentle curve to my lips that hasn't been common lately. I was unconsciously smiling and it feels great.

We reach the unlocked door. Rina pulls it open and beckons for Brick to lead the way again. The room we enter is long, well over a hundred feet. Maybe two. There are thin horizontal openings alternating in the floor and ceiling every ten feet or so. Between every opening in the ceiling is an orb of light.

As Brick's foot crosses the door frame, spears shoot out of the openings in a blur. The spears that shot up from the ground stop right before the orbs. The ones that shoot down almost hit the floor. The spears then begin to retract at about half the speed. A few seconds pass and they erupt again. Each row has different timing.

About two-thirds of the way down the hall, there is a lever with a wooden handle. Past that, on the far wall is another wooden door with bars.

"Oh damn. This looks like it's going to suck." Rina said.

Brick places a hand on her shoulder and says "Don't worry healer lady, I got this." He winks at her and turns back to the hall.

He calmly walks up to the first row of spears, waits for them to retract, and jumps over them when they are still a few inches out. After he lands, he, just as calmly, goes to the next row and ducks underneath the retracting spears. He does this repeatedly until he gets to the lever. Pulling it, all the spears in the hallway retract. The bars on the far door also retract.

"Um, guys. This is ticking. I think you should run." He yells.

We don't dawdle. Everyone runs. Sure enough, just as the last person crosses an opening, the spears shoot out again. We are almost to the door when Tamos trips on the last horizontal opening. He lands on the ground just under the very last opening in the ceiling. I bend and yank him by his hood. We both scramble up and out the door that Brick is holding open. We don't stop running until we almost bowl the girls over. Both of us are laughing at out near miss. When we notice the girls staring out to the middle of the room. We look up to see what has their attention and our laughter dies instantly.

This room is identical to the first, that is, except for the door on the other side. It is similar to the one I opened with the First Floor - Tower Key. Oh, and we aren't alone this time either.

A mob of fifteen Goblins and just as many rats, the size of dogs, are huddled up in the center of the room. This group is identical to the party we saw at George and Betty's farm only there are more than before and they are a bit bigger. I feel if I look hard enough, I could probably make out a Grimply mixed in there somewhere. Is that because all goblins look alike to me, being human, or is it because I feel bad about killing the little goblin? The tallest Goblin is a lighter shade of grey than the rest. He is wearing a loin cloth and carries a round shield with a one-handed axe.

Tower Goblin Clan Leader

Another Goblin, who is also different from the rest, is right next to the leader. It is wearing a long black robe. The hood is so deep, I can't see the creature's face. Its hands glow like Tamos' were while he was casting a spell. Great, they have a caster:

Tower Goblin Shaman
Level 5

The rest of the cronies have a mixture of swords and clubs.

When Brick makes it to the group a second later, I can hear the door slam and lock behind us. As soon as it does, both sides draw their weapons. The Goblin Leader takes one step forward, points unerringly at me, and bellows "Charge!" They all run in different directions, no doubt trying to flank us.

Brick steps forward and calls out. "Circle up." We fall into a back to back circle formation. I step up on Brick's left with my long dagger and Tella steps up on his right with her daggers. Rina stands next me and with two round blades called chakram crossed in front of her. Tamos' hands light up as he steps next to Rina, his mouth moving silently.

When the horde meets our little group, a goblin with a club swings for my head. I dodge the blow and step forward, stabbing the Goblin in the chest, the extra damage from Magical Strike causing a large chunk of the goblins HP to disappear. He staggers back. Before I can follow up with another thrust, a rat jumps at my legs. One swift kick sends it flying away.

Before I can get back into position, my senses tingle. There is someone staring at me from the right. I can feel their eyes boreing into me. So, I drop to the ground just in time to dodge a bolt of mana. The caster Goblin had tried to blast me. The rest of the party must have noticed the incoming bolt too because they disperse then regroup, narrowly avoiding the blast.

When I stand and look at the Caster. His face is now visible as his hood has fallen back. He's sporting a grin and is casting another spell, the magic building in his hands. A rage begins to build in me. Heat grows in my stomach and after a few moments, I start walking towards the caster. He had moved away from his leader to aim his first shot at me.

Two smaller Goblins make to stand between me and my query. When I reach them, two swift lunges and kicks gets them out of my way. I didn't check to see if they are down or not. I can feel small pricks up and down my legs but no pain. I just keep marching towards the caster. Nothing will stop me. With every step I take, the caster takes a step back.

When his back hits the wall, he throws his magic at me. Sheathing my dagger, I side step his attack easily and lunge at him, my right hand gripping his throat. He attempts to draw his staff, but I take it from him and throw it away. With the rage I feel, I am able to lift the Goblin off his feet. He starts to splutter and choke as I cut off his air supply. The red haze in my vision thickens.

Before I can crush the life out of my prey, I feel a sharp blow to the back of my head. The hit stuns me and the caster is able to squirm out of my loosened grip. There is a stick figure in my lower HUD and it's the only thing I can focus on. It has stars above its head. A small two counts down to zero before I can see straight again.
